    Mr. Kusanagi as japanese the problem I see about non-jp manga is that they inspire themselves entirely on manga. Mangakas are known to have interest outside of manga. It feels like most non japanese just see shonen jump and try to emulate it ideally you should insert stuff from other media and genres into your work otherwise it gets stale. Thanks you

    • @kusanagi420
      @kusanagi420  ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Yeah, I totally agree. Actually after being in Japan for so long, I also see many Japanese mangaka make the mistake of overusing Japanese manga/anime tropes. The top mangaka of are really good of course, but there are hundreds of manga and light novels that are unoriginal and boring because even a majority of Japanese mangaka, light novelists, and anime studios just want to make some fast money. There’s a reason I don’t really like the whole isekai genre nowadays. Thanks for the honest comment and observation! 😊

    • @MidosujiSen

      Japanese mangaka do this all the time, if anything probably way more often. Every year loads of series are cancelled from Jump for this reason.

      Haha, thanks 😂 I like the aesthetic of Kylo Ren, but I think the writing of the latest trilogy didn’t do him (or any of the characters for that matter) justice. He had so much potential as a character. But I think his visual design looks pretty cool

    • @congaking100
      @congaking100 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@kusanagi420 I agree his visual design is quite phemonal but like most sequel trilogy characters he didn't have depth or plausible motivation. Having participated in a couple of marathon comic book sessions
      (each producing 24 pages in 24 hours)
      there are definitely some shortcuts taken to hit the target deadline.
      However,
      I rather like how high of quality the finish and render your sixteen pages demonstrated.
      It shows me more of what can be possible,
      with sufficient skill, enthusiasm, focus . . . and coffee. LOT's of coffee. XD

    Week 3 Here's what I think. I enjoyed it. I don't have much to say but that and one more thing. I also enjoyed how you were talking about what to do and what not to do as a starting or already mangaka (for STORYBOARDING). It inspires me to become a mangaka. I do need to learn a lot more and how to actually draw. And as soon as I now a lot and I can/want to make mangas I will maybe even become a mangaka. But who knows if that's my approach in the future. Maybe I will at least make one. Anyways I enjoyed it and I say this was a 10/10 week.

    I love that Z pattern in American Comics it’s very similar and yes you need to basically write & then composite each panel in a way that flows for the audiences eyes.
    You also need to do increments of small time jumps that make sense from panel to panel since unlike an animation you can’t show every action take place frame by frame.
    It’s something to keep in my mind constantly when outlining & scripting. I’m working on a webcomic where you gotta do that for someone who’s scrolling and it’s a completely different beast since the artist doesn’t have as much space like a full page (instead it’s basically portrait mode vs landscape 😂)

    • @kusanagi420

    Your work is kinda good tbh.. The simplistic panel with no background was a really good solution for your concept, because it fit perfectly.
    If you work just by yourself, i think u don't have to make the full storyboard (especially if you work on that story immediately). But i suggest that you still make the smaller thumbnail storyboard. The focus here is to make sure that the flow is handled before we actually draw. And also we can tweak some panel's compositions to be more dynamic. It will help us to see the whole manga from a bigger perspective to make our game plan

    14 hours, monstrous speed !
    One other thing I experimented to go faster was skipping the rough instead of the storyboard: make a full-size storyboard, and then directly ink on top of it. I hear some artists do that. It was a fun experiment. I did 5 pages, but didn't record my worktime lol.
    My first printed manga was made fast on a deadline too, I wanted to be in conditions close to a pro. A 40 page booklet with 21 manga pages, I did it all in 20 days, from start to final pdf(I sent it to print immediately after).
    If I recall correctly the storyboard took me 8 days actually, so the drawing of the pages and the making of the booklet in itself (bonus pages, covers, layout, pdf edition etc) were done in 12 days.
    Storyboard is one of the most time-consuming stages indeed haha.
    I'm actually about to get into the drawing phase for a new manga right now. I gave myself till december 31st to publish my chapter (18 pages). It's a 4-koma so it should theorically be a bit faster but we'll see haha. 13 days left lol.
    Nice video.

    1. Art 2. Story 3. Delivery
    I usually disagree with people (mostly because of language imprecision) but I found myself struggling to disagree with above. However, reflecting on the Manga that stands out to me the most, it's what I've been calling:
    1. What they added and what they did not add or else the limit of what they added +
    2. The panels format and the interaction of these on a page eg different panel types, breaking panels, each individual panel, the whole effect of the page with the cumulative effect of the panels and I guess as you point out the story flow with a Right-Left Z-shape standard.
    I feel the author of Chainsaw Man does the above one of the best I've seen. I am almost zero artist so it is only personal impression. Btw I really did feel GOOD hearing you would suffer for your inexcusable crime of revealing a CM Spoiler, so callously! So if that was the effect you were going for, it worked.
    I think Delivery might be the best word to describe the above succinctly, but I also think there's even more to it than just the combination of all the above coordinated to produce the emotional effect in the reader that is intended. I think also, there's a deeper aesthetic the artist is trying to create emerge as well?
    There I said I always disagree with people.
    Your silent story with the trek up the sanctuary steps felt very good in both art and story and delivery. However it just needed a specific aesthetic to make everything in harmony and not individual components of these things and then it would have gained first prize imho (the story was the best one I read out of the small samples I chose to read) and I liked the art especially (crisp, energized but controlled style).
    Your Patreon offer seems well thought out and inspired given each Patreon gains a little art card as well as buying a coffee. I wish I could support 50+ Patreons but I am not successful enough even if I am wise enough to think to do so. If you did a 10$ tier could each Patreon at that level request a specific small piece of art each month?

    • @kusanagi420
      @kusanagi420  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the feedback!
      So to sum it up for me:
      Highest Priority = Delivery
      High Priority = Story
      Low Priority = Art
      Chainsaw Man is pretty good but I think Fujimoto’s other works are actually better, like “Goodbye, Eri”.
      Regarding the Patreon I think I’ll stick with $5 dollars for now. It’s a good price for people who want to support me and to be honest I don’t want to overwhelm myself with custom things for each individual Patreon because that will take so much time and that defeats the purpose of me becoming a TH-camr/Mangaka. I appreciate your comments though!

    When you mentioned the backgrounds and that there were little to no backgrounds I think that during fights its better to not have detailed backgrounds or just use lines to indicate movements or black backgrounds since you want the focus to be the characters and adding backgrounds would kinda take away that focus and impact of the fight

    As a fellow comic creator who's also trying to find my audience, I'm really enjoying this videos. Very relatable and you have a cool style as both a mangaka and as a vlogger.

    I discovered SMA because of you and I wanted to join, however I am preoccupied with a fan manga I'm creating right now and I wanted to finish it as soon as possible, it has 30 pages. When I learned that the audition is only up until April, I thought I don't have enough time because I draw so slow, and also I'm busy because of college. But this vid inspired me, through sheer fuckin will I'm gonna power through these 30 pages of fan manga and finally start the story I'm planning to submit

    • @Amelia_PC
      @Amelia_PC 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@rivmations With experience, you can do something between 8 to 10 cartoonish/manga-ish pages a day without backgrounds :) (I'm a comic book artist - almost 20 years in this, US industry. If I can reach this, anyone in the industry can, definitely.).
      If not, it doesn't matter. Don't let a publisher make you a slave. That's more important.
      From one artist to another: big high 5 :D

      @@Amelia_PCAwesome to see you doing this for that long. Would you recommend some of your published work? I am interested in reading it.

    • @Amelia_PC
      @Amelia_PC 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BUCKikwi I (AmeliaWoo) only worked as an artist for the publishers (US only, there's an old and outdated list on ComicVine. I had to write like that because it's the third time YT deleted my answer). Now, for creator-owned projects, after seeing what's out there, I'm leaning towards Kickstarter for my project. 8-10% gross revenue from a publisher just doesn't seem worth it, especially considering poor sales figures.
