One thing I can tell you as a middle school teacher is that there is no comic series in the WORLD better for a middle school library. The tone is perfect, the pacing is perfect, the characters are perfect. They fly off the shelves

Good to know I also attended a middle school with a library that ALSO had this series, lol. Though it didn't have many of the books outside of the main series and I think Out of Boneville wasn't in circulation for awhile to my memory.

Well many factors come into play. U mean westernized child age ? I don’t know if the more mature in Asian countries on average. I don’t know how things are going in Europe, but I’m pretty sure those kids already have been exposed to darker stuff and war and religions and extremism.

I had never read Bone, but when my daughter was little, I bought the scholastic editions and read them to her. We both loved them. She loved them so much, she had me read them to her several more times! Luckily, it’s all so good, I was able to do that without going crazy. Quality writing and art, with genuinely funny humor. Great comics. I really want to get the B/W complete version, so I can enjoy the art the way it was originally presented, too, but the coloring is great

I started reading Bone around the great cow race and loved it! I have been a fan ever since.
Last year I supported Jeff Smith's Thorn on Kickstarter and I enjoyed that as well.
Thanks Allan for reviewing one of my favorite stories in comics. I gave my brother the complete omnibus to read to his kids around 8 or 9 and they both are fans now too

Boy, this video brought back so many good memories! I was obsessed with Bone back in middle school and read all of the volumes from my school library. I was captivated by the story and characters with how it mixes comedy with the LOTR-esque fantasy adventure. Bone was my gateway to comics and without it, I wouldn't be the comic fan I am today.
I hope someday Bone would actually get a film or animated adaptation (you wouldn't believe how mad I was when Netflix cancelled the project).
Thank you for making this video! Watching this makes me want to pick up the books and experience it all over again!

I do remember Bone being impressive for how totally complete it was from Issue #1. It was obviously drawn by a working animator because his art was always flawless and consistent. He had practiced, obviously, but also it seems he had WORKED, which was sort of the alternative to the millionaire 90s superstar superhero artists who, even with tracing and plagiarism, often still couldn't produce books on time.
I also remember Bone being far from something "nobody wanted" since I couldn't get a copy of #1 until the 5th printing. It made covers of Diamond's distributor catalog, had a special issue included with Hero magazine, made every critic's top ten list, etc.
If the Netflix thing had happened it could have been something everyone wanted. The potential for a high budget team lead by Jeff Smith would be something...Bone with Disenchantment's budget. That could truly be something great.

Fantastic! Thank you for all the knowledge I was unaware of before and after my exposure to Bone. The Hollywood optioning stuff hurts. I recall the Thompson’s were giving the first Cartoon Books series some good press in The Comics Buyer’s Guide early on. That fan paper’s readership was kind of waning at the time, but it was what got me to pick Bone up around issue five or so. When it started to take off around number eight (ie not losing money or breaking even), Cartoon Books were doing second printings of the first couple single issues before the first TPB to keep it alive on the racks. That was really unheard of for a self-publisher at the early 90s time of “Here Comes IMAGE.” That was so encouraging for everyone in the game at the time. PS - It is 106 degrees here today, but we do have AC. I hope you are cooling off up there. ; )

I reread Bone, all 9 books, and found them just as amazing as when I read them in the sunlight, listening to the same cicadas that Jeff Smith was likely listening as we're both ohioans. Theres an important, (well maybe not to bone but definitely to games as we know them) piece of history for Bone, and that would be "Bone: Out From Boneville", by Telltale. It was an adaptation of the titular book, and was Telltales first adventure game after a computerized version of Texas Holdem. Given that Telltale ended up becoming one of the biggest influences in Video Games and their story telling, I think its a very important if ultimately coincidental piece of lore that Bone was inadvertently responsible for changing the video games industry forever.

Bone is in my mind eternally as one pf those 'Wizard' comics, alongside Spawn and Judge dredd, those comics that look amazing but you could never find.

I caught up with Bone in trade paperbacks when the series was about half done, and adored it immediately, which is why the climactic chapter was such a crushing disappointment. I have never heard anyone properly address, much less explain this. He has to touch the Crown of Horns? It's never introduced or developed as a story element--what it is, why it exists or how it works. Then it turns out to be a wall. There's no puzzle or obstacle. He only needs to touch the wall, and the villain and his (her?) villainous plans crumble. Oh. It's a bad guy beating wall. Those do come in handy.
It's the most perplexing, out of nowhere conclusion that doesn't seem to relate to any character growth or even presenting them with much of a challenge. Did Smith just get stuck or something? It reads as if the cast just shrugs their shoulders and walks off stage. Even more confusing is that nobody else but me seems to have a problem with it as the anti-climax of a 1,400 page epic graphic novel.

absolutely love the bone comics as my favorite comic series as i loved the characters(the bone cousins, thorn especially, grandma ben/lucius,the hooded one, rock jaw basically being how i'd imagine kh would handle shere khan, the great red dragon, the possum kids though i wish we saw them after the mountain blew up,ted bonus for being named after by bro. & the 2 stupid stupid rat creatures.:3) feeling like a mix between disney(the bone cousins do have mickey mouse, donald duck/scrooge mcduck tagging along & goofy vibes, definitely get phoney inspiration from grunkle stan in gravity falls that if it got into kingdom hearts could see the villains/maleficent going after him in a similar way to the hooded one going after phoney from one of his schemes getting him involved.)/popeye(grandma ben was basically a female version of him that tbh thought was more badass.)
alongside ed,edd n eddy/the peanuts/garfield & pogo(at times when watching the specials imagined the bone characters in their roles.)/lil abner(another series i wish got a full animated series outside shorts.) ,story(if anything wish kh went into a direction closer to this for it's story.) & world(remember the locations so well.) that i read so much as a teenager.(being my comic version of my love of one piece with how both their endings were done early.)
really wish the pc games from telltale based off it had continued with what happens later on/still heartbreakingly stings as much as megaman legends 3 the cancellation of the netflix series as bone deserves all the love it gets as it's one of a kind.

I noticed you sounded a tad dismissive of The Smurfs, implying they were something akin to carebears, or at least that the series was made up of gag-a-day fair, with no adventure stories. I admit, I’m no Smurfs expert, any more than I’m an expert on any old thing, however, I have read some of the early stories. Because of this, I highly recommend seeking out the story known as King Smurf (Also known in French as Le Schtroumpfissime, and in Dutch as The Smurführer because I guess they really really didn't want anybody missing the point). It’s a story where their leader, Papa Smurf leaves, and one of them rechristens himself as King Smurf, hoping to become their leader during his absence, only to slip into becoming a tyrant. The Smurfs were every bit as capable of decent length comedy adventures of Scrooge McDuck. and the like. You might even notice a sense of rhythm not dissimilar to Bone itself.

I was the *_worst_* kind of Bone reader, the kind that read it in the comic shop, but didn’t buy it!
Comic Relief (Berkeley, Ca.) let me do it because I was a pretty good customer. I bought _other stuff_ just not Bone.
Oof, if I’d known in ‘93 that Bone was struggling I woulda bought it! I had no idea sales were that low at the time.
