    Alpha: *E4*
Agad: A very nice move by alpha taking control of the d5 and f5 square but also threatening mate in 127 and what do you do here as black? You could go E5 but that would lose you the game immediately. So, this is move 1 and in this position, Stockfish.. resigned..the..game.

We are getting closer and closer to "solving" the game of chess as a single puzzle: "White to move and win". Either there is a solution to this, or, if not, then the "puzzle" would be, against each of the 12 possible first moves by white: "Black to move and draw".

If I had the money I would hire two actors (with *very* good memories) to go into a chess club and play a few games from this match-up. Hidden cameras would record spectators' reactions.

It`d be way easier to give them some sort of hints. Like notes in the phones, small papers they could look into unnoticed, etc., so they would have to memorize only the late game when possibly some attention is already drawn

Aristotle was misattributed that quote, Will Durant said it while commenting on Aristotle's thoughts in his book ‘The Story of Philosophy.' It's an excellent quote, however.
This is what Aristotle more accurately said, "As it is not one swallow or a fine day that makes a spring, so it is not one day or a short time that makes a man blessed and happy.” And later, “these virtues are formed in man by his doing the right actions.”
Will Durant used those two ideas to create the quote in question from Aristotle's thoughts but the bigger name accidentally stole the credit.

This AI (her, she, or other nomenclature) seems to love constricting her opponents development. She is so good at it that it becomes totally obvious that this strategy is really productive, even at material expense, (she is not going to 'overlook' tactical spongs that us humans have to endure) that if only we could actually perceive her depth at this tactic we'd be halfway good at this damn game.

-how many grandmasters (or chess players) can afford a living through playing chess?
-what does it take to become a grandmaster?
-more or less, how much money do the top 10 chess players make through tournament winnings or similar?
    thanks for taking your time!

A double gambit - this is absolutely amazing! I remember some 5 years ago an engine (I forgot which) surprisingly played an unorthodox gambit and got a great position for the pawn with the opposite pieces rendered "mere spectators" (the words of the commentator). In the meantime, until Alpha Zero appeared on the scene, I think that didn't happen much (sb. correct me).

  • @ismaelvolf4759

AlfaZero shows real beauty of the game of chess. What I love most is the long term strategic decisions - sacrificing pawns and the compensation comes like more than 20 moves after that. Its incredible to "think" that far. It shows real human-based "thinking" only with the machine precision. I can admire Magnus and others but this is a different league and the games are not boring because of that human element of thinking alfa possess.
What I also like is that it proves to me in full nudity that Stockfish is nothing more than a calculator - counting pawns and material and so on. Yes no man can beat this but its only because human brain cannot compete with the calculator but the creativity is not there. AlfaZero, on the other hand, shows creativity so far unseen within the machines. It is fascinating but also scary how capable this AI already is. In bad hands or with bad orders agains human kind that would be no fun. Not even MacGyver would be able to solve this.

I doubt (but cannot exclude) they played in the US.. The engine that you play against on Lichess when you select "play with the computer" is not Stockfish, its "Fairy-Stockfish", an engine derived from Stockfish designed to support multiple chess variants.
And even when you select the level 8 it's very limited. If I recall correctly it's limited to 1 second of thinking and 22 depth.

@@-zelda- I appreciate your taking the time to explain that to me, because I'd been trying to get an explanation of what "Fairy Stockfish" is and how it relates to the supercomputer Stockfish. So it's a dumbed-down version. If you find it easy to beat, you must be pretty darned good! I've been playing several games a day on level 5 for two years and am stalled there, winning or drawing half my games (and always playing white). Its knight play is astounding, if I don't remove both of its knights within 15 moves I'm going to take an L for sure. It easily breaks through defensive positions I thought were impregnable.
It does have one blatant flaw, which accounts for nearly all my wins. It doesn't worry enough about my passed pawns until it's too late. By the time it realizes it's in deep trouble, it's so late that it has to give up a piece to prevent the passed pawn from queening. Then I just trade down and queen multiple pawns. It's also obsessed with taking any undefended pawn or piece, and I've learned that if I deliberately leave an inessential pawn or piece undefended, it will go after those pieces singlemindedly while I am pushing my pawn to the 7th rank. My wins all follow the same formula, capitalizing on these two inherent flaws.
One other flaw is that it is overly aggressive for Black. Sure, many games its aggression cleans my clock. But on many occasions we have a very closed position that is an obvious draw, and it insists on sacrificing a pawn or even a piece to open it back up. But those aren't the type of sacrifices throw the other side into a deadly trap. It's a pointless sacrifice, giving up material simply to open up a drawn game. I've won lots of games against it by locking the position down in trench warfare, and once it hands me the material advantage then I just trade down to the endgame.
So it has its flaws, but it does detect the minutest of weaknesses that I didn't even realize existed. And its knight play is better than any human I've ever played.

Hello, im wondering why it isnt possible to bring the Knight from f3 to d5 so it guards the queen check at c7 ?

After black plays Rc8, white needs to move Rb7+. The took capture you show would allow blank to take the white queen, right?

Queen E5 for black on move 12! then you can move your knight to a central position and move the rook

at 13:20 why Nd3 and not Nd5? It would take the c7 square from black or am I missing a tactic?

Yes, white will play Rb7+ and force the gaining of materials. If black plays Rxb7, white can respond with Qxb7+ and forcing the king to the back rank and white will skewer the rook with Qb8+
