For me, what I love so much about this new song is the return to the old Bon Iver I fell in love with many years ago. His music has almost gone full circle from the 22 album (which I also loved). It almost feels perfectly timed as I feel like I have been through a journey and as I start to come back to myself and fall in love with the simple things in life, Justin releases a song that is also simple. That is what really struck me and I aint ashamed to admit brings a little tear to my eye.
I'd really love to see his reaction to Bon Ivers album "Bon Iver". It's my favourite album of his and I think it serves as the best crossroads from his earlier stuff to his more experimental stuff. Also, I think knowing Bon Ivers previous work and then listening to this new release makes this new release alot more special, because you can hear him completely cutting back into his raw essence. Big fan haha.
Justin Vernon is so influential, diverse, and, frankly, genius that it’s absolutely worth going through the whole Bon Iver discography from start to finish. Either selecting standout tracks (hard to do imo) or listening to complete albums.
@@armankundu7007 I’ll recommend two from each project, but it’s hard to do haha. For Emma, Forever Ago: Skinny Love & Re: Stacks Blood Bank EP: Blood Bank & Beach Baby Bon Iver, Bon Iver (my personal favorite project): Minnesota, WI & Holocene 22, A Million: 29 #Strafford APTS & 666 i,i: Hey, Ma & Marion Highly, highly recommend listening to the projects all the way through, but I feel like those are good places to start.
@@samoak8346 thanks bro. One more question, through what device do you listen to music, like headphones, wireless ear buds or IEMs ? Personally I am thinking to buy IEMs , if you are using them, do they really sound way better than other devices?
First interaction with this channel and very pleasantly surprised how much the younger guy genuinely understands and "gets" bon Iver, wasn't expecting that. Thank you, loved the video.
I mean, the comparison was of his voice, so like, not really a comparison of music quality or whatever. Not really sure why you’re so pressed about it.
You cant imagine what I would give to listen to Bon Iver again for the first time. Hes a 1 of 1.. For Emma Forever Ago is aboslutely the greatest album ever.
I live in Justin's hometown and ran into him once at the Local Store. Really neat guy. He's so authentic and relatable, but he's just got this incredible talent you never would've expected from looking at him. You should really check out, like, all of Bon Iver's music, from front to back. I recommend that order because you can really hear the artistic development.
if you listen closely, you can tell that two acoustic guitars are playing at the same time, panned left and right whith slightly altered takes. So it is not one singular acoustic guitar but actually two that are layered. really love this song.
i acutally think its one guitar that has a special pickup that splits the strings into different speaker channels, he talks about it in the press release for the song
@@jonahthecitizen Ah I was wondering how he managed that! Thanks for sharing, sounds so good. Really makes the mix sound so immersive. Do you have a source for the interview?
Hey man it’s been rlly great watching these and how amazing ur relationship with ur dad is. It’s great to see dads that acually care and love for their kids. I can tell he raised u right just by ur relationship with him. Keep it up :))
This is reminicsent of Justins early music, from Mount Vernon to Deyarmond Edison. If people haven't listened to those...you should check them out! I'm from Eau Claire and am the same age as Justin...so got to see him in the Battle of the Bands and at his college back in the day. So good.
I just had to comment when I saw Bon Ive on your channel. Im so happy you've introduced your dad to Bon Iver. There are just too many great tracks to check out but if I could suggest the next one then I'd say do Holocene. That track is just one ethereal beauty. A full album reaction would also be amazing!
For context, I'm 57. My formative music years started with 80's R&B then morphed into mid to late 80's alternative. (The Smiths were/are huge to me). Having said that, I totally endorse your Holocene suggestion. One of the best songs of my recollection.
Just found your channel and love the thoughtful critique. You both really think before sharing your reaction and it such a nice vibe. Thanks for making your videos
This song give me so many vibes. seeing this video makes me feel like the lyrics could be a father son, or an obvious a past relation ship but i feel it fits a lot of people in our lives. i love boniver . have for years
Bon Iver is one of my favorite artists of all time. Justin Vernon is a genius. Please give a listen to all of his music. They're all such incredibly unique bodies of work, many people will probably love one more than another.
I'm sure we can't possible agree on the first Bon Iver song that hooked us but I think mine is For Emma. Holocene is incredible but Emma is just about the perfect song IMHO. I feel you!
@@charlestwigg1272 first song that hooked me was probably FE. This track is going right back to his original style as in For Emma forever ago.. I love Bon Iver, but I also love his band with Aaron Dessner ..Big Red Machine.. their second album is one of my favourites... Justin wrote Speyside as an apology to two people who he loved and hurt. Enjoyed your video.
First time here! I know nothing about your channel, but I love that father and son are sitting enjoying listening to music together 🥹🙏🏻❤️ I think Justin sounds similar to Hazlett! Or vice versa. Curious to see your other videos… I liked this one a lot. Glad I stumbled upon your channel ☺️
Yall REALLY should listen to Bon Iver’s discography (: Mahbe start with For Emma, Forever Ago and go onward. Vernon is so influential and makes fantastic music
Have been a longtime fan, ever since I first heard flume. And the more I listen the deeper my appreciation gets; the poetry, music, voice, the visual presentation, the myth. Recently purchased the two books of piano arrangements for the eponymous and 22 A million and playing through them and seeing them laid out like that is very cool. They are also very faithful yet playable arrangements. For Any musician/fans very worthwhile.
If you listen to For Emma, Forever Ago I suggest you give the album a full play through. The transitions between songs lend to the feeling of isolation Justin Vernon was experiencing while making the album. Truth be told, I’ve never heard a Bon Iver project that isn’t just absolutely incredible but if you’re starting somewhere, FE,FA is his magnum opus.
His music is so wonderful. Love the new song. When I heard 22 a million, I disliked it at first listen, but it grew on me over time and is my favorite. Wonderful live too.
You guys should definitely listen to his albums now. There's no better time to get into an artist than when they're releasing new music (especially if they release it every 5 years!)
Wow. I just stumbled upon your channel and I absolutely love your reactions and discussions. I saw your coverage of 2Pacs stuff but never would have expected you to listen to Bon Iver. I listened a lot to Bon Iver in 2015/16. Awesome to hear something new from them, so thank you for that. 😃🙏🏼 I have a recommendation, though: could you please react to Run The Jewels "walking in the smow". Much love and keep up the amazing content, guys. ❤
Would love to see your reactions to 22 a million - The juxtaposition between these two pieces of work would be really interesting to see your reactions!
The timing of the this song is really cool, it feels like it changes from 4 to 6, or maybe just extra bars of 2 in different spots.. I dont know, but it sounds great.
Definitely would like to see a For Emma listen. Also, would be really interesting to listen to Bon Iver's Woods from Blood Bank EP followed by Kanye's Lost in the World to see how it was incorporated
Justin Vernon's music is so full of Catholic guilt (even if he's not personally religious) that it seeps straight into his music. "It serves to suffer / make a hole in my foot / and i hope you look / as i fill my book / what a waste of wood" He's conjuring imagery of crucifying himself for his mistakes while expanding his own personal lore and art. But it seems now that he actually regrets doing this to some degree as it personally cost him relationships with other people that are more meaningful than the success of his band. He's a fascinating writer. If you guys don't have time to do all of For Emma, I would suggest the live performance of Blood Bank from Ericcson Globe in Stockholm. It will give you both a greater sense of the fullness of a concert. I know pops said he worries about bands who can't physically do everything that's on an album because they can only play one instrument at a time. The genius of a Bon Iver concert is they invert that. They build on top so some of their more stripped down and deeply personal songs actually get MORE EXPRESSIVE as they gain layers in vocals, drums, bass, and guitar.
also, a full bon iver album reaction would be amazing
I’d love to hear their thoughts on all his work
