    It is the 41st Millennium, and there is only War! (and monetisation).
    Warhammer 40k: Lost Crusade is a mobile city builder / hero upgrader / idle game where you guide your lost space marine fleet home to, presumably, have tea and crumpets with the Emperor.
    It's actually quite high quality.
    Thanks to the Patreon Supporters and Twitch subs who keep the channel going, you are the adeptus mechanicus to my machine spirit x

    You’re lucky you only played for a day. I got past all of this. Two weeks in, I’m guild master, highest level in my guild, slowly building a fun and caring community… annnd one ship, one enemy force, wipes out not just me, but everyone in my guild. The entire community collapses and I’m left with about three players without enough resources to rebuild. I filed a complaint with the staff on google play, and their response… and I quote… “This is not a design flaw, but a FEATURE to promote competitive gameplay”. Any game that actively promotes picking on weaker factions for resources which, by the way, are infinitely less than what you need to upgrade at that point, is absolute trash. The entire experience left me with hate. I f%#@ing hate this game.

    My experience was thoroughly enjoying this game for about two weeks, getting into a decent clan and building up my base/army pretty quickly. I had gotten ~3 champs to level 70+, had 4 fleet queues, 3 build queues, could take down level 22+ anomalies and participate in events with my peers. Then all of a sudden I wake up one morning with my power rating dropping from I think ~10 million to about 2 million (As much as my base was worth) as I was attacked by someone with 3 level 100 (maxed) legendary champions and the battle reports basically showed how I lost 90% of my forces and the attacker lost '0'. Literally 0 losses from the attacker. The game provides a system of getting your lost forces back over the course of a few days then this attack was repeated by another player with a similar setup, 3 level 100 legendary champions. Your left in a state of being punched down by players whom paid for the most valued champions/shards and you can't keep up with farming your typical anomalies and resources as you're effectively being reset every few days. I quit after being farmed for 6 more days realizing I didn't have a chance to sustain my base and my clan all felt the same. Everyone got bashed, we couldn't protect ourselves and we just didn't understand how to compete. I'm hoping I had missed a big detail but gave up as so many folks in my clan openly quit and I didn't feel like moving. I dislike most Games Workshop video games, the developers whom acquired the titles are just terrible at making lasting games.

      I can't talk for those in other countrys but in France it's really not that. I once entered a wharhammer shop (only heard of it by name but I didn't know what wharhammer was) and I looked at the minatures, after 10 minutes an employee went to me and asked if I knew about the hobby. I said no and he briefly explained what it was and I got interested so I picked up a random pack with a coll minature at 50€ (aproximatly 50 dollars at the time) and went to buy it. When I did so he looked at the minature and told me "are you sure it's hard to assemble" at this point I didn't know you had to assemble the minatures so I was a little embaressed and so I asked him "Is there some sort of beginner set with easy one" and then he showed me a 30 € ( so cheaper than what I usually wanted to buy pack) with 3 ultramarines a paint set and a brush ( the pack name is assault itercessors + paint set if you want to check). I don't know what are these "Three Kingdoms" gameplay genre called, but all of iterations where "army slowly march to enemy in a base building game" and the player doesn't even see the battles... are all :
    Time and Money Sink
    Overwhelmingly Complex
    Time Boost Rampant
    and worst of all Duplicate Gambling-gated Fan Service/Horny Content
    If you wondering why it designed like this, I'll give you a story.
    I played an anime version of this time gated game which has the initial of a capital Z and filled with girls. Same mechanics, probably more slutty. This game generated the most money when the Koreans, Chinese, and the EN Whales attack over misunderstandings. When they attack each other, everyone spammed Soldier Time Boosts and Healing Time Boosts. In 3 Guilds involved, estimated 10 players cumulatively burned 30000 USD in a single night. I lost sleep as I was involved in the guild and quitted the game right away. Before I quit, I just see how dragged out the game becomes, and how pointless the game becomes. You just see animations moving from point A to B and everyone involved have to see through HOURS of boredom to make sure their number don't go down. The first guy who fallen asleep lost their entire army because the other guy spams time skips Premium Currency. It was just a single night, full of people spamming time skippers. The game has been live for 3 months, and it has multiple dozens of servers. I imagine this kind of All Out War happens daily somewhere within their other 30ish servers. The rankings and time skips are so predatory but it works because these people are horny and childish. They know nothing about the value of money, all they knew is the numbers on the screen and the Waifu/Fan Service they see.
    After I quit, I did some research on Idle Games and somewhere along the "Three Kingdoms" type of infinite Number Racing Game in a system known as "Battle Rating" in League of Angels. The conclusion is alarming.
    They essentialy copy pasted the same Code and UI for at least dozens of games by multiple developers. The shop is the same, the prices are the same, the gacha using this inhumanely predatory "Duplicates Fragments" system, VIP System, and the system always needs to make you wait to sell time skips. These game makes estimated average 30000 USD per day, and that money is spent on essentially nothing of value as the next people will delete your character by numbers alone. It has low development cost and might as well underpaid the developers so badly as they just delivers the same game with SAME KEYWORDS EVEN (keywords : Levy, Escorts, Sultan, Goddess, League, Throne, Kingdom, Waifu, Girls, Anime, Fan Service, Redeem, VIP, Recharge, and many more). Don't get me started on the stolen assets Advertisements as this rabbit hole involves blackmailing other company and threatening them with politics should they deny "business deals".
    These are not games. Nothing of these speaks games. But they are in Play Store.
    Stay away from these nowhere pitiful excuse of "games". These are the Dystopian Sink.

      Is sad, because i am playing final gear, a mech waifu game, with actual gameplay, and different game missions, and is good, girls frontline 2, will come out maybe next year, x com stile gameplay, for mobile, and yet those tipes of games, were the idea is more on single player game, they dont succed, azur lane, is one of the few games with very limited single player, with actual game play with not fair but not bad gatcha, and yet, is no were near, games like sultan throne or those.
      Also there are good games, really good games ideas in mobile, but they are drown, over these boring repetitive things that are not even games, i used to have several like those, i love base buildings, but i progress no where, now i have dawns of titans and i dont even know if i even will continue, the story is not intresting and at least they give you several constructions lines, because i am arriving to the days timers

    Oh man, I played this game for about 3-4 months, the first month being completely sucked into it (and purchasing the $5 second build queue BS,) and then eventually treating it like a daily 20 minute chore until the end where I realized I didn't log in for a week and didn't care. What kept me going that long was the Alliance that I randomly joined, which just happened to be the second strongest on our new-ish server. That was the best aspect of this game, honestly. But, these types of games are made exactly the same as they have been for over a decade and the whales pretty much blew all competition out of the water, bullying the smaller Alliances, and basically dominating the sector. My Alliance held out, offering what miniscule competition we could.
    Then there came a point about 3 months in where it seemed like an all out war was about to break loose. A shadow council of abused Alliances versus the oppressor. Our leader messaged us early one the morning telling us to prepare for imminent war. That was the first bit of excitement I felt in this game, queuing up hundreds of troops, stocking up on combat items, researching all the military tech. And then the time came. And nothing. Apparently, the top brass of the different Alliances in play got together, forged an agreement, and now my Alliance was basically the top dogs' lap dog. They forced a Discord merger so they could keep tabs on us. They sent one of their members to join our Alliance so they had an eye on us. And our leaders just went along with it to "preserve the peace in the sector."
    So disappointing, which is exactly how I would label this game. All that time and effort and it all just turned into a sad old neckbeard's recreation of high school lunchroom politics.

      Sounds very similar to my experience with a game called Ants: Underground Kingdom.
      It's another one of these builder games where you build and upgrade your base and join alliances with other players. The server I was on was very non-toxic. Everyone who was active in the chat got along very well and if anyone would try to disrupt that peace they were quickly dealt with. There was even an agreement with the top 10 alliances that we were not to attack each other. My alliance was number 3 in overall power.
      Then not too long ago, someone in the top alliance became very toxic. Started attacking my alliance for really no reason at all other than a simple misunderstanding. Got so bad that we had to change servers. Granted the next server we were in was just as peaceful but at that point I realized I just wasn't playing much anymore. So I said my goodbyes to everyone, which was honestly quite hard cause I had made a lot of friends there. I stuck around the discord for a bit though thinking maybe I'd start playing again. Then the old leader of the top alliance showed up and started causing trouble in the new server. So that was the end of that for me lol.

      Had quite the similar experience but the people I met there in the alliance I joined were nice and ultimately were what kept me for a while - at least until the chore phase hit me after two months or so.

    • @paperpersona1243

      Omg I had a similar thing happen in another game.
      I started up a guild in Lords Mobile and we were riding high for weeks, while the vast majority of players were new we were able to snag some veterans and they helped the guild get stronger together. We had a few fights with other guilds in the server but it was mostly even and all in good fun.
      Then this guild of whales moved to our server and immediately started dominating. You could tell they were whales cause they would pay extra to move their troops faster... ALL THE TIME! Their armies were always maxed out and no matter how badly you beat them down they immediately had a fully restocked army and rebuilt base.
      So I coordinated a server wide assault on this guild, must have been like 6 guilds total against this one guild of whales... I put out the call to arms, told everyone when the day the attack would happen and honestly it was really exciting, felt like taking back our land from foreign invaders.
      Day of the attack comes and we all send our armies to the whale guild's main base... And it's just not enough!
      I'm talking DOZENS of armies all attacking the same target... And nothing broke through.
      It was ridiculous. We easily had them outnumbered 5:1 yet no one could deliver the final blow, then they started sending out counterattacks... Which was insane because we had depleted our armies trying to attack them, so how did they have a fully rebuilt army while we all scrambled for new troops...
      It's cause they were pouring an ungodly amount of money into the game to the point they were untouchable.
      The coordinated raid failed, and I had to discuss peace with them where they kept making fun of us for being so weak... That's when I realized that game isn't meant for people like me who like to strategize and overcome obstacles, it's for people who are willing to drop thousands of dollars into a game to FEEL like they're military geniuses.
      I left the guild and game shortly after, it just felt so pointless to keep going when my efforts could be voided by someone with a bigger wallet.

      Because these are 5m games, they are designed to be played in short bursts, most players are full F2P with then the usual marine life ecosystem up to the whales that are a small minority.
      They also have very little upkeep meaning they dont need "millions" of playing customers, 10k would be more that enough to turn a profit, this is why mobile is very profitable ... not because of "predatory practices" but because of large install base, relative low investment cost plus low upkeep costs.
      I will say this, he played the game *wrong* since he approached it like a typical single player game/MMO and these are not such games, these are mobile games were gameplay is designed to be short are the typical player will spend maybe a hour in 5-10 minutes play bursts and he even admitted it were he talked about how for the "casual" player the game is fine before approaching it like a hardcore gamer but these games are not intended to be played for hours at a end, as a mobile game this is kinda "sun is hot, water is wet" because it have a stamina system like about every mobile game in existence but he didnt say anything HOW does it work, if it recharges fast or slow, in order to actually talk about a mobile game you really cannot just "speedrun" to the end (for free), a lot of system issues will only became apparent when you are deep in the system.
      Yes, they will sell you the shortcut that makes the typical r/MMORPG user *rather upset* but this is a mobile game, not a MMO or a single player game, as much I enjoy his reviews .... well, he played the game *wrong*.

    It's mostly a reskin of a game called King of Avalon, although with some features that are expected of a modern phone game. They're designed to pump your levels and resources up extremely high for the first week. It wants you to get invested so you feel more comfortable spending money to speed the process up later.
    The thing these phone-games never tell you is that they're pvp focused, that gives them the big-spenders (cashcows being able to attack you and wound every unit you own so it takes millions of resources and days of healing to be able to use them again). It also lends to you feeling like you are falling behind and always at a disadvantage unless you spend money, and that feeling only grows larger the more you spend.
    I imagine these kind of games print money as they essentially produce nothing outside of a fleeting feeling of superiority for the wallet warrior boomers. I played one briefly out of boredom for a few weeks and it's honestly frightening just how large the time gates and resource pools become.

      Oh I also experienced that kind of exploitative mobile game years back. So long ago I've forgotten the name. But the basic premise was that you aquired and raised various monsters to battle along a "main quest" line. They levelled up by feeding them food. Food you had to grow yourself on the land tiles you could own. Each building and resource could be upgraded via several different ingame currencies and at first it was fun.
      But then you start running into battles you can't possibly win. The only way is to feed your monsters ever-growing amounts of food to level them up. But your farms only produced a small amount of food per real Earth day even with upgrades. It would have taken a week or more of clicking twice a day to level up one of several monsters. But of course there was a shop, a demo of which you were introduced to during the tutorial, in which you could buy premium currency to purchase food or rarer/stronger breeds of monster.
      I wasted perhaps around a tenner before I realised what was happening then uninstalled the game in absolute disgust. I haven't touched a mobile game since.

    Your opening clarification hits hard. There was a brief moment in time after they canned the former CEO who said that they were a miniatures company, not a game company where they looked like they were going to actually be a decent company. Started to move towards consumer friendly practices. The pricing was still rubbish, but they were taking steps in other ways to not be trash and started to win back customers that they lost to other games.
    Recently (within the past 5 years or so), they started to slip back into their old habits. It just so happened when they started to see constant growth (or at least stability) in their market share. Where other games started to make some missteps. The last straw was their view on video makers. I'm not buying their plastic crack anymore, and I'm not buying their books (I'm still going to read them though).

    You can still make a game that lets people pay for certain things gaining you an income AND include some damn gameplay, it's not that damn hard yet companies never do because they don't have to, people still "play" their game and spend money when it's as empty as a skeleton with osteoporosis.

    I remember the last time I tried to rekindle my enjoyment of 40k, went into my local store planning to drop £500 on models, paints, codex and new rule book. While I was looking through the stock the staff member came over and wouldn't stop bugging me with every question you listed ad nauseum. After about ten minutes I picked out my codex, models, paints etc and went to the till. The staff member proceeded to shit on the army (Tau, shut IT I like the design :-p ) and tried to convince me to buy the latest Space Marine release instead. After five minutes of my repeated refusal to change my mind and their constant pushing I just walked away from the till.
    I have continued to buy for others as a commission painter but I refuse to return to the hobby myself. When the staff members approach I tell them to walk away as I'm picking up for someone else and have a list.

      Was a horrible place to try and be part of the hobby. Sadly after I moved the closest GW is run by a gate-keeping vulture and our local third parties barely stock anything because of how controlling and overtly toxic the retail arm of GW has become (demanding at minimum a monthly stock order of £2000 from a small retailer who is lucky if he can shift £500 worth of plastic crack in a month)

      Sadly the 'push the latest space marine box' was probably a command from on high in the company. I've heard from ex-staffers that they're under orders to push space marines hard, especially now because GW are constantly releasing new Space Marine stuff so if they get you hooked on Space Marines you're more likely to buy more stuff. HOWEVER that doesn't excuse the shit sales tactics used by that staffer because you'd think that they'd be happy with you coming in and dropping large amounts of cash on anything.
      Whereas if you buy, say Tau (like you did) you'll probably buy it, maybe pick up some new models when the new Codex comes out and then you're done.

    • @DrFeelGoodHelpDesk
      @DrFeelGoodHelpDesk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@luketfer yea I've spoken to a few more conversational GW employees over the years who openly admit they are told they have to push the latest releases as much as possible and (in a couple of cases) have to hit a quota of sales on the new releases and Marine items or face being moved to a new store/let go.
      Odd this with the Tau is that it's not a "one a done" thing as you can always build up something epic with them (I've done a couple of 10k point armies for customers before, bloody insane numbers).
      The sales tactics are horrible no matter the reason but overall it's the desperate position they put their staff in that causes it. GW as a company are quite toxic to its customers and staff overall..from sales to the creatives themselves.

    I have some lore questions here:
    - When your battle barge is lost, where is this space dock thing coming from? Would it not make more sense for the upgrades to be repairs to the ship, X-Com 2 style?
    - Would misplacing a battle barge not be a mayor problem for any chapters? If I remember the Devastation of Ball correctly a first founding chapter like the Blood Angels have a total of two battel barges (OK in "Darkeness in the Blood" a third one is in construction but Dante is considering handing one of the old ones over to one of the successor chapters in turn)

    • @kormurg5971
      @kormurg5971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Your first question: it would make more sense that way, but it can also be due to any number of warp trickery. Time anomaly, warpstorm swallowing a space port, remanents of a forge world, STC,.... lore in 40k as Josh said is more of a guidline, with many deus-ex-machina moments

    • @kormurg5971
      @kormurg5971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As for your second question: it is. Not many forge worlds can produce space fairing vessels but there are entire companies and chapters MIA througout the Imperium in that way. A problem, sure.

    • @lostbutfreesoul
      @lostbutfreesoul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      1- Yes that would have been a better design choice, but likely has limitations on animation. However, they could have done the initial upgrades to the Battle Barge and then introduced an expansion of the fleet at a later point in the story line. Very likely that would have required more development time and they just jumped to that mid-point, and animated forward from there.
      2 - Perhaps it was also lost in time, so we now have two of them floating around or it is hundreds of years later and people just... dealt with the absence. One of the beautiful horrors about 40K is the paperwork, oh the Imperial Paperwork, so it is entirely possible no one back on Terra has even been notified of a problem. Would not be the first time the Warp has ate up a ship only for it to re-appear hundreds of years later and people to be like - huh, didn't even notice you where gone!
      Sort of remember it happening to a whole extermination fleet, in the case of Tau.

    • @Hattori75
      @Hattori75 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As to the second point, yes it would be a major problem, if they notice it. Since the warp is a screwey place, where space is made up and time doesn't matter, the barge can be taking slightly longer to come out on the end or it might be gone for 3000 years, and the people in the barge can feel the effects either way.

Then they tried to get me to buy an Adepta Sororitas Combat Patrol for $150 and a $60 Rhino Tank once I mentioned I was interested in buying a single Canoness for like $20. I just thanked them for the free gifts and left.
    I was just trying to learn how to paint a figure before I got into the hobby. I told them I was new and that I would try to paint the Ultramarine before committing to the hobby. I felt like they kind of cornered me into making a purchase, which I would have done on the Canoness if they weren’t so aggressive about getting me to spend 10x that amount on something I didn’t want. Agreed. All they saw was money content creators made through their own creativity and hard work and felt they were entitled to it. Ignoring the fact that there are people like me(and possibly you) that were drawn to the setting by those content creators rather than anything GW did themselves and it feels even more grimy. It is quite literally the "corporate greed" trope acted out in real time...

    I had the second most powerful clan on the game in our server, and i made it while being free to play, managing with diplomacy and the outstanding effort of the team, it took 3 whales and one lie from the 4th clan to fuck up everything, and the 1st clan to destroy the competition conveniently ignored the rules we all agreed on "server wide" the survivors merged with the 3rd best clan and we waged a mass crusade against the server that felt like the Horus heresy all over again crippling everything and letting it rot...
    The MFs paid their way out of the grave and restored most of the clans... And basically putting baby clans that are all allied with each other... So the server is a vegetable in a coma

    I always cry over Game Workshop's handling of Intellectual Property.
    While the 'carve it up and shot-gun it out' approach has some benefits, those are quickly lost if one does it over and over and over and over again. Game Workshop long past the point of too much a few years ago, in my opinion, and it has failed to capitalize on the successes that could have carried the company into the digital world. All of us here can picture at least one 'done right' computer series that quickly came to a sudden end because Game Workshop had no intention of follow through.
    But what do you expect when they constantly hide behind the defense of 'we just make models?'

      GW has basically two rules to the IP, They get a cut of the profits and any intellectual property you use needs to be funneled through GW so it represents something GW has already trademarked.
