I was recently visiting my family in Pasadena, CA and every night, I'd hear the hooting of a great horned owl in one of the nearby trees. They really are magnificent birds.

Yes, my home backs up to a line of trees w/a field on the opposite side & in Autumn & Winter, two great horned owls will FREQUENTLY wake me up w/their hooting around 4:00 am (+ or -) & I can easily see their silhouettes in the highest branches of the trees. Guessing they’re looking for field mice that frequent that field & we have lots of squirrels around too. Their hooting sounds SO cool though my two cats get pretty scared.🤣

Fun fact is that their legs are actually longer. So technically the owls legs are hidden underneath it's feathers. They have long legs and they sit squatting

I live in Hoover, AL near Birmingham and we have woods in the backyard and at the side of our house. I’ve seen owls, hawks and deer in our woods. I also saw some other bird out back that was big and had a huge wingspan. I couldn’t tell what kind of bird it was though. Saw it only once, but that was enough for me to remember it always.

We had a owl fall down our chimney. We had to call game and fish to come get it out. He had an attachment that fit on our pool cleaning pole. Fished him out the top, brought him in the kitchen and tagged it.
    Awesome bird.

I think I have two mated pairs on my land. I hear them at two places opposite each other at night. I use no pesticides on my orchards, so my land is healthy for owls and other critters here in Tallapoosa County. The Great Horned owl is a fascinating creature to watch and hear.

I have a large forearm tattoo peice of a great horned owl. Growing up in South AL, I remember 1 particular great horned owl that stayed in the pine trees near the edge of our back yard. It felt like he/she came to this particular spot every night for years. He/she was not bothered by us at all and hooted at us quite a bit. Love these birds so much.

Fantastic vid. Just got the notion to look these guys up after hearing the species name mentioned for the first time in awhile and I'm hit w this super informative, to the point vid with such good visuals and camera work. Plus you're pretty close to Georgia where I've always lived and these guys indeed are often heard around here, an unmistakable element of the Southern ecosystem and one of my favorite animals.

I had one of these, even bigger in my pine tree in my backyard during the day in Long Island suburbs. I noticed after a half hour of sitting outside. Meanwhile, squirrels and birds were below eating, not knowing a death machine was like 30 feet above them. When it finally flew away, it’s wingspan had to be at least 4-5 ft. Thing was enormous. Unfortunately I never seen it sgain

We heard one this morning at 5:00am outside our window in the Sonoran Az desert 😮. I’ve never heard one in this part of Az! We have Burrow Owls, which are much smaller and don’t have these vocalizations. I know great horned owls are fairly common all across N. America but just surprised to hear one here 🦉❤

I live in the southern most part of Illinois. These owls are amazing and use to be everywhere in my neighborhood (had to guard my puppies years back). I met a man that had one. Not as a pet. The owl was more of a tamed visitor. One evening at sunset, he put on a leather gauntlet, extended his arm and this amazingly awesome great horned owl landed on his arm. The thing just wanted to chill with us for like 10 mins and then flew off. It was both beautiful and freaking scary at the same time. I asked him if it was his pet, he said owls are not pets. He said he was lucky to befriend one when it was young and it would visit him every day after work. I love that idea. That is how it should be. I haven't kept up with the guy so I don't know if the owl is long deceased, but I would love to have a visitor like that in my life. Not a pet, just a friend that hangs out from time to time.

    • @liamodell7191

By the way... Since our owl population has went down, we've had an over abundance of skunks. We need these owls back.

At a lot of people are saying owls cannot be pets, we already know this, but because owls are known to imprint very easily when they're young, it's hard to not keep them as pets because they see you as the parent, all people should do their research on imprinting.

@5:47, what is that chirping sound she's making? A few summers ago, I ran into a Great Horned owl a lot, and it would make a more aggressive version of that sound if I passed under a streetlight it was perched on. (It would also violently kick off the top of it, and the whole thing would shake as it flew off)
