    Your series is, hands-down, the most comprehensive explanation of sonar out there right now! I have watched DOZENS of videos before finding yours and SO wish I had found them sooner. I'll be passing these on to friends and students for SURE!

    Best explanations I've come across so far. I went back and looked at my Lowrance Hook2 x4 manual and was shocked it didn't even provide a legend for the colors! And this one, #3 - totally explains why I rarely see arches. I'm in a canoe with a trolling motor! I'm going to watch all the vids in this series a few times and get my finder out and go back over the settings. I'm clearly not making the most out of what I have and should stop shopping for something 'better'. Cheers!

    3rd video in the row and each time I like more. BTW: my understanding of the arch: it is not because the ping moves up and down the bladder itself, but because the "relativ" distance to that bladder return spot starts to be far away (on the edge of the cone, lets calls it phase1 and is displayed as the starting/left lower end of the arch), then it gets closer to the transducer as you move with your boat over it (fish stays floating in the same depth, but the transducer gets a little bit closer to it as the fish gets closer to the center of your sonar cone), and it reaches minimum distance in the moment you have the fish not in front of your boat (regardless of left, right or center; that moment you are closet to the fish is phase2 and marks the highest spot on the arch); third phase when you passed the fish (again either left/right or even straight over it) and your boat overtakes it, that makes the relativ distance to the fish grow again, thus the sonar returns mark the dot on the screen as being a bit farer away (looks like deeper, though the fish is still at the same spot) so this forms the right/down arch of your signal, as the fish moves again to the back edge of the sonar cone; I think it helps most to imagine the location of the fish relativ to the transducer from the side. Hope that was understandable... ;)

    I'm looking forward to lesson 4..... 👍🏼
    This is a truly rookie question:
    Do the fish feel these "pings"? And if so, what effect does it have on them? (i.e.- does it startle them? or scatter them? or are they oblivious to the whole experience?)
    Thanks.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +One Punch Excellent Question!! Sometimes they can definitely be sensitive to it. I can't say that I have seen schools scatter or anything, but there are times I will see fish act more cautious. There are many times where I will pause the sonar when fish aren't biting or reacting strongly. I always shut sonar down when we anchor for cut bait fishing. Just in case. Thanks for the question.

    So if you were traveling at 5-10mph on the far left of the screen, that sharp up and down, what looked like a steep drop off, would look more like a gradual slope going up then down again. So based on your speed would determine how steep the terrain would look. Is there a speed you travel to get a general understanding of how the ground actually is below you? Peace, Mo

  • @tripped42
    @tripped42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, quick question. I am seeing fish at 10' and above when you were at slower speed. I would assume coming to almost a stop from 40mph any fish near the surface would have scattered or dove. So are those actually fish?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are indeed fish but you always have to keep in mind that fish closer to the transducer will look a lot bigger than they are. The machine will auto adjust the gain based on the depth so the deeper you are the bigger fish will look near the surface even if they are very small (they are absorbing much more energy than fish 40 feet away). And yes, in most cases the fish will react to the noise of the boat closest to the surface when dropping off plane.

    Awesome video! Thanks! I’m a new boat owner and this has helped a ton. I got a simrad go7 and I mostly fish for bottom fish in 70-300 ft of water... and I have no idea how to set that up. I want to know how to look for structure or rocky bottom and how I can tell if there’s fish. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spend a lot of time using down scan. It’s a great tool for telling structure from fish. Set your screen to full screen downscan and turn fish reveal on.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Randy Miller I feel your machine works great at those speeds. Your returns may be a bit longer than normal but keeping that in mind you should see great detail. 👍👍

  • @larrylarry5300
    @larrylarry5300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Please explan the difference in transducers. Can you alternate different scanning transducers on one fish finder?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. Every display is different, the lower end units can only do 1 transducer. Higher end units like the Simrad Evo3 can do up to 3. I carry more than normal because I’m testing, but I prefer a highCHIRP WIDE transducer and a Medium CHIRP but I don’t fish very deep. If you fish deeper than 600ft regularly you would want a Low CHIRP transducer.

    Man, I just came across your vids and I've watched all three. I learned more from this series than I have learned in the 10 years that I've owned my Furuno Sonar. Would you consider doing one on the proper setup of a sonar. I catch fish by looking at the structure in the bottom. Here in the Albemarle Sound, we fish for striper by trolling at about 3 kts. which is just under 4 MPH... I almost never see arches before I catch fish... I do however see other "things".... it must be that I am reading objects that are fish but don't look like arches because I am trolling relatively slow.... any of that make sense?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ed Sanford I have a video up on setting up my sonar. The link is in the description here. Do you ever see arches? If not you might want to consider a transducer upgrade. The new CHIRP transducers are amazing.

    In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens th-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

    Hey Mike. Hope you can help me out a bit. I'm comparing two units. A Lowrance Elite 12 Ti2, and the Simrad GO12 XSE. Both with the Active Image transducers. Is one of these geared for saltwater and one geared for Freshwater? Also I'm confused about the Maps included. The Elite has the US/Canada Nav +, and the Simrad has the C-Map Pro. Is one freshwater and one Saltwater?? For me I'd prefer to have Coastal maps instead of freshwater cause I"m a saltwater guy, but at the very least when I go to different inland Lakes I'd like to have an outline of the lake as a minimum. Hope that made sense. :)

    When you talk about what you are seeing on your sonar has already past , by how much. For example if I find a school of crappie on my screen and want to anchor how far behind me are they by the time they are on my screen. Obviously my speed is a factor so assuming I am just trolling along. Thx!

    • @RyanSchwietersOutdoors
      @RyanSchwietersOutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Often times, you can scroll back with your cursor and place it over the fish. Then add a waypoint to that school of fish and the unit goes back and marks the location the fish were at!

  • @geraldqualls1369
    @geraldqualls1369 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Got dummy ? If I am setting still or anchored and my screen is moving left to right and it shows fish are they coming by.are they coming from the same direction as the screen is moving or have they already came by? Also can you do one on how to read down imaging and mark fish? Tkx for all the info GQ

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gerald Qualls Fish on your history can literally be coming from any direction ANY direction. The A scope can really help with that. Fish in the A scope are at that depth RIGHT NOW. Once it’s on the history, it could be anywhere. The A scope is quite important in that respect.
