Anatoly Karpov was the 12th World Chess Champion from 1975 to 1985. Karpov's playing style, described as a "boa constrictor", is solidly positional, taking minimal risks but reacting mercilessly to the slightest error by his opponent. By pinning White's knight in the Nimzo-Indian Defense, Black prevents the threatened 4.e4 and seeks to inflict doubled pawns on White.
