It's such a shame too because that's the only thing that'd holding that cutscene back from genuinely amazing. Have Mal burst into bats while making a custom death scream and boom; perfection. So close to perfection here but tripped and fell at the final stretch.
That's so unfortunate because god damn, Arthas actually stabbing Mal'Ganis looks great (even better than in the original where he just swipes at Mal'Ganis). But yeah, had they animated Mal'Ganis to fall over would've completely sold it.
Arthas looks brutal with Frostmourne. It was mystery for me how he got his death knight armor if Lich King back then was encased in ice, and Frostmourne altering the look of his armor seems legit.
2:03 things were pretty hectic so Arthas ditched all formalities and refered to his subordinate by his first name, which luckily happens to be 'Captain'.
As a curiosity, in the Spanish dub of the game (the original one back then,that is) Arthas has one additional line of dialogue after "Succeding you, Father...". As he pulls Frostmourne from Terenas´ corpse, he utters: "Let your eyes close, now that mine are finally open". This is because the script of the game that was sent to Spain was still on production, and the definitive changes hadn´t been done yet. By the time Blizzard was done with the final version, we weren´t told and the line was dubbed and kept.
Say what you will about Reforged, Arthas stabbing Mal'Ganis the way he did in 25:23 is way better than the original. That really is a nice little touch the original cutscene sorely lacked.
20:20 The spider coming out of darkness made me realize things. You are fighting the undead. Your boots deep in partially decomposed, poisonous muck, there are building shrinking with lost souls and you stand against walking corpses, reanimated pieces of bodies and insects.
So much of the strategy of these maps, it seems like almost every one, is "how fast can you do it" and "can you survive the beginning where the enemy has a huge advantage" which honestly kind of sucks because then you're just rushing through the campaign because it punishes you for stalling and the enemy just gets so strong and eventually always wins the war of attrition. As a mainly campaign player, I always liked the long play maps, but this video helped me beat this a lot, it was utterly no challenge after watching your strategy!
Is it ever explained who the Guardian and such are? They are undead by they don’t seem to serve the Lich King, are they perhaps some of the first examples of the Forsaken? Heroes who were raised but were to strong for the Lich King to take control of?
You know, I've been thinking, where did Arthas get his new cloak and new armor? Actually, where do undead units that have armors and clothes get them?! Are there undead tailors sewing wolf fur into cloaks? Undead blacksmiths hammering iron in the cold arctic? Where does the undead summoned their building from?
The blacksmiths in his base probably made it for him. Parts of the undead, like the nerubians, have a legit civilization, so they could be making stuff, at the least fabrics. You got me on the buildings, though :) I just know they haunt a gold mine so they can get gold from it.
If i recall, Arthas' look is actually his old gear but warped and twisted somehow (bullshit evil magic, probably), and the undead structures "revive" their units (or sew them together regarding Aboms), rather than train them like other races unit production structures. It's also possible that Arthas just picked up a bunch of pieces of armor from undead armored units and revenants on the basis of "Hey, this looks edgy enough to go with Frostmourne! Fashion time." while Ner'Zul just shrugged and went with it because being a disembodied spirit didn't take away his fashion standards. Necromancer: "Say, um, new champion of the Lich King? Shouldn't you be hurrying home to destroy Lorderon instead of spending weeks scrounging through random dead people's gear?" Arthas: "Shush, minion. I need a look that matches Frostmourne." Necromancer: "But wouldn't that just make it harder to blend in when you return home?" Arthas: "Firstly, the Lich King is the one recommending my new loo-ooh~ these pauldrons are perfect! Ahem, secondly, you'd be surprised at how dumb my people can be." *later* Sea captain: "Why hello, Prince Arthas with your inconspicuously evil and edgy death themed armor. No red flags about that look whatsoever. Just stroll on to your father while having that large, very evil looking sword unsheathed while the royal guards stand around and do nothing." Necromancer: "...holy shit, how did we not run over these people earlier?"

It is really unfortunate how limited the updates to the maps and in-game cut-scenes themselves are. Not even thinking of truly remaking everything into style that was shown in that Culling preview. I always felt that there were a few more problematic maps and story cut-scenes that could get polished up a bit. I was really sad to even see many of the bugs from classic game still persist in the missions. Some maps felt like they were 100% untouched. My UI still bugged out in the TFT night elf missions where lightning strikes would remove all health bars and tooltips until the next strike:/ It was really annoying. It also a bit of a shame that the usage of TFT rules for units and upkeep has really made the base campaign relatively easy. I am not that great at all, but I managed to finish everything on Hard without ever feeling pressured. Some of the more scary mission (for me, Undead last mission, Orc last mission and a few others) from vanilla version were incredibly easy. I feel that the balance tweaking they made really underestimated how much power that extra upkeep room gives players in addition to being able to stack consumables and tft armor vs damage rules. Luckily, TFT campaign so far (have not finished it yet) feels about right. I guess patches and updates will indeed fix many of the more technical issues, but I doubt they will ever go back to the campaigns and do any more major work on them to boost the quality. Feels a bit like wasted opportunity in that sense.
I think i read somewhere that he presumaby had seen the fact this would lead to great devastation to the world through the invasion of the burning legion.
I dunno when or how you played, but with the original launch CD/DVD 1) the prologue missions were there, but the last three were "custom scenarios" without voice-acting, and 2) once you installed TFT it tended to override ROC rules for most things including unit cost. I remember replaying ROC and being surprised that footmen cost 120g instead of the original 150g - makes a huge difference in how the original campaign was balanced.
These enemies are fucking OP. They only take 1 gold from gold mine but receive much more than that. If you try to stall, you will run out of resources even with all gold mines captured.

Arthas killing Malganis is the only reforged scene out of the 4+ hours of reforged scenes that we were promised. Arthas killing Uther was a nice touch, but it was still mediocre, cuz Arthas killing Uther in combat would have been better, instead of Uther bowing down to Arthas as he kills him. Yeah.
Yup we hoped so too, about refoged. And for the map something is really bronken: all the unit should had suicide on your mortal team, Maganis, in the original he didnt have the infernal, they just insert it in the culling and if someone can remeber (or not you know what to do) the first thing he usualy do was put everyone to sleep.
With all the graphical improvements, it was really funny how Malganis died lol. He just spun and flew away as you said! Even the original death animation was better with the bats and the soul rising up.
Arthas wandered in the cold for so long that he lost not only his sanity but his items and his levels, too. The ills of walking. Edit: one thing I never understood is the colors. Alliance is blue and Horde is red as in WCII, but why is the Scourge purple when you command it instead of green (which was the major color with purple as supporting)? Is it because green was Mal'Ganis and once he's dead his forces are done?
At they risk of sounding like I'm actually _defending_ Blizzard, here… that _Reforged_ Frostmourne cutscenes was actually really well done! Also, that Fallen Paladin model for Arthas looks _amazing…!_ I wonder if his _Classic_ model was updated to match? I really am impressed with this, though. It's pretty beautiful. (Too bad the style still clashes with the rest of the game, though…)
Nice Scary Arthas you have claimed GG m8 Be warned Undead final mission the Gryphon faction bugged out for me they stopped attacking and for 10 min just massing Riders and all of them attacked at the final wave and nuked down kelthuzad in seconds hehe with 1 min left on Hard hopefully be fixed before you reach it and THANK GOD for Checkpoints hehe Dont forget to change your Portrait aswell on every finish

I have the old version and man this looks impossible if you don't attack purple...you can't finish green off because they both fight you one after another and you eventually lose. I got 3 gold mines and still couldn't win vs green directly...

Because Blue is the iconic color for the Alliance; there isn't much more thought put into it than that. Note that all the non-player Lordaeron forces use the Light blue/near-white colors. "Iconic colors" for the player ends up taking precedence over what color would actually be appropriate for the "main" faction of each race. I'm still mildly annoyed that the Warsong Clan switched from Red to Purple, but red is the "iconic" Horde color, so Thrall's forces get that and Grom has to get something else to differentiate him. An argument could be made for Thrall's forces being blue to represent the Frostwolf Clan, but admittedly, Thrall is commanding the Horde as a whole, not just the Frostwolves, so seeing them in blue would be a bit weird.
I gotta say, for all the hate this game is getting (not toatally undeserved) that Arthas taking up Frostmourne cinematic looked really good. It makes me think what they could have done if they had more time.

Keep an eye out on the last Undead mission, Jay. There is a new easter egg in the top center of the map past where they placed the old Hermit Wizard from OG. On a small shallow island there is an NPC that could be a nod to you, named Jay. He doesn't drop anything and I don't think he refers to any Warcraft lore. He could be a reference to a Blizzard employee, but I thought I would point it out so you can look for it when you get there. Love the videos!
That's kind of the whole point of Arthas though; he was a strong fighter with weak, easily manipulated emotions that were exploited to become what that the Lich King desired. His short temper and ego muddled with his sense of justice in a very destructive way.
What Blizzard failed to realize was that WC3 was just too big of a game and task to reforge in one go. It would've taken at least one or two more years to reach all the goals they set for themselves. In fact, I would've liked it if they'd release it gradually (you'd still have to pay the full price, but they'd keep up development); First the Reign of Chaos campaigns, then Frozen Throne and finally Multiplayer. Hell, I'd be fine if it was one campaign at a time.

Blame your perception, not the original. Furthermore, in which direction should they have changed the cinematics? Blizzard had a really easy job. These enemies are fucking OP. They only take 1 gold from gold mine but receive much more than that. If you try to stall, you will run out of resources even with all gold mines captured.

Arthas killing Malganis is the only reforged scene out of the 4+ hours of reforged scenes that we were promised. Arthas killing Uther was a nice touch, but it was still mediocre, cuz Arthas killing Uther in combat would have been better, instead of Uther bowing down to Arthas as he kills him. Yeah.

I loved when you did the enhanced version but you only did human campaign (I think) looking/waiting for more of that.
Yup we hoped so too, about refoged.
And for the map something is really bronken: all the unit should had suicide on your mortal team, Maganis, in the original he didnt have the infernal, they just insert it in the culling and if someone can remeber (or not you know what to do) the first thing he usualy do was put everyone to sleep.
i play the hard mode. there are way more units than in your videos. And dread lord always use infernal. your mode is probably normal.

With all the graphical improvements, it was really funny how Malganis died lol. He just spun and flew away as you said! Even the original death animation was better with the bats and the soul rising up.
Why muradin don't run from arthas take that frostmourne
Arthas wandered in the cold for so long that he lost not only his sanity but his items and his levels, too. The ills of walking.
Edit: one thing I never understood is the colors. Alliance is blue and Horde is red as in WCII, but why is the Scourge purple when you command it instead of green (which was the major color with purple as supporting)? Is it because green was Mal'Ganis and once he's dead his forces are done?

At they risk of sounding like I'm actually _defending_ Blizzard, here… that _Reforged_ Frostmourne cutscenes was actually really well done! Also, that Fallen Paladin model for Arthas looks _amazing…!_ I wonder if his _Classic_ model was updated to match?
I really am impressed with this, though. It's pretty beautiful.

Be warned Undead final mission the Gryphon faction bugged out for me they stopped attacking and for 10 min just massing Riders and all of them attacked at the final wave and nuked down kelthuzad in seconds hehe with 1 min left on Hard hopefully be fixed before you reach it and THANK GOD for Checkpoints hehe

I have the old version and man this looks impossible if you don't attack purple...you can't finish green off because they both fight you one after another and you eventually lose. I got 3 gold mines and still couldn't win vs green directly...

Technically the colour of Lordaeron is White, but in Warcraft 3 the colours of Arthas' expedition is blue for reasons unknown to me.
Because Blue is the iconic color for the Alliance; there isn't much more thought put into it than that. Note that all the non-player Lordaeron forces use the Light blue/near-white colors.
"Iconic colors" for the player ends up taking precedence over what color would actually be appropriate for the "main" faction of each race. I'm still mildly annoyed that the Warsong Clan switched from Red to Purple, but red is the "iconic" Horde color, so Thrall's forces get that and Grom has to get something else to differentiate him. An argument could be made for Thrall's forces being blue to represent the Frostwolf Clan, but admittedly, Thrall is commanding the Horde as a whole, not just the Frostwolves, so seeing them in blue would be a bit weird.

I gotta say, for all the hate this game is getting (not toatally undeserved) that Arthas taking up Frostmourne cinematic looked really good. It makes me think what they could have done if they had more time.

You got lucky. After I killed purple green sent constant attacks with frost wyrms. Seems like some buggy triggers.
How long did you wait? I kill the enemy bases fast enough for them to really come online in many cases.

Keep an eye out on the last Undead mission, Jay. There is a new easter egg in the top center of the map past where they placed the old Hermit Wizard from OG. On a small shallow island there is an NPC that could be a nod to you, named Jay. He doesn't drop anything and I don't think he refers to any Warcraft lore. He could be a reference to a Blizzard employee, but I thought I would point it out so you can look for it when you get there. Love the videos!

Read the book Arthas: Rise of the Lich King. It details it all very well ^^
There is custom campaign in original Warcraft III where Arthas became king of Lordaeron. Jayborino covered it in the past and it looks great.

That's kind of the whole point of Arthas though; he was a strong fighter with weak, easily manipulated emotions that were exploited to become what that the Lich King desired. His short temper and ego muddled with his sense of justice in a very destructive way.

What Blizzard failed to realize was that WC3 was just too big of a game and task to reforge in one go. It would've taken at least one or two more years to reach all the goals they set for themselves. In fact, I would've liked it if they'd release it gradually (you'd still have to pay the full price, but they'd keep up development); First the Reign of Chaos campaigns, then Frozen Throne and finally Multiplayer. Hell, I'd be fine if it was one campaign at a time.
