  • While some people are mystified by its popularity, folks who love ranch dressing tend to eat it on many more things than just salad. It can go on wings, pizza, sandwiches, veggies, and many other foods. The list is basically never ending. It's even been named the official American dressing.
If you're a true ranch aficionado, you may have noticed that the ranch you can buy in a bottle and eat at home is not quite up to the level of quality of the stuff you get in the little ramekins at restaurants. Trust us, you're not just imagining it. Here's why ranch dressing always tastes better in restaurants.

Fresh-made Ranch Dressing is the BEST! When I was a teen, my best friend's Mom made Ranch Dressing every other Friday Night.
    She usually already had the
Mix Packets,, but would send us to the Store down the block for Buttermilk and Mayonnaise so it was always a fresh batch.
One of my best teenage memories.

The biggest difference is whole milk fat Buttermilk instead of partial skim Buttermilk, that can also be extra heavy mayo instead of standard mayo. Milkfat content is pure flavor. Whisk the Seasoning into the Buttermilk first, then add Mayo and Stir and Fold. Mixing by hand takes a solid 15-20 minutes at least to get a smooth and thick consistency.

If you want to make your own ranch from scratch all the dairy, mayo and herbs in the world is still going to be "missing something " and its MSG. It is absolutely crucial to the flavor as its the 4th volumetricly/listed ingredient, which means there is more MSG percentagewise before any of the spices such as garlic and onion. It is like trying to make Caesar dressing and not adding anchovies since they both bring serious umami to the dressing.

Whenever I order wings from a Restaurant , my first question is, do you use bottled ranch or do you mix it yourself? If it’s bottled ranch, I hang up or leave.
If they don’t know the difference, I don’t want to eat anything else that they might make.

I make Ranch from Greek yogurt 5%, E.V olive oil, salt, pepper , garlic, and dill. It will spoil after 3 days... so make small batches.. Takes only a few mins. Very good taste, very high in protein, none of the bad oils(canola or sunflower) that is found in Most ranch. Very healthy alternative for diabetics, and tastes great! If you want an exact recipe they google "greek yogurt ranch". The higher % fat in Greek yogurt the fuller you will feel.. So buy 2% or 5% Yogurt.

Make some "Dijon" mustard from scratch and compare it to shelf mustard, even French brands. The thing is, this stuff has been sitting on shelves in markets, and who knows how long in some container on some dock at some port of entry? If you've ever had Dijon mustard in France, even store-bought, it zings you in the nose. With Ranch dressing, even though you make it from a seasoning packet using processed ingredients like mayonnaise and buttermilk, it's going to have that fresh taste edge that the shelf stuff cannot imitate.

True believers in the gospel of Ranch know that the one true Ranch is mixed in the kitchen from the holy trinity of mayo, buttermilk, and powder from the sacred Hidden Valley.
