Hawaii is the #1 consumer of Spam and it was introduced to us also during the war time from the american soldiers. We dont eat it on holidays, we eat it almost everyday! And we came up with this great idea wrapping spam with seeweed and rice called Spam Musubi, so delicious!
No one would ever admit this story to me while I lived in Korea. But knowing the history and also my own country's use of Spam during the Great Depression (1930s) I made the connection. It's an interesting cultural difference. In my family we only ate Spam when my dad wasn't earning that much money for meat. My mom & dad both grew up during the depression, so Spam reminded them of hard times, they did not like to remember it. Yet the Koreans seem to like looking back on having survived those times. For older Koreans, maybe it reminds them how important it was to be close to family and help each other. It's really similar to the reason kimchi is always served at meals. Older Koreans have told me that before the war, kimchi was just another side dish; but during and after the war, kimchi was sometimes the only food they had. The kimchi pots were buried in the ground to age and to preserve for hard times. So, when they had nothing, they could dig up the kimchi pots and eat that.
You are adorable! How your friends reacted to your question was hilarious. Thank you for uploading these kind of videos to teach us more about Korean culture
I finally understand why the Korean lady and her group of friends were freaking out over seeing spam in the grocery store lol 😂 I remember seeing that and was like "What...? I've never seen Filipinos, let alone foreigners, so excited about spam before"
@@swapnil1590 It tastes like pork, its sweet, a little savory and a bit on the salty side. If its cooked right itll be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I think its delicious, absolutely nothing rotten about it. Just slice it thin, fry it in a skillet with some butter until it's cooked to your taste, then put it on a sandwich and bam, that's luch
Hi ! I'm a new subscriber. The Seungri issue led me here and I enjoyed your videos especially when you talked about the military during the videos. Can you do a video why the Korean people always do the "peace sign" .
We were stationed in Hawaii from 1998-2001 and spam is actually on the menu in a lot of restaurants. We jokingly call it the “mystery meat” or S-salty P-processed A-artificial M-meat 😂 but my guys love it! You can buy it in the states prepackaged individual slices. It’s awesome! I don’t have to get the gelatinous goo all over my hands 😳 and none of it goes to waste 👍
We have span once a month as spam sandwiches about 2.50 a can now a cheaper can meat out there called treet even worst. But always keep a couple cans around, can make it a thousand ways fast.
In the USA, there are parts of the US that still love SPAM. We eat “Crappy” meat too, in certain parts of the USA, and it isn’t anything to be ashamed of. It’s a “Sometimes food” in my family; we try to stay healthy and lean; I’m very lean myself. But even I will eat SPAM sometimes just for a pleasurable meal; in the South SPAM is loved when it’s fried up, kind of like bacon. Don’t ever be ashamed of eating what you like to eat. No one’s better than you for eating a certain kind of food.
SPAM was an American military invention in food and a necessity during the Korean War. My uncle who was a fighter pilot in the Korean War, used to have a tin out at Christmas time as well. He didn't want any of us to forget how terrible a time that was and that he and my father had put in their time fighting in two overseas major wars. Perhaps, that is the Koreans way of keeping the younger generation remembering how and why they are where they are today. And not looking like the mess that is to your North. The tyrant who holds his kingdom back into the by gone days of the "cold wars". (And yes, SPAM is still sold here in the US too.)
Americans shouldn’t look down on other countries for loving spam. Americans eat McDonald’s and other fast food brands and those are way worse than spam
I’m from Laos and I visited my nephew and his wife who is Korean for the first time and I had SPAM. Her parents can’t believe that I never had Spam before. The taste is not what I expected, gonna do some more research and use it in Lao cooking muhhhhahaha.
I thought Spam only referred to unwanted email messages, so I was so confused at the beginning of the video, hahaha. Great video, though. Like always. I love world history.
What's funny is at my school/학원 we get these giant spam and tuna gift set packages every Chuseok and Lunar New Year and I never know what to do with them. I mean, come on, this has got to be one of the weirdest gifts to give to English/Foreign Teachers. It's not like the majority of us live here with our family or know how to cook Korean food. We also get our own apartments so we have no one to share it with. Plus, most foreigners don't tend to eat Spam, yet alone 8 cans of it. ㅋㅋ. I literally have 3 giant gift boxes and at this point from the last year and a half, and have decided to give one to the next aujussi or aujumma I see that comes around collecting recyclables at my apartment complex. LMAO it is ridiculous!
We enjoy fried strips of spam on corn tortillas cooked on the flame. Add salsa and maybe a little refried beans to that and you’ve got a meal on a budget! LOL!!
Spam is awesome in Puerto Rico we eat for breakfast fried spam & eggs yum. White rice with fried spam & ketchup yasss. We make a spred for party sandwiches and a great chesse ball with Spam...and when I got station in Hawaii it was Heaven another Island that loves Spam as much as we Puertoricans. Great to know Koreans loves it too. I would love the Spam gift box 🥰🥰🥰🥰 it mighty not be healthy but is sooooooo delicious 😘
I like making spam fried rice. It's really good. I love your friend's reaction. Yea, it's bad but it tastes good so why not eat it? lol I'd like a spam gift set. Why don't we have them in USA? :(
My family is from Hawaii, which is like the capital of SPAM. We eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner and *DESSERT* - yes, the greatest delicacy in Hawaii is the *pineapple upside-down SPAM cake* !!! (^_^) Why do Hawaiians love SPAM? Because during WW2, Korea, and Vietnam wars SPAM was the only meat that the US military could feed their soldiers indefinitely, as it never expired, and all of that SPAM had to be shipped through Hawaii before moving on to the bases in Asia.
Whenever, you're in the USA, check out the different flavor varieties of Spam. Classic, Lite, Turkey, Jalapeno, Bacon, Teriyaki, Low-Sodium and the list goes on -- just to name a few.
Not only spam is bad for you but also canola oil as well. Pls don’t eat vegetables oil anymore. It’s packed with omega 6 and off balance the ratio of omega 3: omega 6, causing inflammation inside your body. Sugar is lethal as well. South Koreans have worked so hard to get where they are now, pls get healthier and stay strong.
Spam might not be good for you but you can feed a family of 6 easily, use to be inexpensive but it's now going for nearly $3.00 a can in America, no gift sets yet but have seen the different flavors spam comes in, homes, prefer the original or less salt. I am from Hawaii and it's a staple especially since WWII & Pearl Harbor. It's Spam for Breakfast lunch and Dinner and Spam Musubi for Snack. We even have spam in our Bento boxes, called Surf Paks, easy to figure that out. McDOnald's serves it as one of their breakfast meats, any breakfast serving restaurant will offer Spam! You don't put your nose up thiso Spam if offered, disrespectful, Tutu (amoni/grandma) will give you a quick kick under the table! Living in Tennessee now, older Generation love it, but younger generation aren't appreciative to have food on their plate, they are rude saying its all they ever ate when young. I did too, but I love it! We like adding it to our Saimin (rahyeon/ramen noodles)
Honestly...during xmas time my family really enjoys hickory farms summer sausage and turkey suasage... never had spam myself...but proabably similar since they are all processed meats and not 'great' for you 😅😅
This video cracked me up and explained a lot!!! Firstly as a child in the 70's in the US I loved spam but r really never see it anymore in the market. I was recently in a a Korea grocery store in Cambridge Ma H-Mart and there where like 20 varieties of Spam I had never seen anything like it lol!! I stood there for a few minutes totally confused . Now I'm not thank you Scouter!!
As an American, trust, we get it, we're the reigning champs in eating cheap, fattening food that's terrible for us(I think only Britain competes with us in being fat, fatnesses), and even the ad thing sounds crazy until you realize we have whole holidays out here that are just ads to sell more fat. Valentine's day anyone, and the red and white Santa and idea of Christmas is literally from a Coca-Cola ad. If Spam is your country's guilty pleasure, we're the last ones to judge lol.
Spam is expensive here in Indonesia, common people cant really buy this just for daily meal because buying fresh meats are much cheaper 😭 is it count as expensive too at korea?
I like the Spam from Korea just the right taste, not too porky. Crazy expensive tho. Can you like investigate why Tom’s Honey Butter Almonds’ so good? Haha
So it’s kinda like how some people in the West Indies eat things like cow tongue and oxtail, thinking it a delicacy. Those were the leftovers of the slave owners and white people, and after a while, there was a way to make it all delicious, and it became an integral meal in their society.
Sorry for the boring reaction.
LMAOOO
🤣🤣🤣
Swap your spam for corned beef..lol
Thats what I think is the equivalent to..but I think yours is pork..idk..I've never tried spam
Found you from the Seungri videos, and now I'm here. Wow this is really refreshing tbh watching you talk about spam now
Rikunas same here 😂😂
SAME 😂

this was really interesting. i didn't think i'd get a history lesson like this. i subscribed.
“Spam is goddamn delicious” had me laughing
She knows what’s up
I'm glad I found you so I can keep up with latest news👍💙

Can you do a video on why Koreans love ramen so much?
Thanks for the idea! Will do!
i wanna know that one as well
i hope once all this political stuff and scandals blows over we can return to more topics like this one LOL
Oh man this comment aged terribly
I love SPAM, i’m learning Korean history here, thank you for the entertainment news as well.
I like that u give some history and background about the topic
“During the holidays we just wanna eat shitty meat” so funny I’m from England and love a spam fritter (battered sliced spam) every now and then 😂
You are adorable! How your friends reacted to your question was hilarious. Thank you for uploading these kind of videos to teach us more about Korean culture
My mom is a chef and a history teacher so I've heard this story before, but your storytelling is great!
I finally understand why the Korean lady and her group of friends were freaking out over seeing spam in the grocery store lol 😂
I remember seeing that and was like "What...? I've never seen Filipinos, let alone foreigners, so excited about spam before"
Very interesting story about spam. Short and clear, thanks
guilty pleasure.. haha i feel u.. you are so good at explaining things..envy you..
Isnt SPAM basically the same thing as Ma Ling? (canned pork meat, i think from china but really popular here in Indonesia for pork-eater)
Sort of, yeah. It's popular here in the Philippines as well. Mostly because it's easily prepared and takes less time to cook.
Maling is more cheaper than spam... maling is more known here in Philippines. More on in not so wealthy family..
Spam may not be healthy but damn that shii good tho 😂 It’s all I eat when I don’t have much to eat at home 🤷♀️
How does it taste?
Like does it have meaty or a little bit rotten sort of taste?
SK if you fry it , it taste good , I can’t really explain the taste cause I haven’t eaten it in a while but it just depends on how you make it

They sold a lifestyle, that togetherness with your family is really important
SPAM is great. Perfect topping for ramen.
I grew up on spam and I turned out fine.

Spam is a good cultural artifact for those who are interested in the wars USA was involved in.

Hi! Im just curious about the actual taste of this korean spam. Because i want to buy it here in our country.
You kind of missed the opportunity to speak about 부대찌개 and the Korean War. There are restaurants and even chains dedicated to it.
Lol'd so hard at "we just want to eat shi**y meat" 😂
It is not so weird, there are foods you only see around certain holidays in the US that aren't good for you.
SPAM UP!!! FOR THE TASTE OF IT!!!

I didn't know that "spam" was something to eat. I thought you want to talk about korean who are obsessed with receiving "spam mail"
😅
I believe that's probably where they got the word "spam" for junk mail. Spam is considered junk meat! But TBH ,its sooooo delicious.
Same😂

@@florencinemarearai-nash Germany, why?😅😂
