The level of pride my boyfriend had when coming home with a push mower he found on craigslist that was in perfect condition because 1) It was cheap and 2) He won't have to buy gas for it and 3) He knew I'd be happy that it's eco friendly.
Also, he loves it as an excuse for a work out, especially now during quarantine.

I’ve been wanting one but they’re $60 at the cheapest. I live in a townhome but the grass is growing like crazy and I don’t want bugs & rodents, plus it’s annoying long. Still thinking about it since who knows when they’ll cut it again. Seemed like Saturday’s,didn’t this weekend but I’m thinking maybe just because of Memorial weekend, hopefully.

Very true but it takes a lot of skill to do this 😅 my mom has a sowing machine that can make beautiful designs and is perfect for decorating clothes or covering holes with decorative designs.
My grandma used to over up holes with patches that had a nice picture of something. She bought them at the local market or sowing shop and especially with knee holes in jeans there great and make jeans last a lot longer!

Another tip: Home clothes. I don't know but I feel like so few people have actually heard the concept. Like, over there in US in every movie/show ever people freakin' use SHOES inside!? Or jeans.. like that's the least comfortable thing you could be wearing inside. I, first of all, leave all shoes by the door in my hall, I have home slippers. Secondly, I have old, trashy clothes (tshirts and soft pants or leggings) which are "home clothes" or "inside clothes". I only wear them inside. And I don't care if I make a mess with them, I don't care if they get holes or whatever. I wear these tshirts numerous times before washing and the same with pants. I preserve my "good clothes" for outside, for being seen in public. With this pandemic, since March I have worn like only 1-2 outside clothes going to grocery shopping or other errands. The rest of the time, my pretty clothes are neatly placed on shelves and they wait for the ban to be lifted. I not only save old crappy clothes from landfill, but I also help my newer good clothes to last longer. And my laundry basket has never been so empty! I only washed the occasional tshirt + bed lingerie, body lingerie, period pads and cotton face pads these 2 months. Definitely recommend!

I feel like this is a very subjective experience. Your way is totally fine, and I'm glad that it works well for you. But I don't find wearing jeans at home to be at all uncomfortable, and I have never cared about shoes in the house. Sometimes I actively enjoy having my shoes on. Don't know why. It just feels more like I'm dressed or something I guess. And usually if I've put on pretty good clothes for the day (as in something more than jeans and a T-shirt), I often like to keep them on as long as reasonable, because it just feels kind of like I got dressed up for nothing if I don't have them on for a while to have gotten my use out of them. I don't know, I think people just have different styles, and some people's skews comfy and some people's skews done up.

    • @alexandracolors3971
      @alexandracolors3971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

@@thatjillgirl I can totally understand that 🙂 My concern especially in my situation is that if I'm traveling by public transport for example, or sitting in any other public place I don't want to touch with the same jeans I sat in public spaces my own chairs or bed or sofas. Same with shoes. If I wore them outside they would be dirty with visible and invisible things (dirt, dust, feces maybe, who knows) and I certainly don't want that on my carpets or furniture. So like if I had home jeans or home shoes sure I could wear them inside, but otherwise I'm just not feeling ok to bring inside too much of the stuff outside, like the bacteria or viruses that might be on park benches, seats in trains etc where homeless sit (and in my country there are no clean homeless, the homeless are almost only junkies, gypsies etc which are always dirty if homeless). So yes it is subjective indeed but also kind of depends on your conditions and situation 😣

Raveena R This might not be the most sustainable thing to do, but maybe run everything you get through a couple of rounds of your normal washing/care routine to really get any products the last user might have used in it out of the fabric. By the time you’ve finished, they should be the same as your clothes, right? They’ll sell like you and have the same feel as your clothes.

Some other ways to be sustainable and save money:
•Trip planning. We try to do all of our errands when we're already out driving. For example, we go grocery shopping after having dinner with my parents
•Buying a used car instead of a brand new one
    •Only one car/household
    •Carpool with friends/family
•Doing regular maintenance on your cars. Improved gas efficiency and extends life of car
•Keeping tires inflated. Improves gas efficiency and prevents additional wear on your fires
•Having a stand up freezer/deep freezer: we buy meat on clearance, freeze leftovers, go longer between grocery shops. It helps prevent food waste
•Put whiteboard on freezers/fridges to keep lists of what's in them and what you're running low on(useful for food planning)
•keep food scrapes and use to make meat/veggie stocks or juice
•Buy cooking appliances second hand. I bought my slow cooker and instant pot second hand.
•Use appliances to cook instead of stove/oven as they use less electricity
•Unplug appliances or use powerbars to turn off power to electronics when not not in use to save power
•Organize your space so you don't double buy things

I sew the bottom shut and cut off the sleeves to use the arm holes as handles! If it is long sleeved (which I never wear) you can sew or tie the long sleeves together and you will have an over the shoulder handle. And when you sew it don't forget to turn it inside out first for a cleaner looking seam. Then bam! Reusable bag!

I do a good deal of these, though there is always room for improvement. I like the suggestions below about reusing coffee grounds. You mentioned dryer sheets and air drying. We went a step further several years ago and didn't replace our dryer when it died. I've been air drying clothes for at least a decade. I do need to replace the stove/oven but I'm waiting for it to completely die. The stove top works, not the oven or broiler.

I have used regular plates for years because I'm too cheap to buy disposable plates, etc. BUT I did buy a package of paper plates, box of utensil and plastic cups for emergency i.e. water issues or worse, someone in my house gets sick, I won't have to worry about touching their dishes etc. I dont intend to use them until either of those things happen but I do feel better having them.

I've got to shout you out, Shelbi. You're my absolute favorite content on the web right now, and I'm so thankful to have come across your channel. I'm glad I'm maturing from someone who watched trashy (pun intended), unsustainable makeup vloggers to watching a community who is mindful, practical, and caring. I love the composition of your videos, too. Most of all, I love that I don't have to worry about how you might change once your channel hits "the big time" (not that it isn't doing great already, but you're headed to larger arenas, I think). I know you'll always keep it real. I know you won't abandon your values. Now when I watch TH-cam, I feel like I am changing my reality for the better rather than just escaping it. Thank you. :) You're awesome. Also, I wanted to know, have y'all considered adopting a pup or a doggo? :) I'm thinking about it myself (already a proud cat momma of two), but if you considered it, it would be awesome to watch how you care for your pupper in a sustainable, responsible way. :)

Some really great ideas in there. Yeah my husband and I (he's a sustainability coordinator) we made 3 types of composts- one in a bin inserted into the ground, one exterior that you change the levels and the lazy way-just dumping all food waste into a pile in an area of the garden. All had worms put in the composts and they did their magic. We then waited a bit, like a month, turned the soil, planted the seeds and voila! There are so many complicated ways of "preparing" the soil but this one is the easiest and the cheapest- fool proof!

I have found that there are ways to make simple plant-based dishes more convenient. One thing I love is using a steamer basket for vegetables like kale or broccoli. Sometimes I stick a couple of carrots or potatoes (cut large-ish) into the steamer under the greens so they will be precooked for things like making a cashew cheese sauce. I also find microwaving a potato to be as convenient as getting take-out, and can be about as satisfying. I do like to put some kind of butter on my veggies which generates a little waste, but I keep the plastic tubs for leftovers. Good video, Shelbi!

I think a very overlooked part of living cheap and sustainable is making gifts. When you go to a party and are expected to bring a gift, oftentimes you can make one from stuff you have at home instead of buying something.
If you're very creative: art, jewelry, homemade notebooks, handmade clothes or accessories, bags, etc
If you (and they) have a green thumb: propagate some plants, maybe give leftover seeds from your garden or harvested seeds (lots of flowers and veggies give seed if you let them)
Or if you're good in the kitchen: cookies, pies or cakes, a special bread, even alcohol (idk if that's allowed where you live tho), or herb mixes, pancake mixes, write a recipe book
I hope some of you got a nice idea from this inexhaustive list :D
I personally have sown bags, made cake, a pyjama, upcyled t-shirts and made a lot of art for friends :)

I shop for fruit and veg at the market instead of the grocery store. The big grocery stores select only the "perfect" looking produce, meaning that the rest gets put in the bin!! The market is also straight from farmers so it's supporting them more directly and it's WAY cheaper. I recently had to start shopping at the grocery store again (due to miss rona) and I'm shocked by how expensive everything is. I live alone so my shopping at the market usually costs about $10 a week (AUS) and now it's around $30+! Seriously, it's a big difference!

I use my phone and tablet a lot as well, but sometimes I prefer to quickly scribble things down. You can scan the pages if you want to save the info.

I love these suggestions!! one thing I’m conflicted though is about repairing tech - I had my iPhone for around four years and the sound stopped working but when I went to see about repairs, it was only about a hundred more to get a new phone. I try to repair most of my tech but I feel getting a new phone to hopefully use 5+ years instead of paying the same to keep repairing my tech over time.. just wondering about your thoughts on this, I know companies keep trying to lower prices on tech to influence purchasing over repairing

Have you considered a scooter or moped? I had one for years and it is so much more efficient than a car for single person journeys. Insurance, road tax, fuel and parking for less than £1000 per year!
