It happens every 2 years on Horseguards Parade, I went to the 2018 one, but was cancelled in 2020, it won’t happen again until 2024

I'm 18 years deep UK infantry and I'm not ashamed to say nobody does the drums better than the UK Marines, Those men handle a rifle just as well when needed and are always humble. Top blokes.

Remembrance Day is actually on 11/11. We have remembrance Sunday where we have parades, it's the closest Sunday to the 11th.

I am British but have lived abroad (In the Americas) for the last 23 years....
But my heart still swells with pride to see these events...the sheer dedication and professionalism of these people never ceases to amaze me.
The Royal Marines are simply at another level. To march like this and co-ordinate a 90° turn with aplomb into a narrower street...(WITH TRAFFIC ISLANDS....for heavens sake!)
and ......Not miss a beat whilst doing so..... Such skill.....it is truly on another level....marching ten abreast, whilst playing a musical instrument...... Just....just Brilliant.
And they are the same in combat...... coordinated.... skillful.... Truly proud to be British....to the core.
I am 81 now, but have aching memories of marching behind these wonderful guys. I could have marched for ever!
I still watch them whenever I can and, although I also love our other military bands, I think these musicians are the best in the world.
Since you were upset that the video came to an end, there is a video on TH-cam which shows the whole ceremony of Beating the Retreat, which I am sure you would enjoy.
Mind you, it is over and hour long! Just imagine performing that in the heat of the day as well.

I spent 10 years in the Royal Marines and did a few occasions where the band was involved. Everytime I watch them it makes me very proud. Ian Spencer (RMA21067) my regimental number.

I’m a 30 year veteran from a regiment called “The Rifles” As a regiment we don’t beat the retreat, we sound the retreat with bugles. This dates back to the American war if independence when the Rifles could only communicate in the dense woodland of ~North America by using Bugles. The Rifles march at a faster pace of 170 paces to the minute to prove their alertness. During the Peninuslar wars The ~Rifles were used as forward skirmishes whose job was to take out the commanders in the oncoming French columns. Take a look at the Light Devision sounding the retreat at Horse Guards in 1991. Brian Holman who is the ~Bugle Major is this parade was, at one time my C/Sgt in the Rifle Company I commanded.

As a former Royals Marines Commando" Bootneck" We are all very proud of our "Bandies" We are all part of The Corps of His Majesty's Royal Marines. Which is broken down into HM Bandservice Royal Marines, HM Corps of drums Royal Marines, and the fighting arm of the Corps, HM Royal Marines Commandos. The members of the bandservice do undertake military training as well as their musical training, after successfully completed this they can apply for Commando selection and win The coverted Green Beret. It's a shame so many young in our country are no longer proud to be British! We were brought up to be proud of our country , respect our royal family, and be respectful to all .

Make it’s because we recognise that the UK has become a haven of hatred and bigotry. Many of us in the Celtic nations also see ‘British’ as a synonym for ‘English’.
I'm a former Royal Marine, and when you pass out of training, they have the Royal Marines Band there to march you on and off the parade ground and to perform while the Kings Squad performs a small drill display. Having them play sooo close is absolutely awesome and always sends a tingle down the spine. (And glad you girls like them)
P.S. Did you know the Royal Marines Band played the introduction to Gerry Anderson's 1960's Thunderbirds show? Listen to that if you want a bit of a thrill :) )

I have many vetrans in my family, but the one that gets me the most is my grandads dad. He was a first mate in the royal navy and was blown up by a German bomb in ww2. My great grandma who I'm named after was pregnant with my grandad at that time and already had two young boys. he was only 30 when he died and never got to see my grandad before he died, my heart brakes for my grandma for having two boys and being pregnant and loosing her husband and for my grandad for never even being held by his father. He has never complained or really even mentioned it, but I remember after doing our family tree showing him the ship his dad served on, some photos I've found and when I showed his his cremates he chocked up which kills me until this day. What our servicemen and women do and their families sacfrice should never be forgotten. I am incredibly proud of my great grandad for saving our country from tyranny.
My 2 grandfathers served in the Royal Marines in WW2 and members of both Paternal & Maternal family served with the Marines going back to at least the begining of the last Century. And nobody does it better than the Royal Marines.

My Grandfather walked from Oldham Manchester to Portsmouth when he was a boy to join the Royal Marines I think he was about 14. A journey of about 250 miles or there abouts. I have his war medals and his marksman medal. He served throughout the Second Word War. And took part in capturing back 🇬🇱 Greenland. When he left the Royal Marines he became a Ministry of Defence policeman. Until he retired. One of my family heroes.
Of COURSE it makes us proud! When I was a Student Nurse, we had the Royal Marine's DANCE Band, at our Hospital Annual Ball....😁💕

I’ve marched behind the Royal Marines band on many occasions whilst serving during remembrance services and many a parade in London as well as other places
I am so proud of our military traditions. When I was a little kid my grandmother used to take me to The Royal Tournament at Earls Court (sadly Earls Court is no more and our Royal Tournament was dumped forever by the Labour Party 😡). Such a shame and a big mistake because it was probably one of the best recruitment tools. Within said Tournament would be something called The Field Gun Race done by the bravest and strongest lads in the Royal Navy as it was pretty dangerous to say the least but a huge source of pride and true brotherhood to be picked for the team. Quite a few recording on YT so just put "field gun race" in the search. It's absolutely mental to watch!

As a life long marching drummer I'm impressed by the showmanship of forty + snare drummers. The actual execution is a bit shakey, however. It might well be affected by the Marines' inexplicable tactic of having the drummers wear gloves while playing. It would be similar to asking a piano player to play wearing boxing gloves.
I have march behind this band for nearly 56 years as a servicing member and a Royal Marine Veteran, it does not how old you are or how long ago you severed, the sound of the band makes the years fall away and you grow 2inch In height

My son is a Captain in the RM band service, during October did 2 weeks in New York doing several gigs. As an ex Royal Marine I am proud of what he and the band service do. Great music

Actual Remembrance Day in the UK is the 11th of November, (the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month), but is traditionally celebrated on the nearest Sunday to that date, known as Remembrance Sunday.
There are more than 200 musicians marching here so keeping them all synchronised is superb. The leopard print cover is basically padding to help take the weight of the bigger, heavier drums. The really early versions of these were actual Leopard skins but the current ones are man made and use the pattern because it is tradition.

My dad was a British WW2 Commando, part of the Spearhead. My mum was a Teacher and drove an ambulance in occupied Belgium. They met during the liberation and married shortly after. Yes, I'm that old 🧓. I loved this video, even though we were getting further away as the video went on. Thankyou.

As an former naval nurse, member of the QUEEN ALEXANDER ROYAL NAVAL NURSING SERVICE. I was present at a few RM band performances. Full of pride and emotion. Sunset and evening hymn always brings tears . I will be at the Royal Albert Hall remembrance service Saturday 12th November where they always attend and preform . This evening is attended by His Majesty the King. My husband and I are so looking forward to it . Following morning we will take part in the march past at the cenotaph. He will be with his Falkand war veteran platoon. Thank you for showing so much respect for the British forces. 🇬🇧

I used to be in that band as a drummer doing exactly the same march through to Horse Guards Parade in London from Wellington Barracks close to Buckingham Palace. This was on the way to performing Beating Retreat in front of Royalty or Senior hierarchy every year. It is open to the public as well and is musically spectacular. You can find the full performance on TH-cam, look for Beating Retreat 2022, I think you'll enjoy it. Remember turn the sound up!
By the way I still have the drum! The skins are real and very heavy. I used to wear one if I was on tenor drum. When we perform abroad we use synthetic skins. The originals are very old.
My Dad was Royal Navy and he loved military band music. He was fond of the massed pipes and drums bands of Scotland, but for him the sheer military precision of the Royal Marines Band(s) was pre-eminent. He swore no one could march and play with greater precision, pomp, pride than The Royal Marine Band(s) {Son look how straight those lines are}

I do enjoy watching your reactions. I have nothing to do with the military, but when I lived in London 30 years ago, I used to cycle past Horse guards parade most days and often the bands were out there practising. It became a favourite part of my cycle ride. I still think of it fondly.
Wonderful to come across this - especially on Remembrance Sunday. I did my bit with the cornet in the local silver band at the local war memorial today but obviously we weren't in the same league as these wonderful musicians. One of the highlights of my career in the Royal Navy was marching in front of a Royal Marines band from Horse Guards Parade through Central London in 1981 as part of the street lining for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. And then we got to do it all again at the end of the ceremony as we marched back to Horse Guards. Thanks for sharing and love your comments!
Remembrance Day here in the UK is also 11th November but the church ceremonies are on the Sunday nearest to it, hence the 13th this year. Throughout most of Britain on the 11th at 11 am there will be 2 miniutes of silence and the same on SundayThere was a reminder of this in my local Aldi this morning.

Re Remembrance day, in the UK it is held on the 11th hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, same as in the USA, and lots of ceremonies are held around the country on this day,... but the main London ceremonial laying of the poppies by the royal families, commonwealth officials, members of parliament, and members of the military followed by the March past the cenotaph is always held on the nearest Sunday after the 11th of November,... nice to see your love and enthusiasm for the military...

It is a great pity that we don't show our veterans the same respect that they are awarded in the USA. It breaks my heart, and of everyone that I know, to see them homeless and mentally ill. It is often the Salvation Army that picks up the responsibility on behalf of us.
@@glynnwright1699 yes the US does better in this are, but it is improving in the UK. The military covenant was a breakthrough and the NHS is raising it's game for veterans too. Many amazing charities too. Check out Healthier Heroes and look what Burnley Football Club has been doing.

@Glynn Wright I would have a look at DMRC Stanford Hall before you make comments like that. You should see the rehab for severely injured personnel who will become veterans due to their incapacities. Before you make comments that you do not fully understand.

A while ago you showed the secret drum corp,these guys have proper jobs(bankers,teachers etc,the marines are combat solders ,medics ,drivers) I think a big difference,thanks for showing it,keep it up
Love your reactions and when you cover the Royal Marines I get an extra buzz. My grandfather was RM Bandmaster in WWII and I was in the RM cadet band in Portsmouth when I was a kid. Got to perform with the RM band in many occasions. Happy memories.

My nephew is an officer in The Royal Marine Commandos and when I saw him marching down The Mall (in front of Buckingham Palace) I thought I would burst with pride.
My dad was an army percussionist and I was lucky to travel the world with him. He used to practise at home and he was awesome.

Still remember my passing out parade as Captain guard in the Royal Navy in 1979. The music made be proud, so did my mum and dad.
My mum was in a band with my grandad. He played the trumpet and mum played the drums. A band like this but it was an accordion band.
My ex was also in a band and was a drummer. He done the stick lifting and it amazed me the first time I seen it. His band was in competition and stuff. It was a 12th of July Protestant band sort of thing

I used to work for 👮♀️ my beat was hyde park, used to help them out at each gate within the park to practice, but sadly got caught up with the Iranian embassy siege….. was only 19 … but man I was sooo proud of our boys and girls(all active duty)🥰
Grandad was a Royal Marine Bandmaster and as he died before I was born, I never met him, but I've heard him play. HMV made a record of him playing as guest soloist on the clarinet in a classical piece with the orchestra of Copenhagen. He taught at the Portsmouth RM School of Music and as at that time Queen Victoria was in residence at Osborne House just across the water on the Isle of Wight, I am told that Her Majesty used to request his presence when being entertained musically by a small group of Royal Marine bandsmen. That gives you a good Idea of the standard that they had to achieve to become a member of the band, and they have to be competent on more than one instrument apparently. I'm proud of them all and appreciate very much your enthusiasm for them.
Brilliant. Ive seen Beating The Retreat and Trooping of the Colour when my dear late cousin took part as a musician in the band of the Scots Guards. I'm ex WRAF myself and love all this.
It’s the sound when you hear the band live that was always most impressive to me, so powerful and wonderful. Ex Royal Navy here.
Oh and armistice day is 11th November here….it falls on the closest Sunday which is 13th this year
The leopard skin is worn by the bass drummer to prevent the sheer weight of the drum causing damage to the uniform and to provide some protection by spreading the weight over a larger area. Used not just by the Royals but Army bands too.

Actually, the tiger / leopard skins are a throwback to the early days of British military bands when the drummers were often Africans and would wear tribal costume (back then regimental bands were all civilian volunteers and dressed to impress). It's now carried on as a tradition.
The bass drummer wears the tiger skin. The tenor drummers (usually percussionists) wear leopard skins. The skins were originally worn as a warning to the enemy as "look what we can do"...
Did you notice at 9:29 the double tap on the bass drum and the band strikes up after 5 paces? Also during some cermonies you may pick up two double taps in succession when they are marching the halt will come 5 paces later
