The problem is gasoline is a readily available source of energy. You just have to drill it out. But free hydrogen molecule isn't available in large quantities naturally. You actually have to spend energy to separate it from compounds. It'll get expensive once scaled. You can say the same thing for EV batteries, that we have to charge ourselves, but charging efficiency for Li-ion batteries is around 90%. Hydrogen extraction efficiency ranges from 30-40% if you're dissociating water.
However, since Hydrogen is so light compared to Li-ion batteries, I think it makes up for its inefficient extraction because it costs less fuel to carry hydrogen than heavy Li-ion batteries.

    • @exterminator4808

But the question is "Why?!" Why use hydrogen when you already have BEVs? It's like taking the very longer route in going from point A to point B just because you can!
Let's take into consideration the best case scenario for hydrogen: it's produced by electrolysis of water using electricity from solar, wind, hydroelectric and nuclear sources i.e. it's 🟢 hydrogen. Even though it's a carbon neutral process, you have to consume energy just to make energy which is non-sensical. This energy can simply be sent into the grid and it can power EVs at homes or at EV charging stations just like that! Instead, we have to purify water to electrolyse it and build a whole new bunch of different infrastructures like electrolysers, supply chains, safety systems, dispensing stations etc. All this costs a lot of time and money to build and maintain, something that is not true for BEVs since we already have a grid in place which is 70% of the job done! Then imagine the inferno that would be caused if there was a leak. Petrol at least needs a flame to ignite, hydrogen does so just by coming in contact with the oxygen of air! Thus hydrogen is more hazardous than fossil fuels. And finally, researchers have said that large scale leaks of hydrogen can also potentially act as a greenhouse gas.
So you would have to be total muppets to use hydrogen instead of electricity for EVs.

The membrane or the fuelcell stacks that exchanges hydrogen to electrical energy are troublesome and must be replaced with other components once a year or every 6 months. The membrane is like what you usually see in the RO water filter, except larger depending on the design it can be a rectangle or cylinder with built in heat exchange or cooler.
It's very expensive, $10,000 or more to replace it a long with other components.
The car works like a hybrid car, battery and all. The coolant to cool the membrane or the fuelcell is another issue to worry about. The membrane only lasts about 6 months to a year, depending on how the car is used. If you park the car for a very long time like a month or so, the system will clog up. Then the membrane and cooling components have to be replaced before you can use the car. The car has to be towed into the shop autorized dealer.
So far, there are NO mechanics at the dealer that can work on the cars, due to its complicated system. You must wait for a trained scientist mechanic from Toyota Japan to fly in for your service on an electrical problem.

Very concise video and well done, but at 1:56 is a bad graphic. You're showing an ICE H2 engine, not a fuel cell. ICE H2 engines require more like 10+ times the energy as BEVs. And regarding 3 times for fuel cells, that's best case at the moment where as the H2 is delivered via pipeline. If you have to truck it compressed, or worse liquefy it, it's more like 4 times the energy per mile. It's an OK technology to fit where other technologies can't meet the specific requirements.

Yeah but ICE gives people real cars not some appliance like experience with electric drive + Fuel cell cars still need lithium batteries and more raw minerals, mining etc that burning hydrogen in an ICE doesn't need.
I get the inefficiency vs fuel cell but if we had a lot more nuclear this wouldn't matter and we have cars that are much simpler than even the current ICE cars with all their emissions control systems.

    • @scottkolaya2110
      @scottkolaya2110 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@o00scorpion00o The reality is you'd need to get hydrogen down from $36/kg to less than $5/kg for H2 ICE to go anywhere. That requires getting electricity to less than 3¢/kWh. Since nuclear plants generally cost about 6¢/kWh to produce electricity, let alone sell it for a profit, nuclear isn't likely going to solve any issues no matter how many get built. Maybe if we run out of crude and the price skyrockets so that gasoline is over $10/gal, that might change things. But in the meantime, more and more people love the quietness of BEVs and can't believe they used to like driving ICE cars.

    • @o00scorpion00o

@@scottkolaya2110 I drove BEV for 10 years, I live in Ireland so it's a Small Island, it was a novelty in the beginning but the issues remain, long charge times and much less range despite my last EV being an 82 Kwh id3 with 77 Kwh usable.
The car weighted 2 tonne for a small hatch which was ridiculous, it dulled the driving experience something awful. Getting rid of EV with depreciation and dealers not wanting EV as trade in is a real hassle so I gave it back to the finance company. Not into all this tech , screens and all other nonsense.
Now I drive a petrol manual car with minimal tech and I love it, I missed the engagement of driving a manual ICE and the much better handling of a much lighter car.
There are many people with no home charging and won't be willing to spend endless hrs at public charging.
I think you underestimate the energy Nuclear energy can provide and it can produce a lot of clean electricity and hydrogen.
There is really no other alternative to liquid fuels, BEV will never replace liquid fuels and it will never be environmentally friendly to produce batteries.

The tank to hold super cooled liquid hydrogen must 100% fool proof in terms of leaks and in terms of surviving an accident. Why is this important? A pin point leak in a liquid hydrogen tank will create an explosion so great that there won't be a piece of the car or it's passengers left that is larger than the size of a thimble. It will take only one accident to occur like this and the hydrogen powered car idea will come to a screeching halt. Sorry...it's true!

My question is why does the hydrogen need to be in a liquid form? Could we not make an engine that can run off of hydrogen gas? Then all you'd need is water and a safe way to split the hydrogen from the oxygen. Hell, it could have a reclaim system for the exhaust (which is just water, the system would take the water from buring the hydrogen and feed it back into the water tank)
That being said, there's probably either some kinda problem with this idea that doesnt have a solution or big corporate companys have explored this idea and came to the conclusion that pumping straight liquid hydrogen into a car rather than the idea I have at the top of the comment makes way more money for them

If millions of vehicles were burning Hydrogen and creating only water, I presume this water goes somewhere! and is ejected outside of all of these vehicles creating wet slippery roads, condensation, and then clouds which will then cause a change in the atmosphere, resulting in rain, floods, and storms, it doesn't seem a good idea to me.

A drawback that first came to me is if you had 1000s of these in a cold environment, would they expell large amounts of water on the road requiring salt trucks to be continuously dumping on the highway.

Not soon! H2 produced from electricity thats already 30% electricity lost. Than, fuel cell efficiency is at least 20% less than electric motor. So you lost already 50% electricity which can be used in EV. On the top of that fuel-cell car needs to vent H2 at all time when packed in the garage with temp above -250C ( thats everywhere on Earth). Than building fueling station and building car itself is 10 or 2 times more expensive than EV, accordingly. NONSENSE idea for passenger vehicles. Ships, big trucks - perhaps.

There are kits now to do that now. They use electrolysis to make the H2 and have compressors to pump it up to the required pressure. Unfortunately, they are very expensive because of the rare materials, but even if the electrolyzer was free, it still would be 4x more expensive to drive per mile than just putting that same electricity straight into a BEV and no water needed.

Hydrogen is the fuel of the future as it can be burned just as gasoline is burned in an internal combustion engine thus no need for a hydrogen fuel cell as an ICE engine doesn't care where it gets it's hydrogen from. Right now new technologies have the electrolysis process up to 98% efficient for the production of hydrogen from water and just like EV's have home charging so too can hydrogen giving the owner true freedom to travel within the limits of the vehicles range just like an EV vehicle does. That's right produce all the hydrogen you need right in the comfort of your own home.
If done correctly hydrogen ICE engines will actually clean the air as they are operated thus are better for the environment than EV's. Then there's the high cost of replacing a battery and the fact that there simply isn't enough of those rare materials to go around in trying to replace over 1.3 billion vehicles on the roadways world wide. I bet the first Tesla owner to need to have their battery replaced found out the hard way that all that they saved in fuel cost should have been saved to buy a replacement battery at a cost of roughly $23k USD.
