The cemetery wasn't maintained, so the city basically built a park over it and started maintaining it? I can't be the only one who is having trouble with this logic.

    • @iwantthe80sback59

I think it’s because cemeteries are private property vs parks which are public properties.

So TRUE. No logic here they just got what they wanted, As cities can and do all the time while making the people feel they had some kind of input. SAD.

    • @DollyTheLlama
      @DollyTheLlama 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@iwantthe80sback59 I don't know. I guess it depends on local ordinances, regulations, and such. We've got a local cemetery where I live that's maintained by the city. It's on land that was donated years ago by the local industry for their employees and towns people. The city now owns and maintains it, for the most part. It's always visited, so relatives and local visitors do their part in keeping graves tidy too.

@@DollyTheLlama Where I live, if it’s a private cemetery they pay for upkeep but if it’s a municipal park the government (ie us cause it’s our taxes) pays for upkeep. I’m sure it varies from town to town.

So all of a sudden the graves which were like honestly probably 200 yrs plus but wth? Where the hell are the ppl They have carnivals there & it's just an empty hard dirt parking lot sometimes ppl will put a couple cars for sale!

Disrespect of cemeteries and old graves is nothing new. Sometimes bodies are buried on top of old graves. Original cemetery owners pass away or sell the property. Not always to people that have any respect for the deceased or their families.

I’m in shock this is so disrespectful to everyone who isBuried there who in Their right mind would allow someone to put a park over a cemetery it’s so disrespectful to their families how would they feel if they were in that situation and got a notice saying that someone was going to build a park over one of their loved ones you do such a good job at finding out so many interesting things shame they couldn’t do something about this what happened to all the headstones why didn’t they just clean it up instead of putting all that money into putting a park over them

This video reminds me of Roosevelt High School here in St. Louis, Missouri. It was built on a "moved" cemetery and the knowledge was kind of lost through history. Until a kid playing football in the field tripped over a femur. It was found out that they only moved the stones and left the bodies under the school. Also, because of this, we learned that a good portion of downtown St. Louis is built on graves left behind and lost to time. Every time there's new construction here, they kick up a body or two and we find a lost cemetery.

This is a more common occurrence than most are aware. In Ontario, Canada there are cemeteries so old, the records of 'whom is buried where' no longer exist. At the beginning of Scott's video he shows headstones/tombstones with grave or plot marker stones piled on top of them. In most municipalities (in this province anyway) once a cemetery becomes full, and then eventually left abandoned of care (generally a minimum of 40 years since the last burial). The locality assumes the maintenance of that cemetery property. There are 'Pioneer' cemeteries all over Ontario with memorial monuments created which include the original headstones deemed salvageable. I do not know of any cemeteries that were repurposed as parkland, residential or commercial space in Ontario. To pile headstones and grave markers behind a chain link fence, without any recognition of whom they belonged to is sacrilegious and disrespectful to say the least. Why did they call it "Founders Memorial Park"? No doubt there are real Pioneers of the American West buried there. I see this more as a reimagining of history and the deletion of true founding peoples' relevance in the 21st century. After all it is the communist state of California.

@@johnpatterson4272 Im well aware. But they still did it. It's happened to more than one family as well. They've gone in, given their family members name, date of birth, death and supposed plot number - because they've gone to where they were buried and its someone else, and MP says they're nowhere in the system. Death is a business, businesses don't always follow the rules.

Hey Scott, you were in my neck of the woods, as a Whittier resident and native, I've heard many stories of strange happenings at this park such as apparitions, voices and a strange mist, I have personally seen the mist, but I'm sure there is a logical reason for it. My grandfather would have to pass this cemetery on the way to and from high school and told me he would run like hell at any sound he would hear.

I would never knowingly or intentionally build or live on a Cemetery but basically the whole world is a Cemetery.
Bodies are everywhere from thousands of years ago, so eventually this kind of thing will happen everywhere.
In the South, mostly everywhere would be haunted from all the tragic events that happened down here.

I've retired from the death industry & remember Paradise Cemetery very well. They sold the cheapest cemetery plots during the 70's-80's to families preferring burials. Back then, they were offering multiple graves (5-6 bodies of people whom were not related in one grave) for under $200.00. I thought it was odd, but it was popular when the average single grave sold for approx. $1,000.

Remind anyone of the first Poltergeist movie of how they built the houses on the cemetery and just moved the headstones....I hope the school doesn't get eaten. But that park makes me sad. I think they should of moved the cemeteries; headstones AND people to a new location. California/Nevada has alot of land that's not ideal for farming or homes due to it being a hot desert climate. They should of moved it there. It feels so disrespectful and sad....but Happy Canadian Thanksgiving 💗🍗🍁🇨🇦

I have an ancestor buried in that park. A baby, but an ancestor. He died from bee stings. My great grandfather was a Whittier Founder. He worked engineering a way to bring water to Whittier from the mountains via wooden flumes. I had an apartment on Dorland Street, which is on the north side of the park. I have the deed for the plot, signed by Willet Dorland, director of cemeteries. It was changed into a park when I was a kid, but I remember seeing it as a tangled mess. The headstones were taken by some of the fine citizens of the hills, they use them as stairs on the hill sides. The rest of them were tossed at Pio Pico mansion, then moved to the Whittier museum. You should see the museum. It is sad but there is nothing else to do. I looked for my headstones but never found it. I still live in Whittier. Thanks for putting this on you tube

Hey Scott great video! I have some more info for Founders Memorial Park in Whittier. The concrete pathway in the park is the original pathway layout for the cemetery. Also the original home of the family that started the Whittier cemetery association is next door to park. It wasn’t originally built there but was moved to its present location and a family does live in it. Also some of the headstones I believe are on display and located at the Whittier museum. This sort of thing happened quite often. Some examples are Pioneer Park in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego some headstones are actually set up there but most were dumped and buried by the metro by Mount Hope cemetery. Also in Long Beach there was Palm Cemetery. Ranch workers from Rancho Los Cerritos and people who couldn’t afford a normal burial would be buried there by their families. That actual cemetery was covered up by another cemetery which is Forest Lawn Long Beach. It’s actually the court yard of the Sunnyside Mausoleum which I highly recommend to visit. Again great video Scott!

In 1915 it was built over and a highway cut through there. They moved some of the bodies to another cemetery but some bones were crushed up to make the roads. Not only is it a sports stadium now but live rock concerts are held there too. I saw Taylor Swift there a couple of years ago with ground/floor seating tickets lol.

The same Thing happens where I live. I live in Frankfurt/Germany and near by is Wiesbaden. There is a Park who once was a Cemetary. They removed just the Stones and left the Bodies. The most crazy Thing is that some Graves are still there with the Stones. So you can make Barbecue or your Kids can play on and right next to Graves. 🤷‍♀️

Sweet Video Scott!! I really enjoyed this one. Although extremely sad too. There's a huge parking lot near my house. With a few businesses stores ect. That I looked up and was or is a cemetery too. They only took 30% of the bodies to other locations. So in otherwords ALOT of people's loved one remain I also have a channel where I do ghost hunting and that happens to be one of the locations and surprisingly got a lot of voices in the parking lot in the middle of the night pretty creepy and very sad. 😢👻

Wow you did an amazing Job scott, as i said before, i love these kind of stories, hope you can do more of these, was nice seeing you on Live last night by the way, sorry i was nodding of, not because you was boaring lol, its because the UK time hours are late, hope you understand, im so surprised you know the words to old songs like "Ski-lo" i remember that song very well, when you sang it, i was impressed because you knew all the songs of my time, im in my 40s so im assuming you was in the same age group as me, long gone are the days of amazing classic hip hop tunes.

This is so sad and disrespectful to the souls there. So disgusting, and creepy. Thank u for sharing, and making people aware of this, i bet no one apart from the families are aware that there are people underground. The two people going at it in the first cemetary are a prime example of the lack of knowledge.

Love the video,. You should look at doing one in Kingston, On. Skeleton Park. It was a forgotten cemetery from colonial times. They tried to develop the land, but when they broke ground the smell of decomp was out of this world. Turns out the rate of decomposition was slowed down because of the boggy soil.

Actually back in the later 1800s, people went on picnics in cemeteries. They didn't seem to have public parks as much as we do now.
In some ways it does and doesn't make much sense to turn this cemetary into a park. Nobody took care of it, so they did the next best thing and the city took care of it. Shame that they didn't take the time to move the bodies.
