I think Mario struggling with the game level-style obstacle course was a good decision. Mario was able to parkour througb Brooklyn because he grew up there. He's familiar with the layout, and he knows how things work. The game level-style obstacle course has a bunch of stuff that's not only new to him, but also doesn't really fit into his view of how things should work; like the donut blocks. Yeah, he watches Peach do it, but using the donut block example again, he didn't know the donut block would fall before he stepped off of it until he experienced it himself. Well, that and I think he was more mesmerized with Peach's performance on the course, rather than the peculiarities of the course itself.

Ehhhhh I don't know about that, because it is then putting down Luigi fans, he's a coward sure, but he's proven to be as much of a hero as Mario (which is spoiler spoiler spoiler). It could've been worse, but it also could've been better, they didn't need to make Luigi who is arguably the better brother with his abilities, be the damsel in Distress. Heck they didn't need a Damsel in Distress at all if they want Peach to be the strong independent women type (which I don't agree with much either, but also could've been worse), Bowser taking control of the kingdoms... just the plot A, they didn't really need a plot B, especially if Mario is supposed to be a hero, he'd do it because he wants to help people, not because he needs a motivation.

My guess is that Illumination might do so when the Mario movie gets to be enough of a cult hit that executive's money senses start tingling (though hopefully not to the point they impede on the creation process, like they've unfortunately done with most other art/media...)

I don't disagree, but even Nintendo down plays the Luigi's Mansion series, it is a spin off. So I don't doubt it being possible, it's just I see it more as a spin off series rather than movies, especially since they're now competing with Sega again, who is doing the same with Knuckles, getting a spin off series on Paramount that will tie into the 3rd movie that releases next year.

    • @luciacamacho444
      @luciacamacho444 ปีที่แล้ว +147

And even then, Mario, who did not grow up there and lived in a place in which he had never done or had the necessity to do the insane gymnsatics needed to complete the course (or even to live in the Mushroom Kingdom, the place where platforming is a daily routine), took one single night to almost complete it and adapt to the place.
Luigi also adapted very fast to the Mushroom Kingdom, given how he was as skilled as his brother in the last moments of the movie, when both moved to the Mushroom Kingdom.
In honesty, Mario&Luigi adapting so insanely fast to life in the Mushroom Kingdom was a much bigger power move than Peach completing the course on first try after having grown up in the Mushroom Kingdom where even the weakest Toads have better physical endurance than regular humans from Earth due to their lifestyle in which you have to literally jump constantly from one place to another.

I'm actually glad that they decided to give Luigi the "damsel in distress" role instead of Peach. I feel like this gave Mario and Peach more time to bond and form a relationship. Peach being the damsel in distress works just fine for the games since the stories are simple, and it's usually implied they already know each other, but it wouldn't work here unless they'd met before or spent the first half of the movie together. Mario was clearly the brother that had the lack of confidence, not Luigi. Luigi was somewhat confident, just sometimes scared. Mario had a whole growth arc that spanned the movie, which included the training course. Mario was always more capable, he just didn’t believe in himself and more put up a front to be a role model for Luigi.
I would have liked more Luigi action. He is a favorite. But I understand why they pulled a 3D World and held him captive until late in the game- I mean, movie. They needed a motivation for Mario.
The movie did have a good story. It was standard fare, but good, which is fine by me. The draw was more everything else and that did not disappoint. All in all I had a great time.
I’m more confused by critics saying it was like a game like it was a bad thing especially when that’s how it was advertised. What else were they expecting.

Unless the princess is the only one who knows how to go back, thus giving them a motive to rescue her. I think it makes sense that Luigi was capetured. It gives Mario a strong motivation to fight Bowser. Maybe if Luigi was't capetured Mario wouldn't have a good reason to stay and fight for the mushroom kingdom. Yeah it is a shame Luigi did not get more screentime. Maybe if they made the prison scenario different, in a way the prisoners could interact more with eachother and they have more space to do stuff, it would be possible to give Luigi more developement. However I feel like it was enough for him to feel like he is always burden and he should stand up for himself and for others like his brother does for him. It makes sense why peach is so independent in this movie. She's been trained to defend herself, but she also knows that she is no match for bowser, which is why she basically immediately surrendered after being surrounded and evacuating her people. She's better than Mario purely on experience, and she uses that to fight back. Bowser could have easily just abducted her and locked her away in a tower, but that wasn't his goal. Everything Bower did was to impress her, not imprison her. They hint at Luigis mansion with Luigis flashback as a kid, which will probably be explored more in the sequel. Even with peach standing up to bowser, she used a sneak attack to catch him off guard and only momentarily stopped him. Mario and Luigi were the real powerhouses in the movie, it felt realistic in a sense that she wouldn't go without a fight but be basically helpless, peach knows this which is why she went to the Kang family for help in the first place. It felt like a blend of her game self and the original 1993 Mario movie, all the way down to how they handled certain events and elaborated on some things. I also like how they did donkey Kong it didn't feel like he was just a jerk with no redeeming qualities. He just felt like he was giving Mario a hard time because he was butthurt about the L he took but didn't really hate him. It felt really organic how they played off each other.

But after watching the movie, I was blown away. Pratt does a decent performance as Mario. Jack Black absolutely killed his performance as Bowser. That’s why I think Detective Pikachu worked so well. The game play into itself was much more lax compared to say Pokemon Ranger where you’re constantly moving with the game. I think that it was smart of this movie to incorporate a lot of references to the game so that even if you’re not interacting with the movie as you would in a game, you’re still able to go “Hey! I recognize that!” Overall, I think a lot of people were overly critical of it from the first trailer. It’s not going to go down in history as some legendary film. But it was decent. The movie was all-ages friendly, but the story felt distinctly adult.
Think about it: Mario is a middle-aged man with a dead-end construction job, he quits and dumps his life savings into the hopes of making it as a freelance plumber, and his career ends as soon as it begins when the dog interferes and makes them destroy his first client's bathroom; Mario is at rock bottom, and feels shame he let down his brother and family.
Mario is a very adult protagonist with very adult problems.
His conflict is about finally getting the chance to be the hero.
It felt very weird to see this in a kids' movie, and noticing the lack of response from the kids in the audience really cemented the fact kids don't relate to mario the way adults do.

This is why i almost never go off critics reviews. It seems quite often they rate artsy-fartsy movies highly even if audiences think the movie is OK at best, and they often rate popular movies significantly lower than audiences. Critics also often have a strong bias against comedies, animated movies, and especially horror movies so they'll rate even the good ones fairly low. I've seen some great movies with critics scores of 30-50%.

Personally, I think they hit a good sweet-spot with Peach, portraying her as someone who knows her way around, but can still end up in over her head. She knows what she's doing, but she's also just one person, and not "every Jedi." They made her skilled, with her abilities coming from a mix of talent and experience, rather than go to the extreme of either annoyingly useless, or annoyingly OP.
Regarding the obstacle courses, I see your point, but in fairness, they were very different courses. Jumping over a trash can in the sidewalk and darting up a flight of stairs isn't exactly the same as running across falling blocks and triangle-jumping from one projectile to another. He went into it thinking his urban experience would help him, but ultimately, all that really helped him through it was his most important trait: his perseverance. No matter how many times he got knocked down, he kept getting back up, each time getting just a little bit further than the last. And thematically, I think that suits him perfectly.
As for the critics score, let's not forget: these are the same people who gave "Cuties" an 87%. I wouldn't put any stock in their opinions on ANYTHING, never mind film.

I think the main reason for this whole controversy, is that the general audiences doesn't understand that when critics gives a movie 5 or 6/10, that doesn't mean it's bad. It's only mean that the movie is average at best. It's inherently the same as common people who's arguing that the movie it's 7/10, calling it: "fun but not great". Because the differences here, critics has watch a sh*t tons of movies that their 7/10 spots is reserved for something more prevalent. I mean, if you only had watch 50-100 movies top, that consists of Disney's animation, Netflix romances and MCU, of course your 7/10 spots would be more available. I go back to Mario 2, some of the more modern multiplayers and the party games/Mario Kart, so I'm cool with her being competent.

And I'll be honest, while it might've been jarring at first when Luigi and Mario got the Super Star, with Luigi overcoming his cowardice, when you think about it, it makes sense. Throughout the first 20 minutes or so of the movie we see Luigi not being as good as Mario. Then, when he's separated from Mario he's attacked by the Dry-Bones, narrowly escaping until he's captured by Shy Guys. We then see a flashback of how, since they were kids, Mario's been coming to his rescue. Then, there's him needing to be rescued at the end by Mario. Luigi had been saved by Mario all his life, then when Mario needed it most, Luigi finally stepped up and saved him for once. Sure, it would've been nice to see a bit more of this character development on screen, maybe have Luigi have some dialogue referring to it, but it's not entirely bad how they did it.

I might be in the minority here, but i honestly thing a 54% or 5/10 is fair score for this movie. I still enjoyed the Mario movie but its pacing felt really fast and while the references and easter eggs were great they don't automatically make it a better movie. And i know a lot of people are saying " Well, what did you expect from a mario movie" or "It's just a kids movie" First of all, that's a terrible argument, because it's an instult to the medium of animation with and just because something is aimed at a younger demographic doesn't mean it should be shallow or an excuse for poor quality (not saying the mario movie is poor quality). Look at Puss in Boots the Last Wish, people were just expecting just a silly cat movie you know, "a movie for kids" but no it blew everyone away not only with it's breathtaking art style and animation but interesting characters and it's great message on the value of life. The film wanted to be somthing more and IT DID IT, which is why people love it, same with the Lego Movie, a movie that took a huge brand and could've just been a simple movie about legos but turned out to be suprisingly deep movie about imagination, creativity, growing up, which in turn all tied back to the brand of Legos. In short, Mario's movie is fine, had fun, wish it was more, 5/10. Rant over.

I don't know what people expected from a Mario movie of all things. This is the problem with hype and fan expectations it ends up letting people down after they don't get what they want it's better to keep your expectations low from the start so you're not disappointed from the finished result. Hype ruins things and is a constant reminder that people need to settle down when it comes to movies like these.

I spected a simple but well developed plot around the mario brothers and the exploration of the mario world, not a bunch if quick souless references who only serve as colorfull keys dandling at nintendo fans who would clap at everything nintendo produces.

@@spinosaurusstriker well some would disagree, some would say the plot is well thought out or at least decent and just because the first film would be mediocre doesn't the sequel will be too nor is mediocrity such a bad thing.
Personally I think it's acceptable for a film to be somewhat mediocre but not souless and boring the people who made it seemed to put effort in it and I think it's all well and good, I'd rather play it safe with the first one but have fun with the sequel.

Just saw the movie myself at the theatre today and yeah its decent. I'd say its biggest problem is the breakneck speed of the pacing, like my god, ever since entering the Mushroom kingdom the pacing goes into overdrive, and that some potential hints of story elements seem to get lost. I know nobody comes to the Mario movie for story, but still it would've been nice if the movie was say 15-20 minutes longer with the scenes extended a bit to give more of an opportunity to develop both the characters to have stronger and quieter moments, as well the world and its elements for newcomers (like those of us who played Mario Kart 8 love to see anti gravity in the movie, but those who haven't will just be confused. Like maybe just some background details with the characters looking around while making their karts to see what they can do or asking the kongs about it).
As for stuff like Mario suddenly being the doofus once in the mushroom kingdom, I definitely still think Mario is built up to be a doofus in Brooklyn too. Like lets not forget the first scene of them in the Pizzeria, they literally get scolded by their old boss, and later on by their family. Plus even then the parqour Mario did near the beginning was comparatively basic to what Peach threw at him on the training course. And for Luigi, I do also think its a little weird how experienced he is by the climax but I think it comes down to what they said to eachother in the beginning and when being reuinted. When they're together nothing can get in their way. Like when Luigi knows Mario is there for him, it opens the world up for him, making him believe he can do as much as he can.
    Just what I observed myself.

Luigi and Peach should've swapped roles. I absolutely despise Hollywood's incessant need to make every female character a Mary Sue.
