The reason his name is “Catwalker” is because he’s putting on a performance for Ladybug by pretending to be what he thinks she prefers. He’s quite literally putting on a show, presenting himself as some pretty object to be shown off. Like a model walking down the catwalk.

My problem with the bodysuits isn’t the fact that they are young. Bodysuits aren’t inherently sexual, it’s all about human intent and such. But it’s LAZY. Chat Noir’s is better, with actual shoes, but they didn’t give Ladybug anything. And, with the added lore about the outfit being what they desire… you’re telling me that Marinette, the fashion designer, would go for something so simple? And what teenager would go so simple anyway?
On the pelvis yoyo, it’s just weird. It’s not strategically placed for the heroes anyway. I think they wanted something symmetrical, which is why it isn’t on the side, but it’s a poor design choice. Not just for teenagers, but for adults too.

I think the high amount of bodysuits has a pretty simple explanation: they're just easier to animate. Less cloth flying about, less textures you gotta render, etc. In a kids show with so many costume designs it was probably the most utilitarian choice to make a lot of the outfits simple. Kim’s design is actually an accurate portray of what the monkey miraculous is based off of..Sun Wukong or The Monkey King. Wukong in Journey to the West was in the best way to put it annoying or childish. So his design be chaotic is actually pretty on brand for who it’s based off of. Miraculous are animal spirits that embody concepts of the world. Tikki embodies Creation while Plagg embodies Destruction. Longg embodies Perfection, Nooroo embodies Transmision, Duusu embodies Emotion, Barkk embodies Adoration, the goat is Passion, and so on. In my opinion, Kitty Noire’s design is the most foul, revolting, vomit-inducing superhero design in this show. Yes I searched up synonyms for “disgusting” just to find words to describe how atrocious her design was. Now, I’m usually an optimistic person that likes looking for the positive sides of things, but in this case, there is nothing positive (ok fine I’ll admit the design of her attire is actually not that bad, and I kinda like how it leans towards a casualish badass punky look rather than your typical skintight bodysuit). When I first saw footage of her, I immediately assumed she was a villain because of how vile her design was. It looks like Halloween got sick and puked all over her, and they’d probably puke again after seeing her horrid design. What did they think they were doing with those orange eyes? That sickening messy yellow and green hair? NEON GREEN LIPS?? It’s like the designers spun a wheel to choose her different attributes because everything is so random and doesn’t go together in an aesthetically pleasing way AT ALL. There were so many better ways they could’ve gone about the design of a sweet character like Zoé and they chose all the wrong ones.

This is overall a pretty good video, but your bias in certain costumes definitely bogged it down a bit.
Sure, everyone has bias, but to act as if other costumes are bad while others are good while both suffer from the same problems feels like a double standard.
I’m not a character design wiz, but criticizing King Monkey’s design by saying “it’s silly” but then immediately doing a 180 and saying you like Rooster Bold’s design despite it also being considered silly, feels unfair. You didn’t actually talk much about the design of King Monkey, besides saying it looked goofy and the hair didn’t work, but considering the design’s so heavily based on Sun Wukong, the hair makes sense.
Same goes to Viperion and Aspik, I feel both designs are very similar not counting the swimming cap, so implying one is more recognizable as a snake than the other even though both are super similar feels a bit wonky.
Maybe that’s just me though, I haven’t watched the show myself.
(also you could’ve just. Googled Sun Wukong and Journey to the West. This is a TH-cam video, you can do research for it beforehand yknow)
    Edit: spelling

    • @abigaillynnarts
      @abigaillynnarts  ปีที่แล้ว +148

Hey I really appreciate this comment :) for the king monkey one, my main criticism with it being silly is that the entire concept of it is the be silly, his powers are silly, his costume is silly, his thing to make other people’s powers not work, the entire concept is that he exists to be silly, whereas with rooster bold most of the “this seems a little silly” comments were guided towards certain areas of the design, specifically the feet and the mask, but not the concept of the character as a whole.
For Aspik and viperion, I feel that viperion fits better as a design because of its strength with shapes, it’s form, and it’s contrast between colors, while Aspik is a lot weaker in those areas, which is why I rank him lower. Yes they have similar colors and similar forms, but luka’s design utilizes those design aspects a lot better than Adrien’s does.
Also I agree that I could have done more research into sun wukong, and if this were a franchise I cared about, I absolutely would have. I’m already doing much more research than I would like to for my villains video, so in the future (more so on my future second channel rather than this one) there will be more “research” into things, I’m also rewatching mlb to make some video essays on why the show is badly written, so the context is slowly beginning to come back for me rather than in this one where I’m approaching half the designs without a clue what’s going on :)

I feel like you've heard this comment a lot but I think Kim's monkey design being based on Sun Wukong is really nice. Sun Wukong is a Chinese mythological god and, maybe it's because I'm asian, it was immediately recognisable to me. Sun Wukong is known to be a trickster and that suits Kim's personality of being aloof and chaotic and jumpy quite well.
They could've done way better on the design though, there are many Sun Wukong inspired characters that do it way better (Monkey King from Dota 2, that one Talus skin from Paladins, even the more loosely inspired Tang Xuan from Dislyte come to mind). Maybe more red and gold instead of that ugly, dull beige, looser and more flow-y cloths like bellowed pants or a cape or even large pieces of rope, shaggier hair or even just more asian inspired clothing in general.
Sorry to seem like every other comment but I just wanted to show how versatile and recognisable Sun Wukong is as an inspiration to monkey based character designs (at least recognisable to me, because I was surprised not many people knew Goku was inspired by him). Hell, even I've made a character inspired by him. Sorry for the rant, but I just have a soft spot to Sun Wukong and I thought it was pretty ignorant that you dismissed this homage, a single google search would've immediately told you about it
edit: ive just realised that Kim is Vietnamese, and I see some people complain that he's a Vietnamese character being inspired by a Chinese mythology, but I will say that Sun Wukong has many iterations that travel across East and Southeast Asia, so to me its not that weird because of how recognisable he is in Asian culture as a whole, but it is a little messed up that they didn't give him a Vietnamese inspired mythology costume because until I read the comments, I didn't even know he was Vietnamese. I'm not in defence of Thomas, he has done some batshit insane things to the asian characters in the story, but I feel like to dismiss an asian character being inspired by an asian mythology is quite shady

Astrocat doesn't even really work for that argument because he was already black so nothing changed, except the massive glowing neon wings screaming "notice me", just like Ladybug who was red- stayed red- and became a Vegas sign. @@thefresheststar Because character design and costume design should tell you something about the character. Even in the most high fantasy magical settings the designs need to fell grounded, not because of realism, but in order to convey info to the viewers.
Ofc, you can make a design purely out of things that look cool, but you run into the risk of running yourself into a corner if it isn't even a little bit grounded into the setting.
Functionality is one way to do it as the viewer can easily recognize the different parts of the costume as serving a purpose. i.e. an astronaut helmet or thick clothing will signal the audience about a significant change on the environment that requires those changes (like being in space).

Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is a character from the Chinese epic Journey To The West. Journey To The West is one of the four great classic stories from China. It is a very old very culturally important story.
Sun Wukong is probably the most popular character in the story. As someone who knows a lot about the story, I think that the design actually does a very good job of capturing the essence of the monkey king, especially with the mask. The hair is also very indicative of the monkey King. If you look at any character that is based off of Sun Wukong, you’ll find that that hairstyle is quite popular in his depictions. I do wish they had added more red to his costume, though as Sun Wukong is often depicted with a bit more red. Sun Wukong also was also described as having red eyes caused by smoke damage, that would’ve been cool to include on the design.

What’s exhausting to me about Sparrow is that the entire reason the design hides every aspect of her identity is because she can’t let any of her friends and family know she’s putting herself in danger by being a superhero….. you know, the entire basis of the superhero identity crisis plot line? They managed to successfully achieve everything the main cast hero designs lacked in a one off character design for a movie special….

Honestly I agreed with most if not all of your analysis with the hero costumes. But the way you criticised King Monkey just gave me the ick, Sun Wukong. Is a iconic Chinese book character, and ignoring the stereotypical inspiration they given King Monkey’s design.
Your tone used on ‘Journey to the west’ gave me such an ick, it sounded so condescending and ignorant?? And the whole comment of it not being a large part of pop culture is just entirely false, Sun Wukong is the inspiration of Sun Goku. Which even if you don’t watch the show, you gotta at least know about the character. And for the show to be based off CHINESE culture to begin with. And our main character, marinette being half Chinese. It just felt so ignorant and arrogant, it’s evident that you didn’t do any research on the topic before you posted this video essay. Which, this is a PRE-script video, you had plenty of time to do so. And it’s just plain ignorance not to do research on Sun Wukong, MLB on its roots is based off the Chinese zodiac signs. Hence, the animal themed superheroes. (Although I really don’t know why they put cat and ladybug there because it’s not in the Chinese zodiac at all, the cat has a bit of history to it but ladybug doesn’t.)
I did really enjoy your video, but hopefully you do more research in your future videos especially those related with cultures.

Yeah, that was baffling. Love how she assumes that Journey to the West "just must not be that big a thing in Western culture" and not that SHE'S just ignorant. Pure arrogance because no. Journey to the West is arguably one of THE most influential stories in all of literature, it's EASILY up in the bracket with the works of Shakespeare and Dante Alighieri. There are countless tropes, character archetypes and arcs, plot beats and more that can be traced directly back to it. If she's seen pretty much ANY anime or anime inspired work (like Miraculous), then she's seen work that has shades of Journey to the West.

For the lady ice outfit, yes it’s obviously not functional, but adding anything that restricts any movement would be less realistic. There are body suits that can keep heat trapped (ik cuz i have one myself). If you added a coat that wasnt thin or skin tight it could get caught or be used to the enemy’s advantage and leave you in a position where you could be in a lot of danger. Honestly anything that could possibly put you in immediate danger is immediately dropped a grade, no matter how pretty you can make a suit it has to be able to keep you safe, make sure you can move around, it cant restrict your vision, and it has to be confortable as to not distract from the fight itself.
Any thing like long belts, tail coats, capes, any hair that obstructs vision, sunglasses, jackets, baggy anything can all be a risk to the safety and well-being of any character, if you look at marvel, all of their designs are never including any of these unless the character can handle themselves even with it. For example Dr. Strange has a cape but Practically has eyes everywhere and can obviously handle himself. You said that you would criticize these costumes based on 3 rules one of those being functionalism, even when looking at rooster bold who can obviously be pulling by the tail if the enemy was close enough he was still put relatively high up. And yes it looks more like a rooster but they couldve made it shorter rather than long.(Theses are my opinions and im open to criticism)

@@emackenzie yes but if the show was realistic all the characters would absolutely be dead by now, its not a matter of the shows context, it’s what is the most safe for the characters. If you put a real person in a real fight setting and had these features, you’d be setting them up to get killed. If you look at The incredibles for example (its a weird example but it makes sense) Edna makes the hero’s super suits and she is strictly against capes, this is because lot’s of clients got killed when she had them wear capes and she even uses this (i think) to get Syndrome, Buddy Pine, killed. This is one of many reasons why its a bad design choice and unethical.

When you said that Nathaniel was the only character in this show that you cared about, I literally screamed out loud in happiness because OMG YESSS SAME!!!! This show doesn't deserve him. I could write an entire essay explaining why I relate to him so much and how he had so much potential to become a great character and hero that the show refused to tap into. Also can we just talk about how awfully bad a debut episode Penalteam was for Nathaniel? I mean, seriously! Nathaniel literally has a fascination with superheroes and a hero persona he created for himself! And yet he had one of the most god awful hero costumes, powers and debut episodes in MLB if not the entirety of fiction! And his reaction to finally becoming a superhero for real was kinda underwhelming too. They could have done so much more with him to make him an actual memorable hero, but sadly that's too much to ask from this show

I have a second channel in the works where I’ll be breaking down the Mlb seasons and I realized upon rewatching that evillustrator is the only episode I liked because it presented the opportunity for marinette to have won the battle against Nathaniel without a battle at all. If she hasn’t opted to manipulate him, and just have a genuine conversation with him, he likely would have renounced hawkmoth and the conflict would have been resolved completely peacefully and without the use of superpowers, which would be a great message that you don’t need powers to solve every problem you may encounter. Given that Nathaniel was very clear form the beginning that his intentions were never to hurt anyone (until manipulated by marinette,) and his only desire was for marinette to return his feelings, there was a great chance for a much more mature take on their interactions, and I wish the show had the idea to go through with that.

I still think the power of the Goat works for him? Sure the costume is kinda trash- but he literally has the practically the same power he had when he was Evillustrator. He can create anything he can imagine, and when he is considered an "Adult" he'll have unlimited uses. I don't think any of the Miraculous powers are dumb, cause any power can be crazy strong if used by the right person. Hell, the Pig and Eagle powers can literally be instant "I Win" powers if used correctly. Genisis is just lower on the list cause it's just a worse Lucky Charm lol

    • @whatever5401
      @whatever5401 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@slimeycorp in my opinion, what makes the Goat Miraculous such a god awful power from a narrative standpoint isn't that it's weak (because it can be strong if used correctly), but the fact that it's unoriginal. I mean, it's literally just Lucky Charm! I don't know how you would even write stories with it without neutering Lucky Charm. Just take its appearance in Penalteam. Any other episode the lucky charm would have given Marinette the wand and the episode would have played out the same. But this episode it gave her the easel and paper…which wasn’t key at all to saving the day. They could have planer without it (it would have made more sense for the goat to make the easel ladybug got the wand so they could plan) or used sticks and dirt or something. And that sucks, because each Miraculous should serve a unique purpose that other Miraculouses can't. I also hate how laughably on-the-nose both the power and the weapon is for Nathaniel. The writers literally went - oh yeah Nathaniel is an artist, so let's give him a paintbrush as a weapon and practically the same power as his artist akumatized self! Like - can you imagine if the Cat Miraculous gave you the power to be a really good model, just to match Adrien? Can you imagine if the Monkey Miraculous' power revolved around swimming? Can you imagine if the Fox Miraculous' weapon was a camera just for the sake of matching Alya? Imo, Miraculouses' powers and weapons should be based on their animals and concepts instead of their holders. Shape the holders' character arcs around what their Miraculouses represent, not the other way around. And sure, on-the-nose Miraculous powers/weapons have existed before the Goat, but at least in those cases they either serve a unique enough purpose, are sufficiently distinct from other Miraculouses, or actually match their concept/animal. The Goat just doesn't have that. What does the concept of Passion have anything to do with creating objects? Since when were Goats associated with artistic passion? A redditor came up with an alternative power for the Goat that centered around the concept of Equilibration (which imo matches Goats way better) and honestly I wish that was what we got

I'm not here to watch kids being sexualized or find them into any compromising positions or angles, at all. However, for you to find simple lazy suits (most likely due to how restricted budgets tend to be, not to mention lack of creativity) as something bad just because they are one-piece clothes, it's a bit silly. They are not enhancing any parts of their bodies, they are not showing inapropiate outlines or have those hedious jiggle physics most people are always on the look for. They are just flat coverups, nothing more.
The Monkey King reference for the monkey suit in miraculous is actually one of the very few things most people enjoy (I'm refering to the inspiration for it, not the actual final art or powers, because those are just hedious). I'm a bit miffed how poorly you described it, specially because you could have simply googled it before spewing non-sense like it didn't appear to be a big deal in pop-culture on the US. Lego literally made a series with him, and there's a bunch other series, references, cartoons and even comics about it. @abigaillynnarts  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You’re right, I suppose a blend of terminology of Chinese monks similar to the fictional ones of fu’s past along with more youxia centric terminology would be much better than using the term samurai, since it is predominately a Japanese term and title, the general style of the outfit does defintiely read as more Japanese samurai inspired attire than youxia, since youxia are usually depicted with way more layers of fabrics and less armor than samurai, and fu’s turtle design is predominately armor that follows a lot of standard samurai stylistic choices, especially in the shoulder pads and side armor paneling. Though again I do apologize for the wrong terminology in regards to fu’s own nationality, that was my bad, I do think the fault of the design reading as more Japanese does rest on the designers shoulders however.

very surprised you didn't know who sun wukong was, especially as someone whos experienced in character design. there is so much media that takes inspiration from the character, such as dragon ball z (goku is literally named after wukong since the script translates to "son goku in japanese kanji), monkie kid, naruto, league of legends, warframe, and so many more titles that are popular in the west. like,, thats a very small fraction of media from whats out there.
if you ever wanna improve in character design, please look into inspirations of popular characters, because i guarantee that opens up so many doors of great designs that you can reference in improving as an artist.

53:36 Then this is merely a disagreement on what’s most important with the design. I think it’s great because it matches the character and their personality while also being distinctly monkey like. The staff as the weapon is… questionable because that’s Chat’s weapon and I don’t like overlap. I get the staff is iconic but it annoys me to no end!

The entire miraculous is based on journey to the West, and the staff makes sense as the weapon, because of who this design is based off of sun wu kong( I really hope I didn't spell that wrong), actually, use that as their weapon so it makes sense

Journey to the West is a Chinese novel published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty and attributed to Wu Cheng'en. It is regarded as one of the greatest Classic Chinese Novels, and has been described as arguably the most popular literary work in East Asia. miraculous' king monkey is very similar to how monkey king, one of the main characters of the novel, is usualy depicted. things like the head piece, the bo staf, king monkey's stance and movements and most importantly his name, make the paralel to monkey king very clear.

I do definitely get the annoyance with a western superhero like Spider Gwen having pointe shoes, but I feel like for a more magical girl-esc superhero (like the ones in miraculous because lets face it, the transformations and shit are clearly inspired by magical girls even if most of the elements of the show are western superhero inspired) where the practicality of an outfit is (generally speaking) second to the aesthetic of an outfit, it’s more passible (to me) because 1. They do definitely look good with the outfit (at least In my opinion) and 2. If a character gets to have control over their outfit’s appearance (which is the case in miraculous) chances are the magic will make it so that they won’t suffer from the typical problems an outfit like theirs would cause them, hence most magical girls having poofy skirts and ribbons and short skirts and big stiff boots and ruffles, because whatever magic is giving them powers and a costume likely wants them to be able to have the costume they want without suffering.
And even then, I think if it’s an element out of the character’s control and it’s addressed, it’s fine. In an au for a show I watch that i made, one of the characters does ballet and loves it, and the magic artifacts force their fighting methods to align with their interests (one of the other characters fights with a magic tennis racket, for example) so he got stuck with a move set based around ballet. Sure, his feet don’t hurt like hell when transformed, but he deals with pain from doing practice out of hero work and pain from doing hero work.
Sorry for the rant, please don’t get upset with me for any of my opinions I think I clarified well enough that this is just how I feel about shit so sorry if not 😭

I think your opinion is completely valid! I’m glad you left such an in depth and detailed comment. For me personally I just don’t prefer most things to be explained away with magic like the pointe shoe thing, for a lot of people it’s completely passable and fine, but for my personal preferences, it feels like a weak excuse as I prefer things to be much more realistic and gritty, which is why in general I’m not really a fan of magical girl shows. It’s really just a personal preference thing and I completely get it that some people are cool with it just being magic while to me it’s not cool, and I think it’s ok to have those differing opinions :)

@@abigaillynnarts totally valid bro I get it, as a writer magical girl stuff is one of the few situations where I’m fine with a weak excuse like “because it’s magic”, otherwise it feels uncalled for because the story is typically too grounded in reality and not magic

      @abigaillynnarts  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@PhilFromhec I’m a writer as well, I definitely avoid anything magical girl related despite my work typically being in the fantasy genre, but again since my preferences are more realistic and gritty my work also reflects that so write in much more of a gritty dark fantasy vibe, definitely not the lighter more modern magical girl settings lol

Journey to the west is a Chinese classic written over 4000 years ago, its basically a study on the human psyche. Wukong is the allegorical representation of the human mind, thought and impulse. Pigsy represents desire, sandy represents human obedience and comfority, the dragon horse represents the human will (though he doesnt do much) and Sanzang represents the human heart. This piece of literature inspired alot of pop culture like son goku from dragon ball, the trope of the five man band, and hot headed protagonists. Im sure theres more but those are what i can name off the top of my head, Overly sarcastic productions has quite a few videos on jttw if you wanna know more (assuming you haven't i am pretty late to this video)

Okay, I see how people might look at Caprikid and think 'demon', especially without knowing that it's supposed to be animal-themed. The red hair and the goat horns come off as a bit 'Satan-y' given the basic associations people have with them. But I'm sorry, those horns immediately read as being a ram's to me; what reference image was used such that someone said deer before goat?
Antelope makes a lot of sense for a guess, though. Goats tend to be depicted with more circular horns, but an antelopes seem to be more straight (though they're probably about the same in real life, but for a cartoon goat my first thought goes to curly horns)
I do wonder about the heavy use of black on the body. Just looking at images of goats, I'm seeing a lot of white and brown (I know there are goats with black coats, but they seem to be a little bit more rare, but idk), so maybe leaning into that would have helped just that slightest bit in making the design read as a goat?
The fur is a really nice addition to the suit, though.

Okay I'm sorry. Got to admit that I've never watched the show.
But I was interested in seeing your take on the character designs.
When I first saw the bull and rooster I realized immediately that they were trying to go for a Chinese zodiac theme. That's probably why I recognized the kid as a Ram.
It would also explain the second dragon suit that you talked about. I believe that's a Chinese dragon, which is why it doesn't fit the themes that you believe are associated with dragons.
And that led me to another thought, Is this whole show French? Because I feel like you're looking at it through an American lens. Like not color schemes and things, because that's completely fair. But certain aspects of the designs are probably inspired and referenced in ways that don't really make sense in English.
And this is definitely where you became confused on the monkey costume. It is a reference to the old Chinese story monkey King: journey to the west.
There's been several anime that have made references to other references to this design. Lol. I think it was the right choice for this character.
