    Hey everyone!
    One day I was looking at some players' stats and I stumbled across Kevin Gausman's profile. This took me down a confusing rabbit hole that I still kinda don't understand. Kevin Gausman's 2022 season has started in a historic way, but it's simultaneously very confusing.

    I'm an Oriole fan and it was just so frustrating watching such a talented guy struggle as much as he did for us. He'd look good and then throw a 5 or a 4.6 ERA season afterward. Always had nasty stuff, he went to another level with SF. It sucks watching these guys blow up when they leave, same thing with Arrieta.

      And Strop. And hellickson. And David Hernandez. And Dylan Bundy. And you could possibly make a Case for Koji Uehara and Alex Cobb, and for a few years there, fellow Oriole-Turned-Cub Jason Hammel. I don’t know if it’s rotten luck or they’re just lacking in the pitching development department, but man, they’ve missed so many times. Sad

    I was doing a bit of research on why the Giants' defense is the worst in MLB this year, especially with the defensive lineup not being too different from last year, and this video kinda explains it very well. The pitch selection from Gausman this year may be different but the philosophy is the same from when he was with the Giants: prevent barrels and produce low launch angles. Kinda seems like the kind of contact allowed that would result in this are balls that takes a lot of effort to field, especially with a velocity that allows balls to just land in no man's land. While yes this doesn't completely explain both the Giant's struggles on defense nor Gausman's season overall, I find the similarities between the two to not be a coincidence.

    Super glad someone made a video like this. It was surprising to me how it felt like every baseball fan went to bat for Carlos Rodon as an all-star snub while not Gausman got no attention (despite the two having very similar numbers). Also, I've watched probably 80% of Blue Jay games so far this year so I knew about the high babip, team shift rate etc., but the batted ball stuff you featured in this video was new to me and super interesting. It's really impressive in general how you always find stuff to talk about that feels both fresh and engaging. Easily one of the top 3 baseball content creators on YT

He’s great from the stretch & getting guys out when it matters most, at least in recent history, but he’s been balling since I started watching him in college at LSU. He’s always had great stuff. Regression to the mean will probably happen and things will become less extreme for Gausman (like the Blue Jays not using the shift anymore with him pitching, as an example). • @NighthawkScope
    @NighthawkScope ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting video. Seems to me like the shift along with Gausman using two pitches that drop (split and change) allow him to both induce less than solid contact while finding holes through the infield. In addition, the split and change keep HR and fly balls low which contributes to his ability to leave runners on base when they do get on. Idk, those numbers are really interesting though.

    Do you think this could be due to batting approach? Would be interesting to look at count breakouts. With only two pitches that are thrown relatively hard, maybe it's easier to flare the ball or just slap it up the middle or the opposite field.

  • @Keevo39
    @Keevo39 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd imagine it also has to do a lot with his pitching approach. He's probably ok with giving up singles, as a team would usually need 3 in one inning to score a run. The low walk rate may also contribute to batters knowing they can swing more freely on pitchers counts, leading to increased flare hits.
