I‘ve listened to the 2015 live version of 89 so many times that if it ever comes out officially I’m gonna miss the guy going WOOOO as the final chorus kicks in
So glad this was recommended in my feed. Not only a masterful deep dive into the works Bon Iver, but a true ode and love letter to all things Bon Iver. Amazing narration and well-produced. I am grateful and wishful for this video to reach far into the community. Thank you for making this.
You can’t imagine the impact these kind words have on me. Thank you thank you thank you 🙏 that’s exactly what I was going for and I’m glad it resonates within community! Keep it restaurant 🫶
@@alexs_headNo, thank you! It's hard to describe to others/my friends how meaningful Bon Iver is to me but I can find solace in knowing there are other Bon Iver stans amongst us.
The JV solo albums were briefly mentioned but you're definitely right - lots of people have commented that the other bands in the Bon Iverse should have had a little spotlight. I tried to focus only on Bon Iver, but Gayngs, DeYarmond Edison, Volcano Choir, Marijuana Deathsquads, etc. are all significant to the history as well. If I make a sequel they will be included :D
Well this document deserves much more views, thank you for this. Happy to agree that For Emma Take Away Show is one of the best live version of any music ever recorded.
didnt consider myself the biggest fan, but i recognised maybe 95% of the things here. guess i am Just a correction, on the end or Re:stacks, its not 50 seconds of silence, if you turn the volume up higher, you can hear Justin standing up and putting down his guitar and turning on a landline. I'm guessing its symbolic of him rejoining the world after the isolation that For Emma is based on. awesome vid btw, love to see more of this
I really like that thought - now I gotta listen to re: stacks again… You’re right though, I am wrong in saying it’s “complete” silence 🤫 everything has meaning in the Bon Iverse
Your comments on Re: Stacks were interesting to me because I've always thought of it as more of a reflective closure song. Sad or tragic feel like the wrong words to me, especially with the more hopeful ending. Its like a peaceful reflection and coming to terms then moving on which to me is why you can hear him put the guitar down and walk away.
Speyside creation date has been confirmed! Vernon wrote the three main songs of SABLE,-“Things Behind Things Behind Things,” “S P E Y S I D E,” and “Awards Season”-from 2020 to 2023, and he recorded them at his April Base studio in Wisconsin. Vernon produced the EP with Jim-E Stack. According to a press release, SABLE, is “named for near-blackness.”
Over soon is the entry point to 22, a million. The chaos and distortion are necessary components to appreciate the full effect of 33 God thru 666 The progression and arrangement of that album are masterful work.
You forget that silence at the end of stacks is him putting down his guitar, getting up, and plugging the phone back in. It’s a symbolic representation of ending self induced isolation. The end of a season
great video, however, please look up how to pronounce “bon hiver” in french. even the americanized version is way closer to the real way than however you said it
Yeah the stars aligned... I started working on this in December last year and spent 1-2 hours per week. Had no idea how convenient the timing is. Thinking of doing another video focused entirely on the new stuff
That was such a cool video!! I new a lot of those appart from Brackett (weirdly) and some of the unreleased songs at the end. Thank you! (also, i'm the 22nd like)
Justin Vernon will always be better than Taylor swift. Also, I get that bon iver is a band, but let’s be real, it’s just other people helping Justin Vernon with his creative visions.
Great video man. Can't help but feel that Emma Jensen, in light of her place in Bon Iver lore, deserves her own spot. You could've probably went with Volcano Choir, Sam and Phil Cook, Deyarmond Edison and even 'Lip Parade/Amateur Love' (Josh Scott/Aero Flynn) as separate entities.
Yeah I’ve gotten a ton of suggestions of topics I missed. This comment alone contains a whole video’s worth in the history of the band. I’m debating if I should make a sort of sequel that includes all these suggestions
Please do.. I know it must be exhausting to produce a high quality video, such as this one, but I'd love to continue my dive into the Bon Iver lore through your content. Either way, thank you for creating this masterpiece @@alexs_head
That webpage was at icommai.com but it seems like it’s gone now… That URL brings me to some weird casino website The boniver.org website was reworked a couple weeks ago before SABLE, was announced. I’m assuming they got rid of the icommai.com website around that time? :/
Amazing video. I’m straight off to those TikToks I never knew existed! 🤦🏼 Also - Norma Gene - the candle in the wind that was Marilyn Monroe… Peace! ✌🏼
I believe it. I have only done some cursory listening but I definitely want to do a deeper dive (especially on Collapse List - haven't even listened yet!)
Can't say Speyside is unreleased now! :)
i knew everything in this video and was sat for the entire thing. great job man.
Incredible video. A true masterclass in Bon Iver. I loved every second of it. Thank you, Alex's Head.
Fyi: The song "Roslyn" is actually spelt "rosyln". This fact would funnily fit very well in this video
My god. I never even noticed that. The fact that I went with Roslyn all throughout this video is gonna bug me 😑 TIL!
Awesome video!! Loved it. Haven, Mass is the only thing I was missing
That and no volcano choir mention but other than that, a masterful deep dive
I‘ve listened to the 2015 live version of 89 so many times that if it ever comes out officially I’m gonna miss the guy going WOOOO as the final chorus kicks in
No Volcano Choir so if you haven’t yet, check out the Repave album!!
Thanks for this comment. It's been years since I last listened to Volcano Choir. Had to leave the video for a while.

You are the real MVP 🙏
Great video, but no mention of Hazeltons, Self Record, Volcano Choir....Ticonderoga?....I think this needs a Pt. 2!

I grew up in Eau Claire with Justin. You forgot level 0, which is Mount Verson...Justin's high school band. 2 great albums.

The future is bright, and miserable at the same time. My intro was creeks
I'm jealous - I hope you get to (or have!) watch it live! Every Bon fan deserves a live show experience
i have learned so many things about bon iver. and i love the taylor swift cameo

Thank you! Glad you had a good time my friend 🫡
So to answer the question "at which song do you use the washroom?" You don't. You wet yourself and hope not to miss anything exciting.
This is really good. I've thought of myself as a pretty big Bon Iver fan since 2008, but I learnt a few things.

I discovered Bon Iver through him covering John Prine's Bruised Orange. A great talent from the last decade indeed

People Festival 18 performance of Heavenly Father is the one that I love

Truly an amazing video. Great to see content from someone who loves Bon Iver as much as I do!

Incredible video. So excited for SABLE this’ll be my first release as a fan 🙏

Just uploaded one earlier today! Given how little we know about SABLE, it’s mostly speculation 😛 but it was fun to make!
