    Some interesting background to "why" it is labeled the way it is. I was the manager of a California tackle retailer back just before this line was released in the 1980's, and the Berkley people surveyed a number of such fishing tackle industry members about their upcoming new line [the name had not yet been chosen]. The question was: Should the new line be labeled close to the the exact breaking strength, which could then be marketed as "extremely thin"? "OR" should it be marketed using the standard line diameters of the day, and be marketed as "extremely strong", but with the same diameter as other lines? Overwhelmingly, the tackle dealers said that the line should be kept at the "standard" diameters, which would allow the [accurate] claim of being extremely strong.

      That's really interesting! One hypothesis I can think of why the public want the diameter to be the standardized parameter is that the diameter predicts how long you can spool, which is the actual consideration of both fishermen and retailers; while the breaking strength is a parameter no body really wants to test in field, as long as it is at least the labeled one.

    This line overall seems very consistent often breaking right at the estimate. Understated label, but consistently understated. Thanks!

      it's also one of the thicker lines, so strength to diameter might not be so far off.

    Thanks for doing the tests. Good to know their actual break strength. Now I feel more comfortable using lighter lines. I prefer mono over braids.

    Love you videos man! keep it up. I wish you include the measured mm diameter in the video and description because in my opinion, measured diameter vs breaking strength is the actual measurement of which line brand is the strongest; and I say measured mm diameter because some brands lie about the diameter too :)

    So glad I found this. I got my dad some 15# sunline mono to try instead of his usual 15# big game. I got cussed out good for him breaking fish off and loosing some good baits with it, LOL. Apparently, he was using 22# line the whole time before. Explains a lot.

      Exactly what I thought. I primarily use Berkeley Big Game; 12lb & 15lb. I got some 20lb for big swim baits, but I don’t think I need it after watching this. I’m not fishing around thick heavy cover. I fish for largemouth bass. I believe 15lb is sufficient. Good luck Dan. 👍🏼🎣😎

    The breakpoint is interesting but what I found the most interesting is the stretch of the line. For my own use, I found the J-Braid line worked best for me. I am able to use it for both bigger fish like the lingcod and for crab snaring. I do use the mono for all my freshwater fishing.

    I tried Berkly Big Game Braided line in 20 lb test. I couldn't get it to load test and lift even 15lbs. I used a 20 and 15lb. weight to test it. I lifted it up slowly and carefully also. The line did not break at the knot. The knot didn't slip either.

    Doesn't it come down to Line Diameter? You can get the XT which is just bigger diameter line vs XL.

  • @mcaetano2000
    @mcaetano2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's why I always compare line by diameter, not lb test! In Europe (I live in Portugal) most people compare line by diameter. If I use one line of a given diameter, if I'm going to buy a line of another brand I choose a line of the same diameter, not the same lb test. Lb test may mean nothing... The companies put what they want as lb test. What I look for is diameter and if I have that information I'll look to the actual breaking strength when comparing lines. With that said, Trilene Big Game is my favorite line for everything. I've always used 15lb test for swimbaits, even 8" Hudds, because I knew the diameter was almost the same as some 20lb line from other brands and it felt really stronger than most 15lb lines.... Never had a break... 15lb test Big Game has a diameter just over the diameter of 17lb Seaguar AbrazX Fluorocarbon but actually breaks at 23lb.
