  • In this episode we cover one of the most quintessentially 90's shows of all-time: The X-Men Animated Series.
    With it's earworm of a theme song and it's chronological approach to storytelling it helped to bring Marvel to the forefront of pop culture and turn it into the juggernaut it is today.

    What i loved most about this series was that it played like a greatest hits. In adaping the comics it trimmed all of the fat so much so it impaired my ability to read the massively convoluted cluterfuck of the comics. It kept the mystique of Wolverine, cable, Gambit and Apocalypse without over explaning thier backgrounds. No need fot Madelyn prior. ;-)

    My son (11) and I have been watching this over the past several weeks. It's a really solid show. No other show except Batman: TAS really delved into as many mature themes, so it was a ballsy show which, honestly, probably couldn't be made today without offending PC censors. It's a definite two thumbs up from us!
    Last year, I saw what my kid was watching on Disney XD and was mortified at the poor quality, so I resolved to introduce him to GOOD animation. We've watched the entire DCAU, X-Men, Spider-Man (nineties), Space Ghost, Jonny Quest and several others. Now my son can't understand why they can't make cartoons anymore. I tell him I don't know.

    Just wanted to say that yes, while X-Men sold the most comics of a single issue, that just glosses over a whole lot of other reasons why it did. Being popular helped, but it was also released in the middle of the comic speculation bubble, being branded as Issue #1, and having 4(!) Variant covers. All this means that while it sold a lot, that was more because individual collectors were buying the issue in bulk in the hopes they could resale them for profit later (They didn't.)

    "The errors almost cost AKOM their contract", which is very interesting, because in the case of "Batman:TAS", their errors DID INDEED cost AKOM their contract for that show. They've done good, even great work from time to time, but every one of their productions is characterized by sloppy line work - in virtually every frame. From "Spiral Zone" to "Transformers" to "Robocop". Look, I would never take love of this "X-Men" away from the fans. My interest was in good animation above all else, the reason I watch animation in the first place, even if everything else was wack. I never got into this show because the animation was pretty evidently terrible, but I understand there are plenty other reasons to recommend.

I actually took part in a debate my 2nd grade teacher proposed of "Who would win: X-men or Power Rangers?" (X-men, obviously.) Pryde of the x-men is a phenomenal episode (We'll ignore Wolverine's terrible Australian accent.) I was lucky enough to find it on VHS at some point in the 90s. Still no idea where I got it, but it is a treasured artifact. Now...if I only had a VCR.

    I'm a bit surprised you didnt mention the main reason the Xmen 1st season cartoon was so successful..the cards..the collectors Xmen cards...along with POGS those cards were the reason to even go to school to see what cards you could trade w your friends..and kept you watching the cartoon..I remember the infinity gauntlet card was highly sought after..that and Psychlock..although I think the latter was more of a demand due to art design and young hormonal boy issues lol

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrJon76 Agreed, but to be fair, maintaining that level of quality for an extended series would have been stupid expensive back then. I mean, with today's technology it would be super easy, barely an inconvenience but there's a real financial reason why animation from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's was so simple and cheap looking - that was the best they could afford.
      I mean, maybe there's an alternate universe where Pryde of the X-Men was more successful and convinced some studio executives to authorize funding for an entire series of that style and quality, but that would also mean that X-Men series didn't have that rocking, pulse pounding theme song, and that's not a universe I want to live in. I'd rather have slightly lower quality animation coupled with that amazing soundtrack that everyone remembers than higher quality animation with a lower quality soundtrack that might be forgotten in a decade.

    • @MrJon76
      @MrJon76 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dargonhuman Pryde of the X-men's theme was rocking! Kids who were exposed to the '92 series first remember it more fondly because it evokes nostalgic childhood memories! I was 16 in 1992; I remember far better renditions of the X-men so that cartoon pissed me off for many reasons!

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I remember a 2012 Comic Vine article's mention of Marvel trying to convince the IRS that the X-Men were non-human characters; this way, they could pay less taxes on toys manufactured in other countries. Instead this sparked an online debate on whether mutants should be considered human and thus, enjoy human rights.

    It's funny, that Pride of the X-Men pilot aired so rarely that for a long time I thought scenes from it were from my dreams, and I mixed parts of that episode in with parts from the [almost equally rare] episodes of Spiderman and His Amazing Friends that guest starred the X-Men. It's crazy to think how it was only a couple years between when that pilot aired and when the 90's cartoon premiered; back then it seemed like a lifetime

    In the X-MEN world, people hate mutants,... mainly because they are different. Yet, they live in the same world as other Marvel characters. Therefore, there should always be someone who says to maybe, ... let's say The Hulk,...get away from me, you mutant freak! Or say that to the Fantastic Four! Or to the Submariner! Or to Electro, or The Sandman! ECT. (Although they aren't mutants)...those who hate mutants, don't care if your born that way,...but they hate because they are different! Therefore, other heroes or even villains should be discriminated against! And it wouldn't be only on the X-MEN show.

    For my money, this series is still the definitive take on these characters to this day, especially when it comes to the brilliant voices used for the likes of Beast, Wolverine, and especially Gambit (still the coolest X-Man of all as far as I'm concerned, although I do have a soft spot for the likes of Colossus too...!); plus it was the starting point for a 90s Marvel Cartoon Universe that would also help to define such characters as Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk, and my personal favourites, the Fantastic Four (which itself provided the definitive voice for Ben Grimm, the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing, but I digress...) for me, long before the movies got a proper hold of them...'Nuff Said! Excelsior (or X-Celsior if you prefer...!).
