    Hi Mark, Thank you for producing this video highlighting the skills of H.M Royal Marines Band. As an ex RM Bandy who served in the late 70’s and 80’s I am immensely proud that our legacy are the fine musicians and performers you see today. The location and ‘beat retreat’ which has whole separate deeply historical reference, on Horseguards Parade is an historical event, held around the 10th June to celebrate the birthday of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh who was the Captain General and ceremonial head of the Royal Marines. In the years served at the staff band in Deal, I performed that each year and never had a birthday off as Prince Philip and I shared the same birthday! It was always a pleasure to play in such historical settings and I absolutely know that every serving musician past and present will recognise that particular event as a backdrop to some magnificent performances showcasing the talent of the band and individuals and choreography it takes to pull it off! Keep watching and please do support the Royal Marines Band Service live channel. W

    Absolutely chuffed that you found this performance...in my humble opinion, the best I've ever seen from HM RM Band. Stunning vocals but the fact they can all play a complex orchestral piece whilst marching in perfect order just blows my mind!! Can't wait for them to trump this one!!

    Royal Horse Guards Parade. Its the other side to Whitehall where the Cenotaph is, where we watched the Remembrance Services a while ago. The Military have lots of different events during the Year, mainly Summer. I went to one of them a while ago. To HM Royal Marines Beating Retreat. It was wonderful - and so was this. So much so I am going right back to the beginning to watch it again. The Music reminded me of 'Mars' from Gustav Holst's Planet Suite - the same English Composer who wrote the music to I Vow to Thee My Country.

    • @johncunningham6928
      @johncunningham6928 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hans Zimmer did use 'Mars, the Bringer of War' in his sound track for Gladiator, and apparently the Holst famile got a bit sniffy about it. But hearing Mars played by a military band... Awesome...

    Its not well known that each bandsman / woman plays two instruments in the ceremonial band itself. For example the drummers are actually buglers who play drums. They also play an instrument or sing in the orchestra for concerts. And we see both combined here.
    Absolutely stunning. The best of the best doing what they do best.
    I always wondered 'Ravels Bolero' would sound like played by the RM band at the slow march.

      True but they all have to be able to play three instrument, a Bass player will, for example play Double Bass, Brass Bass and Bass guitar. Drummers will play drums, Bugle and even Xylophone

    My God Mark that was superb! I've said it before I think the Royal Marines Band is as good,if not better, than any professional orchestra anywhere! A nugget for you- the opening scenes of Gladiator where Maximus is leading his troops against the German tribes,that was filmed in a forest in Essex apparently-anyway a fantastic version of a beautiful score- stay well mate, stay safe- snoggo the moggos for me x🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    Got to love it. It's always so impressive, must have watched it like a hundred and one times. I remember having someone arguing with me, swearing blind she was singing in Latin. The song - by Hans Zimmer - has what are essentially New Age vocals which are from a totally made up pseudo-'language' just for the song. It's not Latin, in spite of it being from a film heavily featuring the Roman Empire. The person arguing with me was adamant that it was Latin and it really is just one of those factoids about the film that it's just random vocalisation. Sort of like how Karl Jenkin's 'Adiemus' uses lots of made up sounds posing as parts of words to evoke a sort of 'Earth language' or 'universal language'. Suffice it to say, the person arguing with me had assumed it was Latin and sat there imagining some kind of deeper meaning in the words like it was some Roman hymn. Nope. Made up sounds, with no translation.

    • @ThePalaeontologist
      @ThePalaeontologist ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In fact, to add to this, the original version by Lisa Gerrard, for Gladiator, is specifically said by Lisa herself to be in her own made up language without meanings (as such) she has been singing since before her music career began. The syllables are able to be phonetically written down but they are like bit parts of real words. It's basically sung in the made up language of Lisa Gerrard, and it's about evoking emotion, not meaning in the words. Most people will just assume it's Latin.
      It never quite sounded like Latin to me (myself knowing a bit due to my background in palaeontology and archaeology) and I therefore had a suspicion it wasn't Latin. After looking into it, no, it's not. But I had this one dude getting angry with me for telling him to the point that it's not Latin. He was even mocking the English, saying it's funny that the English are singing the songs of their Roman overlords. I was like, no, just stop (lol)
      Lisa Gerrard said in an interview about what language she is supposed to be singing in: "I sing in the language of the Heart. [...] It's an invented language that I've had for a very long time. I believe I started singing in it when I was about 12. Roughly that time. And I believed that I was speaking to God when I sang in that language."
      In other words, she's basically singing in tongues to express her emotional music from the heart. It is done with belief, like someone who is speaking gibberish but so confidently that they basically fool people into thinking it's a real language. Except, there is no deliberate deception as such, she is just singing how she likes to sing. But she can sing in English as well. It's just, for the soundtrack to Gladiator, she sang in what is known as 'idioglossia'; an idiosyncratic language one essentially, makes up between one or two people. I see that as being similar to how a lot of New Age music would use guttural vocals or syllable sounds elongated, but I think she is genuinely doing it in her own way. Someone obviously had to make a transcript of that and that will be what the Royal Marines Band singer would have followed - she has it down to a tee in my view (I even prefer her version to the original)

      @@ThePalaeontologistSinging sounds without words is also the basis of Mouth Music in the Scottish tradition, IE using the voice to imitate instrument music in order to provide an accompaniment to dance. Not as common as it used to be, but someone in my dad's family used to be able to do it in the 1940s - great for an impromptu ceilidh at Hogmanay apparently!

    • @ThePalaeontologist
      @ThePalaeontologist ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jacquieclapperton9758 Yeah I think I vaguely heard of it once. I also just remembered from a Ray Mears program he did in Canada, regarding traditional survival skills from native cultures, that he was shown throat singing by women whom very much so just used reverberations in making low frequency sounds, sort of like buzzing, inside an igloo. Mongolian singing can be like that as well.
