"As a boy, I chose safety, as a man I choose suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then, that's the deal." What an amazing unforgettable movie. So glad to have found it.
"Pain is a part of happiness." When I lost my son in 2014, as a mother, the pain choked me I can't think of anything in order to ease it. It' s unusual for me to think that my child got ahead of me that I am here and he's not. That I am living and he's not. Ten years after his passing , the pain is still the same. But I think there's no expiry date for grieving. I missed you so much my son, till we meet again. Thank you for this very moving movie.
I hope by god himself, he alone heal your pain and know in your heart he is with god and better place and has no pain and sorrow and full of joy .❤❤❤❤❤❤

It truly is. Unforgettable. The profundity that speaks to the human condition, to all humankind once the heart has been completely cracked open & vulnerable ready to receive the glorious rays if the Divine kindling flickering flames then dying embers
Everybody is hopeless without Jesus, at the end of life is hell without Jesus is heaven and hell Jesus is the only way says in the Bible, CS Lewis taught Same thing the Bible says

Remains of the Day was a beautiful movie also. Anthony Hopkins starred in that movie too. May God's love comfort you in your story of life. It makes me feel sad to hear that you are old, I'm starting to get older. Life is difficult, but love wins in the end.

Just a word in for the brother. What a man he was. What a wise and kind and serving heart. A noble man with a humble heart and eyes to see beyond the obvious.
I remember going to see this movie at the theatre in Portland, Oregon. When leaving afterward I experienced a great phenomenon -- every man who was also walking out of it was crying, or obviously had been crying. From young twenty-somethings up through senior citizens. Some were hiding their faces so no one would notice, but others weren't so worried about blowing their noses or wiping their tears in public. It was amazing. Have never experienced that again.
I myself "lost it" as tears were rolling down my cheeks making my shirt soaking wet. I wept more than I thought was possible. I would have been one of the "men" you mentioned above, had I been at the same theatre viewing this movie. Human Life is so precious. I was the same way when I lost my Mother.

And I wouldn’t trade him or these tears for the world. “The pain now is a part of the happiness then”. Love is that powerful.
Shadowlands is a 1993 British biographical drama film about the relationship between academic C. S. Lewis (played by Anthony Hopkins) and Jewish American poet Joy Davidman (played by Debra Winger), her death from cancer, and how this challenged his Christianity. It was directed by Richard Attenborough with a screenplay by William Nicholson based on his 1985 television film and 1989 stage play of the same name. The 1985 script began life as I Call It Joy written for Thames Television by Brian Sibley and Norman Stone. Sibley later wrote the book, Shadowlands: The True Story of C. S. Lewis and Joy Davidman. My mom, who died at home in my care at 82, of alzheimers, said when she could still talk, i don't want to die. I died a little bit inside when she said that. I said, I don't want you to die. It still kills me when I remember her saying that. It's been four and a half years and i miss her every day.😢❤😢
It was the same with my darling husband. He so badly wanted to live longer. He was only 69 and he died due to the fact that I wasn't allowed to be with him at the hospital, due to Covid restrictions. They didn't know how to care for him. He died from hospital acquired pneumonia. He was making such an amazing progress but from time to time he needed to be hospitalised. I had to provide the most vital everyday care, as nurses did not know how to do it. It's four years now and I cannot recover from the bad memories of everything what had happened to him, and I'd choose to join him right now if I could, as life without him is a never ending nightmare. I know what you must be going through. ❤
I don't believe anyone or anything wants to die but nature is in control and the quality of life is what I think is most important. I often think of dying, as I am in the winter of my life and don't believe I would wish to suffer or be so crippled that I could not function. Not having someone to care for me is another problem I must face when weighing quality of life. I believe there is a part of your mother that knows you were there for her to help her, comfort her and assist her during her final moments here. I believe Love never dies, ever, and I believe you will meet again.
This was the first movie my ex husband and I watched February 14 th 1994 at a theater together. We both got remarried and now he’s on his deathbed. Brings back many memories 😢
Got to bed, saw this..11pm...now a total mess, snot, tears and pain...I lost my 12yr old son and theres no pain like losing a child.....I wish I could love again but it's all gone...it's living but not living...it's waiting until the pain stops with.my.last breath....I hope they.are together in Heaven ❤❤❤
I saw the iitalian version of this film perhaps 30 years ago together with my husband who passed away 9 years ago. I remember then we were both in tears at the end of the film. Today I viewed this English versions and I can feel that he's here with me ❤❤❤
I"m more than pleasantly surprised. This movie is beautifully written, exquisitely acted and brought tears to my eyes several times and for several reasons.
I married to help someone but we both agreed after that we could not have done it had we not really wanted to marry, til death do us part. It is something else. This film manages to get to that place. Very moving. Wonderful acting by all key actors. Certainly cleared out the tear ducts!
I love this movie. Suffering, love all part of the human experience. And also divine. Christs love for us and the extreme suffering He went through because of love for us
A heart achingly beautiful story brought to life by Anthony Hopkins cast as the stiff-upper-lip academic/writer and Debra Winger as the American mother abroad with her son. Together with the fact that it’s based on true events in CS Lewis’ life, it makes fpr a love story of a whole different caliber than the norm. Highly recommended! Thank you for sharing it.
❤ "Love and pain are intertwined, for in losing someone we cherish, we not only feel the depths of our grief but also learn the profound lessons that loss imparts. Through the suffering, we realize that love is eternal, and though the heart aches, it is in that very ache we discover the strength to endure, the wisdom to heal, and the courage to carry the memory of that love forward."❤ What a brilliant performance from Anthony Hopkins, Debra Winger and Edward Hardwicke
How I found this film was in true alignment with what I was meant to see. I had decided a short while back when I first discovered c.s. lewis that he was too academically dry for my interest. I was seeking spiritual leaders, pastors etc. Even just recently it came to my mind to look into him again but I decided not to. Then I come across this film. Seems to be what God had intended. I loved this movie and the moving story behind it. I like a bold woman and she wore him down in a nice way. Love is so strange.
When my husband and i were dating I introduced him to this film. I grew up watching it and it always makes me feel such deep appreciation for not only this man’s life but for what I have in my own life.
I lost my mother as a child, and I lost my wife to cancer. She too was much younger than me and I felt that I should have gone instead of her - she had so much more to live and to give. This film just tore my soul apart. But it was a catharsis that needed to happen... Survivor's guilt is a massive burden...
He`s an excellent actor that I cried and felt the sorrow of that situapaion. My husband died of Cancer , it was very painful for me and sons. Thanks for passing this marvelous film.
One of the purist portrayals of love between people is the love between Jack and his brother, who always stood by him, critisized and guided him when it was necessary. This love and loyalty from his brother impressed me more than love between him and Joy as it was so unconditional and without any jealousy from him as Jack got more attention than he did.
Truly beautiful and superb acting. Anthony Hopkins so very underrated- and in this his brother Warnie - the type of family household we had in my day - where brothers or sisters who did not marry lived a lifelong friendship/kinship you rarely see today.
“Christopher are you just trying to be offensive or just merely stupid” so glad Jack found Joy. As awkward a human as she was they had something. Evan more glad he had his brother a truly beautiful and authentic relationship that few achieved. ❤❤❤ Such fine brothers Jack and Warnie looking after Douglas, remembering losing their own mother at similar age. Such a fine story portrayed - sheer cinematic art. ❤

WOW . Now, that's a REAL movie. I feel very lucky to have stumbled upon it. I am a huge fan of Sir Anthony, and of Professor Lewis. I've seen most of HIS movies, and read most of HIS books. I also watched both of my parents die of cancer. I love what they call "action" movies. But, they are mostly comedy. This is real drama.
My grandfather’s cousin Whitney Meredith Thompson Ph D knew CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien. He became a closer friend to the Tolkien family - but he told me of their roadster trips in the English country side along with various others when they were at Oxford. I adore films about these two men!
Yes, I agree whole-heartedly, that this was a very powerful movie. Got right down to the very core of one's feelings -- only in some they are very difficult to dredge up and share with someone you really love and adore. Anthony Hopkins was the very best there is for this role -- and Deborah Winger was no slouch either!! An excellent way to pass an afternoon -- watching something of such substance. Movies like this leave you in thought, wiping away our tears, and learning a valuable lesson.
What a pleasure and life gift to have the opportunity of watching this movie. To learn of the life of the author of Chronicles of Narnia. And the blessing of seeing the wonderful acting of one of the greatest actors of our time Sir Anthony Hopkins. Simply superb !!! Thanks for sharing this great movie.
Omg. Hopkins is a legend. I thought I'd seen all his best films. I apparently had not. TY Paul Ross for sharing this Extraordinary Film. I refuse to be one of those people who says too much with out b/c most of those reading comments R doing so to see if it is worth the time. What a WONDERFUL Gem of a Movie. Stellar Performance by Anthony Hopkins and really great job by actors, writers and directors in this Must See Movie. I loved it!
I watched Shadowlands last evening. Incredible story about an awesome man, C.S. Lewis. What a complex, beautiful human being! Flawed, grappling with many of life’s deepest issues of the heart, C.S. “Jack” Lewis is a study in human spiritual growth and discovery. Truly, God never stops revealing our true heart issues to us, if only we open our heart to His revelations along this journey called, life. Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger are brilliant. Such an interesting and impressive piece of art. Bravo, indeed!
Thank you for sharing this movie the message was different from how I knew this author and grew up with his stories as a child. I heard he was always a christian then some said he was a reluctant christian and now I know it was the latter. What a beautifully cast of actors who portrayed the real life story of these people when they have helped so many to see how pain is meant to transform anyone into something better its a transitional tool to appreciate life, learning to let go of things and accept it for how it is without judgement, criticism but just accept and allow the lesson to teach us how change is important.
Such an great, sincere, sophisticated, talented and such an gentleman Sir Anthony Hopkins is! I saw this movie very long time ago ....beautiful and soooo grounded❤❤❤
Sad that is reminded me of my mom and she died from cancer and her second husband was with her and he woke me up to say goodbye to my mom that day. Very beautiful Deborah and Sir Anthony best .
Only at 30 min in, & I already love the movie. Great pairing for lead roles between Anthony & Debra. Why can't they make movies like this anymore? I don't watch cancer movies, they're just so heartbreaking. But this was so worth it. Beautifully done. TY Paul, for the upload. Blessings...
Anthony Hopkins has to be the master of acting. Personally, i think that it is his voice, something about it that stays with you. He portrays that inate gift of his, and i salute him for same. Love is the greatest gift of all. The old adage "Health is your Wealth" rings through as well. A Classic.
@@dellacooper-ds5hl...wow..you're the first I've ever heard say such a thing. How beautiful & refreshing even though I know you'd have missed him sorely. I wrote in my diary after my sister died by her own hands: 'better to have had her & known her than never had her at all'.
What an impressive movie. Not only giving a description of the era so precisely, without describing it. Just letting you experience it a bit from the side. How England has changed over this time of fast development and the loss of a compass. Was very moved by the end as well. Smart move of the man to bring that new life in.
Such a powerful movie. Which is harder? Is it harder to give from your heart or is it harder to receive when you are truly in need? In my opinion its much harder to receive. It requires a vulnerability I find difficult. Giving is difficult as well if the receiver refuses your gift. Both require vulnerability.

@marysalisbury9270 Thank You
THIS is the Best Film I have ever seen in my Life.
So sorry for your loss.
I am just so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mom also and she said similar things but for us to please go on and be safe and strong.
@@teresa4177I am so sorry for your loss and hold you in my prayers
This was the first movie my ex husband and I watched February 14 th 1994 at a theater together. We both got remarried and now he’s on his deathbed. Brings back many memories 😢
Got to bed, saw this..11pm...now a total mess, snot, tears and pain...I lost my 12yr old son and theres no pain like losing a child.....I wish I could love again but it's all gone...it's living but not living...it's waiting until the pain stops with.my.last breath....I hope they.are together in Heaven ❤❤❤
I have been blessed like Miriam... mother of Jesus. Give all your pain back to God. And god will bless you again and again.
Claire Suzanne, I am so sorry for the loss of your son. And for the loss to your heart. ❤
Very sad for your loss
I'm so sorry for your loss beloved one. I pray the God of all comfort draw you in His loving arms and give you the peace that passes all understanding
I’m so sorry for your loss 🌸💕🌸
I saw the iitalian version of this film perhaps 30 years ago together with my husband who passed away 9 years ago. I remember then we were both in tears at the end of the film. Today I viewed this English versions and I can feel that he's here with me ❤❤❤
❤
I'm very sorry for your loss. He is with you when you think about him. RIP. ❤
❤
Yes, he is with you. Where there is Love, there is connection. John Edward
That is beautiful that you would say that. Thank you. ❤
Absolutely beautiful movie. True love no matter how long or short is love. Some never get it in their lifetime. breathtaking❤
This film is priceless. I've seen it several times. Inspiring to say the least Sir Anthony Hopkins always delivers a great performance.
Who would have thought Winger and Hopkins could make a tenderhearted movie so beautifully as this! Excellent!❤❤❤
I"m more than pleasantly surprised. This movie is beautifully written, exquisitely acted and brought tears to my eyes several times and for several reasons.
Just such a wonderful film. True love never stops hurting. I still grieve for my wonderful husband and always will. Thank you for this film
Thank you for putting it so well.
Ahh. Love late in life, more beautiful and rewarding than a childhood sweetheart because you appreciate your partner more❤😢🎉
Lewis' 'Mere Christianity" changed my life every time I went thru it. I love that..
Far too little of Edward Hardwicke for me - but a great performance.
Love CS Lewis and Anthony Hopkins. Beautiful film.❤
Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger were really great together. Plus both very beautiful. A good film.
LOVE is a rose with thorns...Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
The Screw tape letters are so true and worth reading
You would also like hearing Jack Hibbs,, he has an app as well.
“The pain now is part of the happiness later.”
When my husband and i were dating I introduced him to this film. I grew up watching it and it always makes me feel such deep appreciation for not only this man’s life but for what I have in my own life.
So beautiful that Douglas was the person to get the Narnia books into films❤
I didn't even know that...!.. my favorite quote from this is, "we read to know we are not alone"
@@janethalken8269 That's a wonderful quote! And very true! ❤❤❤
Wow didn't know that. Thank you.
What a beautiful movie with much wisdom and truth. Thank you Anthony Hopkins for your contribution in the telling of this wonderful life story❤❤❤❤
Great acting Anthony Hopkins is the greatest actor of his time still going 👏👏
I lost my mother as a child, and I lost my wife to cancer. She too was much younger than me and I felt that I should have gone instead of her - she had so much more to live and to give. This film just tore my soul apart. But it was a catharsis that needed to happen... Survivor's guilt is a massive burden...
I'm sorry for your losses. May they be resting in peace.🙏
What a moving film. Thank you for making it available ad free.
I can’t believe I found this movie here. I have been looking for it so long and now I can finally watch it again. Thank you so so so much.❤
Makes me happy to read this 🥰
He`s an excellent actor that I cried and felt the sorrow of that situapaion. My husband died of Cancer , it was very painful for me and sons. Thanks for passing this marvelous film.
Sorry for your deep loss. Yes, movies like these do help us to grieve. Sure hope you'll all be reunited in heaven, with not a trace of a tear left.
One of the purist portrayals of love between people is the love between Jack and his brother, who always stood by him, critisized and guided him when it was necessary. This love and loyalty from his brother impressed me more than love between him and Joy as it was so unconditional and without any jealousy from him as Jack got more attention than he did.
well spotted. that aspect goes over most ppls heads
Anthony Hopkins is one of my best actors and these two worked brilliantly together in this film very enjoyable.
the gentle way of this movie is so nice.
Choose love even though it may bring you pain later, choose love ❤️
Truly beautiful and superb acting. Anthony Hopkins so very underrated- and in this his brother Warnie - the type of family household we had in my day - where brothers or sisters who did not marry lived a lifelong friendship/kinship you rarely see today.
“Christopher are you just trying to be offensive or just merely stupid” so glad Jack found Joy. As awkward a human as she was they had something. Evan more glad he had his brother a truly beautiful and authentic relationship that few achieved. ❤❤❤
Such fine brothers Jack and Warnie looking after Douglas, remembering losing their own mother at similar age. Such a fine story portrayed - sheer cinematic art. ❤
This movie is what it is to be British. To every culture their own - this is British and I hope it survives because it should. It jolly well should.
@@shantishanti1949 This was and still is one of those british movies I need to watch when I realize the dream of living there on day wont come true in this lifetime. Despite the painful and sad story, it makes you feell at home in it, like all products of good storytelling should. Its probably more "english" than the real thing.....:)
This was so special. Clever acting like real people. Anthony Hopkins is one of my favourites. Thank you so much.❤❤❤❤❤
My Mama loved this movie and C.S. Lewis' books...RIP Mama....grief still holds me😢.
Why do You capitalise the word HIS? Thank You.
45:38 a particularly wonderful liitle bit of acting. So many feels in that tiny gesture.
My grandfather’s cousin Whitney Meredith Thompson Ph D knew CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien. He became a closer friend to the Tolkien family - but he told me of their roadster trips in the English country side along with various others when they were at Oxford. I adore films about these two men!
to be able to listen in on conversations with those 2 men would be amazing
Yes, I agree whole-heartedly, that this was a very powerful movie. Got right down to the very core of one's feelings -- only in some they are very difficult to dredge up and share with someone you really love and adore. Anthony Hopkins was the very best there is for this role -- and Deborah Winger was no slouch either!! An excellent way to pass an afternoon -- watching something of such substance. Movies like this leave you in thought, wiping away our tears, and learning a valuable lesson.
Fantastic, Fabulous film..... I loved it. Why have I not watched this until now? Thank you.
My favourite Anthony Hopkins movie . Awesome movie . Thank you sooooo much for sharing this lovely movie.
Mine too!
I loved it!
An amazing story of the true love of Truth. Thank you so much.
This is probably one of the gentlest films I have ever seen. Lovely film.
Beautiful earth is the Lord's taste, but Heaven is so much more Glorious!! Praise God!!!
Mayhaps...
My favorite film!!
I saw it 4 times when it was first released, taking notes in a dark theater. Profound!
Thank you. Life is much too short. Beautiful movie and insight to C. S. Lewis. Love is the only thing and God is love. Bless you.
I come across this film just scrolling on C.S Lewis page. Wow
Thank you for sharing this movie the message was different from how I knew this author and grew up with his stories as a child. I heard he was always a christian then some said he was a reluctant christian and now I know it was the latter. What a beautifully
cast of actors who portrayed the real life story of these people when they have helped so many to see how pain is meant to transform anyone into something better its a transitional tool to appreciate life, learning to let go of things and accept it for how it is without judgement, criticism but just accept and allow the lesson to teach us how change is important.
Douglas gained a loving, stable family also. All things work together for good.
I SAW THIS MANY YEARS AGO. SO SAD. BEST ACTING BY STARS I'VE EVER SEEN.
God created us for a purpose. We need to be close to him to fulfil that purpose. Pain keep us close and devoted to GOD, a revelation.
That was a Beautiful/ sad Movie!! God Bless Anthony Hopkins, Great Actor wish I could give him a BIG HUG ❤🎉✝️🙏
Such an great, sincere, sophisticated, talented and such an gentleman Sir Anthony Hopkins is!
I saw this movie very long time ago ....beautiful and soooo grounded❤❤❤
Such a powerful movie. I saw it again and again over the years. It speaks to the heart about love and letting go.

Absolutely right
@@ТетянаЗадорожна-е4у The movie's name is Shadowlands, as the title of this video shows.
Sad that is reminded me of my mom and she died from cancer and her second husband was with her and he woke me up to say goodbye to my mom that day. Very beautiful Deborah and Sir Anthony best .
The absolute best movie of all time
Only at 30 min in, & I already love the movie.
A Classic.
I don’t regret the pain of losing the love of my life. I am so thankful we had thirty years together.
@@dellacooper-ds5hl...wow..you're the first I've ever heard say such a thing. How beautiful & refreshing even though I know you'd have missed him sorely.
I wrote in my diary after my sister died by her own hands: 'better to have had her & known her than never had her at all'.
Grief is the price we pay for love
Thank you for inviting me 😊❤🙏💝
OUTSTANDING !!!! Anthony Hopkins is brilliant as always !!!!!!
I have loved however it was never reciprocated. I’m in my 70s and enjoy my life as it is.
I rarely ever cry. This is a beautiful story of love and life.
Beautiful. He loved.
This one makes more than think - makes you really feel
What an absolutely fantastic film... with tears in places.. blessings from Llangybi North Wales.
They don't make movies like this anymore. Really brought forth the tears. I so seldom cry anymore, but this surely opened the gates.❤
What an impressive movie. Not only giving a description of the era so precisely, without describing it. Just letting you experience it a bit from the side. How England has changed over this time of fast development and the loss of a compass.
Was very moved by the end as well. Smart move of the man to bring that new life in.
England might have changed but oxford hasn't. Still full of those arrogant and lifeless academics in the midst of a crumbling society.
my most favorite movie of all time.
'Most' isn't necessary in this sentence. By default, there is no higher favourite than your favourite.
This is what the internet is for. Many thanks to Paul Ross, the film also has subtitles. Wonderfully. Debra Winger is amazing.
Thank you 😊
This is my second time watching this marvelous, heartwarming movie. Anthony Hopkins is the best actor.
So very well said! And it's very perceptive of you to be able to understand it and put it into words so well.
All gifts involve risk. I must remember that means risk for the receiver as well as the giver. 🙏
A time when attics were a treasure trove (literally) of memories and mementos of ones life and family.
