Put it this way. The Spurs really wanted Tidjane Salaun at 8. They were so upset he wasn't available that they traded pick 8 for assets 6+ years down the road. Nobody has a better track record with international prospects than the Spurs. The Hornets might have actually gotten ahead of the curve for once.
The spurs are building a a team around a french superstar, have a brilliant track record of developing international players, and have a team need for forward to play next to Wemby, currently Sochan just doesn't fit. The hornets are building around a core of Lamelo, Miller, and Bridges, do not have a track record of international development, and are log-jammed at the forward position.
He's young but you're asking him to develop basically every part of his game while also stepping up the difficulty from LNB Pro A to the best league in the world.
You don't just draft them and greatness happens, and in my opinion this pick is bad for both the hornets and for Tidjane's development. If we are working a trade with the Spurs this move makes much more sense to me

Scoot was ranked one of the worst ball players during the first half of the season, not to mention he's constantly getting injured.

The front office did a lot of work leading to the draft. It seems they went through all the options. Ended up with a guy they were invested in. Jeff P went to see T.S. In France people really believe in him. Crazy potential. Professional cutter.
I’m saying it here first: that agile hezi going right is very similar to LaMelo’s signature hezi. Body control is really good and is a confident shooter who’s not afraid of the moment.

Our length and athleticism looks great. I believe this new group is not overly concerned with what fans want for a year. I think the are willing to get healthy build a little depth and tank. Make a move for Cooper Flag next year.

People say hes like Giannis, but need to understand that Giannis couldn't shoot a beach ball into the ocean coming into the league. In some ways he still cant.
Salaun can shoot. Period. That raises his floor considerably. Can't wait for everyone else to see that.

I have no problem admitting that was better than I expected, but also have no problem still admitting that Giannis' shooting stats were much worse than Salauns entering the draft even though Giannis was playing in Greece's second tier league. Giannis only hit 68% from the FT his first year in the NBA(Very close to his career free throw percentage by the way)... he could have just been on a heater from 3s. Also he has had all the time in the world to improve his shot since JKidd and nothing's happened.

@@DCIphanatic take away his first 5 games of Pro Ball ever where he had a super slow start and he is shooting 36% from the 3 on 4.5 attempts and 77% FT.
Giannis had 5 games coming into the NBA in Greeces second league where he shot over 50% and took at least 2 3pointers.
Tidjane has 16 and shot 53% on 5 attempts per game over a 9 game span where every one of those games he shot at least 50%.
Tidjane and Giannis shooting stats coming into the NBA isn't even close.
Given the Hornets history of making their draft picks better shooters, this guy is going to shoot the lights out.
@@jasonborucki4207 Excluding his first 5 games (why would we do that?? I'll do it anyway) he shot 149 three pointers and made 51 of them, for 34.2% - this was regular season play with Cholet. He also went on into the playoffs for 3 games and shot 5-17 from deep and 1-9 from the line. So here, your new adjusted number is *33.7%* , and this is ignoring the first 5 games like you asked for some reason. His FT% on that same span including his 1-9 in playoffs is 63% with 55 made and 87 attempted. He's about as good of a shooter as Giannis is, and neither of them are very good.
For a 6 game span of consecutive playoff games Giannis was 58% from the field, 39% from deep on 5.2 three attempts per game - do you see how looking at selective stats like that doesn't mean very much? Neither of them can shoot but you can cherry pick good games for each. I'm assuming you were looking at his nice streak between december and february for your 9 game span for Salaun, so let's look at the other 25 games and we can see that he's just not a very good shooter: 26% from deep, 35% from the field on high volume, 62% from the line.
We are taking someone who was struggling to shoot both from the field and from deep in the international scene and asking them to develop their game while increasing their difficulty from Cholet to NBA. It's a long shot
Absolutely love the pick 6’10” energy big with defense and shooting. He’s like a bigger less athletic Aaron Gordon with better shooting touch. He’s going to be the heart beat of this core.

I love this pick. This is the type of swing you want to take at #6 in a draft like this. He’s a project. But this is team being built right now to be perennially winning and competing in the playoffs within 4-5 years. Also love that this organization went with an international player. Cliff is also a perfect international scout. Charles Lee is the Truth. Things are looking up!

Different staff. I think the development is a possibility. Lee coached Giannis and Tatum. He know whats works with players like that. Salaun will be in the same mold.
I Love this pick. He has possibly the highest upside in the draft. Prolly 2 years away frok being productive.

I don't agree that this isn't a play-in team if everyone is healthy. They can outrun a lot of teams in the east. Just overwhelm them with pure energy.
The spurs have the teams lottery protected pick next year in what would be a better draft. The following year, it goes to a 2nd round pick. I don't know if they want to risk losing a first round pick for a play-in spot.

I don't know if I want them to risk losing that 1st round pick for the 8th spot and a first round exit in a good draft. However, if they are fighting for a non play-in spot like the 5th or 6th spot, I don't mind then losing that pick cause it shows they are a legitimately good team and could realistically make it to the 2nd round. I'm still trying to figure out what trade that cost them to lose that pick. I've been talking about that pick for over a year, but you are the first person to actually reply to that comment and locked on hornets never discussed it or the details.
They won 43 games when lamelo played 75 games in yr 2.

They literally just traded for a 34 year old reggie Jackson for 3 second round picks. Bro ain't helping this team win. Salaun would not have been available at 9, Spurs wanted Salaun.
Truth is we don't know anything yet. Last year after BM was picked, there were folks saying he wasn't ready to contribute and maybe flame out before Summer League. Something that has to change with the fan base is that default to doom and sulking.
Yes, what needs to change is the Hornets' organizational decision-making, culture, maturity, and win loss record.
After that, I'm pretty sure the fan base will be good!

You can’t compare Saluan to Kai. Kai was 100% a freak athlete and that was it. Saluan has a nice looking shot, hard worker, and a great cutter.

Everybody in France who knows basketball will tell you Tidjane Salaun is our best prospect right behind Nolan Traoré. The best player in this class.

Won’t be surprised if he’s starting by the allstar break. Ik the there’s the defensive concerns, but I can see the effort being good enough, and the shooting should come along well.
Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play a significant role at all until 2026, either.....

Dalton Knecht, Killingham or Clingan are all close to sure things in the pros and would have been better picks. Salaun is about as raw as they come, that is like playing the lottery and more likely to bust than hit.
If Coach Lee can mold this kid into even a shadow of the Greek Freak, then its a success in my opinion. I was initially not too happy with the pick but after sleeping on it im really not mad.
If Tidjane Salaun is at least 90 percent of the player than Giannis is oh my. I was sitting there and thinking who is the Giannis of this draft, and Salaun is the first name that came to my mind.

With the right coaching staff, he'll be ready to go sooner rather than later. And at this age, with any luck (assuming he doesn't get seriously injured), he'll soon be a better and more long-term Miles Bridges than we realize now. I love this decision already.
The avg 3pt percentage for point guards in the NBA is 37% so I might would argue that's pretty good for someone so damn long 😂

One shoots threes and is pretty bad finishing around the rim.
The other is elite finishing at the rim, but can't shoot.

Definitely the most surprising pick of the night by any lottery team. If he turns out to be Giannis, then amazing (he kinda looks like him). But this is giving off Bismack/Vonleh vibes at the moment. Hope we didn’t screw the pooch, definitely high risk/high reward. Oh well, time will tell.
Only thing with Bismack is we knew he couldn’t play worth a lick when we drafted him and just looked like a potential defensive stalwart. At least this guy looks like he can play. We will see though. Because I thought Vonleh was more polished than he ultimately was.

Players I've seen in the second round who have size 1) Johnny Furphy SG/SF- 6'8" 2) Bobi Klintman - F- 6'9") 3) Tyler Smith- F- 6'9" 4) Grant Nelson - F- 6'11" 5) Kyle Filipowski F/C- 6'11" 6) Ulrich Chomche F/C- 6'10" 7) Kwame Evans - F- 6'9" Furphy, Klintman, Smith, Filipowski I thought were going to go in the first round possibly. Granted I've not seen some of these prospects and am going to try to go watch a few of them now.
I'm a huge fan of Nikola Djurasic. I feel like he's a perfect fit and potentially vastly underrated
He has as much upside as anyone in this draft and I’ll take that at pick 6!!!
Salaun is a good pick for someone like the Spurs but really doesn't make sense to me for our team. We don't have a strong track record of international NBA development first of all, and we had a big need at shooting guard. Now we get another PF when we already have too many forwards on the roster, we need to be looking to make some deals. We're projected to start Cody again at SG unfortunately and Salaun might be 4th on the depth chart. If we're not planning on trading the spurs we shouldn't care that they wanted to draft him next, ideally we draft based on team need not based on other teams assumed picks.
The league has seemingly become obsessed with french players after Wemby's rookie season last year, which really doesn't make sense to me yet. Wemby is tall and freakish and fun to watch, but he's not playing winning basketball yet. The redraft of 2024 in 5 years is going to be wild

As a Charlotte fan, we should be burned out on this organization, trying to build through the draft and coach up the extremely young core we have on the roster. Deep Playoff teams ultimately who win a championship always have a veteran superstar or 2 and great young pieces that complement them and the rest of the roster is filled with amazing depth Rotational players that Don’t mess up the chemistry when the starters are out. Charlotte needs a superstar veteran and free agency is the only way that’s gonna happen. Until we land that veteran who can change the losing culture here we’re a 20-30 win team. This podcast talks about swinging for the fences. We haven’t swung and hit a Homerun in the draft since Kemba. Hopefully the new ownership and coach tries to take some big swings in free agency in the next few years
It’s not as simple as just going out and signing a superstar veteran. Charlotte is a small market and isn’t exactly a free agent destination for superstar vets.

To be honest I don’t like the pick I originally wanted the guy who went first but we dropped to sixth in the lottery. I was hoping for someone who could shoot but this guy has basically played professionally for 2 years and he has size is mobile and plays defense so if he can develop a consistent shot and they resign Bridges the Hornets could have a big starting lineup. Ball, Miller, Bridges, Salaun, Williams could be fun to watch

Haven’t watch the video yet but dying to know what the trade offers were. Allegedly Memphis was sending Marcus smart & the #9 pick for #6. Maybe the hornets felt the spurs would have snagged Salaün at #8 for the French connection. Portland wanted Clinglan bad, sucks we couldn’t swing a deal for their #7 & #14 picks. We could have gotten Salaün & Knecht. Would have been a huge WIN!
If that's the case (smart plus 9) then I just lost all hope of things being competent under the new regime.
Marcus Smart would have been the prize in that deal. Him, Grant and Mark would have been a good defensive core, plus smart would bring much needed leadership.
We didn't want Brandon and look how he came out. I'm giving Salaun my full support as a fan, but who knows, he might be a solid player or a bust like Bouknight or Thor. We didn't really need this year's draft tbh cuz I think charlotte has the "win-now" team

Lamelo Ball has 1 more shot with me to show he can lead Charlotte to the playoffs. I use to love the 90s Charlotte Hornets I think it was that court that caught my attention an the excitement with Curry Bogues Rice LJ Vlade Zo Mason Kendall Gill Hersey Hawkins all the notables from that mid to late 90s Charlotte team so it would be cool to see them bounce back now. Jalen Bridges would be a nice pickup, watched him for two years at wvu before transferring to baylor, has a nice shot...kind of 3 and D guy.
