If I had to choose one of the three, I'd take the 5.7L Power Wagon as well. Last year, I was looking for a truck and wanted a Toyota Tundra but I couldn't find one within my price range. Another truck I was considering was a Ford SVT Raptor but again couldn't find one one for the right price.
I ended up with a 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500hd Vortec. I could of went for the 1500 but those have active fuel management and I've heard that those engines can get oil sludge buildup and lifter failure. The Silverado 2500hd gasser I bought doesn't have active fuel management and despite the heavier weight and putting bigger tires on it, I still average 11-13mpg in it. It’s sad that Navistar intentionally under engineered the 6.4 for Ford. They were being sued by Ford at the time for the problems that they were having with the 6.0 trying to get Navistar to pay for all of the warranty replacements that Ford was having on them. Navistar obviously didn’t want to pay due to the high costs, and didn’t have the budget (nor motivation) when designing the 6.4, due to the litigation costs. Hence they split ways after the 6.4 and Ford designed the 6.7 in house

    • @backroadseeker08

That's a rather single sided version of the story. Ford rushed the 6.0 to market with the 7.3 being phased out due to emissions, and was at the design table for both engines. Neither were simply Navistar engines that Ford just chucked into their trucks.

Ford screwed up both the 6.0 and 6.4. Both of the engines were designed for what was originally intended and proven to work well with not nearly the issues they had in the Fords compared to the International versions. The VT365 and Maxxforce 7 were not known for the failures. As stated, the issues were caused by ford rushing or trying to change designs too rapidly when the product was already being pushed out. It wasn’t International’s fault, it was Ford’s.

And I've seen even more gains using the exact same cam specs, with upgraded springs and valve relieved pistons. As for the I6, yes they lost to cylinders, but in the best way. The Power Wagon was the top full size off-road truck, with the Raptor close behind. (Depending on what you do off-road the order could be switched.) now there’s the Silverado ZR2 (less $ than the GMC AT4X) that’s the best. You can drive the ZR2 reasonably fast AND rock crawl with BOTH front & rear lockers!! It’s lighter, better fuel economy, (especially the diesel version) and similar or less $$!! You can get the Tradesman version of the Power Wagon if you don’t mind giving up a lot of features (it’s still very loaded up with features mind you) for about $6,000 less Canadian. That’s a truck I really like. Ram also has upped the payload towing capabilities so it’s a better option in both if those aspects now. The Power Wagon is HEAVY though,,,,.

Again, my opinion, Ram had an excellent opportunity to make significant improvements with the 6.4 and chose mediocre performance gains and to retain similar reliability issues. I’ve owned several Ram (Cummins) trucks over the past 25 years & they’ve been pretty good. HD trucks usually have lower restrictions on emissions and don’t factor into CAFE standards. So, if they could swing stuffing a 700+ hp Hellcat engine in just about every class of vehicle that did have to meet those requirements, you’d think they could’ve done better than the 410 hp 6.4 Hemi with questionable lifters & cam for the past 10 years.

The 6.4 Powerstroke was the result of the horse power and torque wars.
Navastar designed for around 375 horse power, which was less than the Duramax 6.6. Ford got involved after Navastar wouldn't turn up the screw (not a real screw but tuning) to make more power.
Ford programed the ECU for more power and the result was a grenade with the pin pulled waiting to go boom.
The F350 at auction with the bald tires, says at a minimum of $2500 in front end parts,(springs, shocks, front diff, bearings, brakes) and quite possibly a transmission, as plowing snow commercially will beat every nut and bolt lose and trash the front end.
