About to close on my first home and it was pointed out the roof is 30 years old. I have roofed a home like this before, but that was a while ago, so this is a great refresher.
Age doesn't matter, failure of the shingles does, if it looks good leave it, you can color and seal an old roof
Good job for DIY.
Few tips (for the general public) that I'm sure you've gotten a million times already: Never nail through your wall flashing. It's meant to float as the house expands and contracts and that provides a leak proof junction. Also, it's a good ideal to nail a couple of inches away from them.
When you countersink a nail by mistake, cover it with a little flashing cement (aka trowel grade tar) and nail next to it.
Above the center of every tab at the top of the shingle is a little reference cut. When installing shingles against a wall, flip it so that it's face down, line up the end of the shingle with the cut in the center of the farthest tab out from the wall, cut from there down and when you insert the shingle, it'll be perfectly spaced at 6" every time and it'll make up for the imperfections in squareness that every house has after having settled at the wall. You'll be starting off with a perfectly spaced course and that sets you up for the rest of the job.
Try to leave a quarter of an inch from the wall with the shingle if you're shingling in cold weather. In warm weather, they'll expand and buckle if they're butt right up to the wall. In the summer, you can butt them up and they'll contract when it gets cold.
Cut on the back side of the shingles. The granules wear out blades excessively fast. By cutting on the back side, not only will you use far less blades, but it's a lot easier to control the cut (meaning more accuracy) and a lot less work on you forearm (less fatigue).
For your starters (the inverted ones), cut off the tabs. There'll less of a bump when you lay your first course/row down.
But again, great job on an easy roof.

Hey could be worse, you could be a handyman who won't touch roofing jobs! As I found out the hard way recently trying to get a small roof patch job done. And you make
better money roofing, anyway. I imagine. They won't touch it due to licensing, insurance and legal issues, etc. Then later it turned out my landlord had to have the fore roof
redone anyway, because some storm damage had caused a leak, but the roof was shot, and shredded, so you couldn't even patch or repair it. Replacement only.
Thank God I'm not paying for it, at least!

Flashing should always be replaced when putting on new shingles
Unless they look in "new" condition
Those may have been
Should not put a nail under step flashing
Water will be directed to that nail
The nail will corrode leaving a hole for water leaks

Just got into roof sales, which I hate that term because I rather would be called a roof serviceman, consultant, advocate. Because I really do care about the safety and well being of a homeowners roof. But thanks for posting bc now I have an idea what all it takes and all that is needed to replace the roof, so that now I am more educated in this field which I think is very important for every roofing consultant/sales person to know. It’s actually not that hard. Good job by the way, your a great son, and you helped your parents with the fraction of the cost, as well as helped them not claiming their insurance. I just hope that you are licensed to do that because here in Florida you can not install a roof your self unless you are a licensed roof replacement contractor. But good job buddy overall very good video, explanation, and job.

Moss can act a little like thatch. I made the mistake of removing old-growth moss in the autumn instead of re-roofing in the summer. Created big-time leaks all winter.

Professionals actually advise not to use 2 regular shingles, one on top of the other, for your first layer. There are specific starter shingles that actually adhere to the underside of the regular shingles and to the roof. So that way your edges dont get blown off in high winds. Too late now obviously but for the next time you have to do it lol.

Before I correct what you did wrong here, I would like to say I like watching you work and some other jobs you did, like #8, are very nice. Now then; I would suggest using plastic caps for felt instead of staples because it provides a better water barrier and it's much easier to remove if you ever have to redo your roof again. Your shingle pattern was completely wrong, if you read the wrapping, it says to stagger it so the lines on the tabs don't line up so it doesn't make a water line in your roof. It should look like stairs but shouldn't line up on every other shingle, it should be every 4th. The way you did this actually voids the warranty of some shingle manufacturers.
Delerium682 I know this is old but if you are worried about staples, you are about to put nails everywhere into the felt when you add the shingles.... staples are fine.

Hi, BYOT. Why did you start the first row of shingles about a foot from the bottom edge of the roof?? 4:23
you5711 its metal there it acts like a gutter the water goes down where that screen is.
Youre suppose to put 6 nails per shingle, as stated on the shingle packaging, because if you dont and theres a storm and shingles blow off and the shingle company sees you didnt put the correct number of nails in the warranty is void! AND YOU ARENT PUTTING THE NAILS WHERE THEY GO, AND THEY GO IN THE TAR STRIP! One nail on each end in the tar strip, and one nail on each side of the slit, which there are two slits, equals 4 nails, plus the two on the ends equals 6 total. You also did your starter shingles wrong! The only way it worked for you to start tearing off from the bottom is because there was only one layer of shingles, and they were barely fastened to the roof. Youre also suppose to PULL the nails on the sheathing, not pound them in because they will push back up creating a leak. You pound the nails when there are only batter boards, then cover with sheathing and nail them. Potato forks are the best tear off tool there is!
Thank you for this video, I live in Canada and I have to do my roof again after 18 years. The contractor was using the IKO shingles on my roof and I was told that the product has 25 years of warranty, however, the shingles on the sunny side started to fall apart already after 18 years. I have contacted IKO and they are offering me the warranty reimbursement ONLY if I use their shingles again. My question is what is the normal lifespan for the shingles in general? How good these IKO shingles in comparison to the other brands?
Thanks so much for watching and good questions. In all honesty I don’t have extensive experience with shingles but a 25 year warranty seems to be the minimum. Some have lifetime warranties but I don’t know how they can make that claim when they obviously won’t last forever. I would look at product reviews and see which ones are better. That’s what I generally do when I don’t have a tremendous amount of knowledge about a product first. Sour I’m not more help but thanks so much for watching.
Also metal, concrete, clay, or slate tile shingles which are more expensive but pretty much last 50 years plus of life.
What kind of roof is this? Wouldn't this cause the water to leak from between the shingles and metal edge? How are you preventing that?
What about the ice and water shield?

Depends on how big your roof is and how much you want to save some money. This was a very small section of roof that took me all day long to do. Just know its hard work (on the body) and HOT work, but you can save a tremendous amount of money doing it yourself. Thanks for watching Trent and hope you enjoyed the video.

Hi Ducati. When do I nail through the flashing in this video? I don't see that when I watch it? Are you taking about the flashing that is directly attached to the siding of the house. In any case as long as the shingles are overlapping the nail penetrations you should be just fine. Thanks for watching.
You have nail heads within inches of your waterline, directly by the wall.. you gotta know when to nail high on edges & walls or you get exposed nail heads or nails too close to your waterline. Might not leak immediately but eventual it will
Nice video. However, the title is misleading. This is not a re-roof. This is a tear-off; and, installation of a new roof. A "re-roof", in the trade jargon, is simply shingling over an existing roof without tearing off the old shingles.

@@John-Anderson replacing plywood is actually super difficult. It’s hard to tear off, mainly because you use screws and not nails. I had to tear out the plywood on a deck about 12x15 feet and it sucked. Over half the screws had been stripped by the weather enough in 7 years that I couldn’t get them out. I had to get a sawzall and just cut it all out. Took me two days just to get the plywood out. Then about 45 minutes to put plywood back on 😂
@@Smoke--- yeah but who ever did you roof was an idiot i know they use nails on most houses and they wont strip and you can take then right out slap a piece of plywood down and nail in down . Done. THATS a new roof.
@@John-Anderson only if the plywood really needs replacing and like I said this was a deck. It didn’t have protection from the weather and wind and such. So they used screws to hold it tighter. I’m the one that built the deck though so it is very possible that I did the wrong thing. But, in my experience, even when plywood is put in with nails it’s still a pain to replace.
Did you put 1 layer or 2 layers of shingles? I couldn't tell in the beginning

Thanks for watching Charles. The whole project took me a day to do once I had all of my materials ready to go. I'd say about 8 to 10 hours. Labor is very expensive here in Seattle and for a project this size no contractor would do it for less then $4,000 I would imagine. So I saved the parents at least $3,000 in labor alone since I did this for free. They deserve it though haha. Thanks for the support.

You definitely lucked out on that step flashing in that it lined up with your new shingles. Otherwise you'd have to remove the lower part of your siding and put new step flashing in.

Best way to avoid leaks you don’t put staple so low in the paper. You should not staple.
You should put roofing nails in. Only on the 15 inches of the paper🤷♂️
Best way. Don't use staples. Use cap nails. They hold the felt better. Why would you put coil nails into the felt. I get it if your in a rush with nothing else.
How many bundles of shingles did this take?
Good question Nicholas. Each bundle is about 33sf and this roof was approximately 6'x20' so I purchased 4 bundles. Thanks for watching and hope the video helped.

Florida, everyone is reroofing at 10yrs due to insurance. What is the average southern life span of a shingle roof?
Why put a nail into the flashing? Should not the building facing shingles be under that layer? If you put a nail through flashing now water can penetrate no? - Just learning roofing
In most circumstances I would agree with you Ettrick but as long as the shingles are properly overlapping and coving all nail penetrations then moisture should not be an issue. Thanks for watching and the discussion.

I would never call myself a roofer but with my experience my main suggestion is to Stay hydrated. When the sun is beaming down on you and there is no shade to be had then you can become dehydrated surprisingly quickly. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.
