  • I bought a Jaguar X Type diesel from a Geoff Follower and suddenly life started to feel more upmarket. After I'd found my wallet, I found a whole load of classic cars including a Jaguar MK2 and Aston Martin DB4....
    Let's take a look at some of these cars whilst learning more about the Jaaaaag.... Is it the cheapest, most overlooked and most economical luxury car of all?

    Remember my old boss buying one of these. He was worried about the service intervals on the Jag (quite a bit shorter than the equivalent Mondeo). To seal the deal, the dealer promised him a years free servicing.... Not a number of free services, a whole year's worth of free servicing My old boss did at least 2,000 miles a week, every time he took it for a service, he left with a cheery "See you next month!"

    The X Type represented so many firsts for Jaguar such as the first diesel, first front wheel drive, first transverse engine, first factor build estate, four wheel drive... The list goes on. That one looks fantastic, have fun.

    I'm looking forward to this one, my mates wife bought one and he ribbed her unmercifully about the "Mondeo in a Party Dress" thing, tbh he hated it he's a mechanic and thought he'd be forever working on it, he was right by the way.

    About 15 years ago I bought a 2006 2.2D and it was brilliant. It even had climate control and built in sat nav (useless but there you are!). It handled really well, accelerated well and excellent mpg. The only reason I got rid of it was at the time I was doing a lot of stop-start driving, and in the end traded it in for a bmw 330D auto. To this day, I wish I had kept either/both these cars as they were both cheap to run, reliable and went like stink.

    Watch out for the rust on these, they are terrible for it. I agree, nothing wrong with the whole Mondeo underpinnings, the Mondeo is a great car and drives great, so those who say it’s just a Mondeo in a frock are either Mondeo haters or Jaguar haters…. or both.

    Nice one! I've got the 2.2D Sovereign (auto), fully loaded, from the same year (final facelift). No leaper though😞. I keep it in showroom condition, and just have it serviced regularly, and for that it's never let me down in the 10+ years I've had it. Other than regular servicing, a few tyres and a battery, no issues ever, and still on the original exhaust! Oh I lie, I had to change a side-light bulb 8 years ago. Marvellous cars! I'm looking forward to your road-trip with The MacMaster, another fave of mine! I hope you pass close to Plymouth!

      The MK3 Mondeo was one of THE best, if not THE best handling car in its class.
      Oddly it does unfortunately suffer from rot more than the MK3 Mondy, mainly due to Jaguar packing the front end of the sills with an absorbent material so the sills rot from the inside outwards.

    I have a X-type 2.2D manual, Estate car, 6 speed. Owned for 3 years so far, it is my second estate. Both have been brilliant cars.
    An old boy in my block of flats has a '02', saloon which he has owned for 15 years, he loves it, and will keep it until one of them dies first.

    I had a 2.2 diesel S Type Estate which I bought in the UK for £5300 as seen, undriven, low milage one owner. Drove it in France ,where I was living, at the time. I cost me one rear caliper over 3 years and used no fuel. Part ex for a Jag XE 2.0T Prestige petrol with personal plate still on, got £2500 for the X type against £17500 for the other with 11500 miles on the clock. It is a great car if a bit frightening in dynamic mode. Dose 47 mpg on the motorway

      They are prone to rotting on the sills. Not the best version to buy, they suffer the same as most land rovers of the same period where dirt gets into the lower trim and then water builds up and then it rots away without anyone ever checking.
      Also the front bumper bar (long piece of steel behind the bumper) also rots away and this also holds up the radiator, air cooler and air conditioning radiator and once it rots away any small jolt can have those components drop to the ground......
      Beautiful car, I had an X type, but unless you know what to look for, what to keep clean and what essential repairs to make and what essential checks to make, I'd give them a swerve.

    I had the 2.2D X-type Sport in silver for five years and liked it's looks and lovely thick leather seats. But wasn't keen on the rock hard suspension having come from a Citroen Xantia that would glide over every pot hole and road irregularity. The manual six speed gearbox was good, but the clutch very heavy and the engine had a lot of chain clatter on tick over, especially if you had the air-con engaged. Also spent out thousands on it over the five years that I had it as it wasn't exactly very relievable and finally lost faith in it altogether when the turbo failed in 2021 and then the replacement 11 months later, followed by an injector which destroyed the oil and water pumps in 2022. Finally let it go in Nov 2023 shortly before picking up my new Dacia Jogger.

One of the best cars I’ve ever had and look back with a great deal of fondness and it always makes me smile when I see one on the road now. The only slightly negative thing about it was when you stood on the throttle in would barf a big old cloud of black smoke out the back! Not very sophisticated 😂😂

    Nice one Geoff, i had a 2002 version 2.1 litre petrok auto. Had to let it go for scrap last year. Due to the MOT failing very badly. Look out for worn and rusty sills as they seem to be a bugbare for these cars. Also roll bar linkage and shock absorbers. I'd definately have another one regardless.

    • @bonglandgreg
      @bonglandgreg ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Front bumper bar that also acts as radiator fixing points are prone to rot and drop vital components to the floor...... auxiliary belt attachment points also fail causing the belt to shear the clutch in half. Roll bar linkage, yea, had that as well, so watch out for shaking at around 50mph that disappears around 60 and then reappears above 70.
      Check the parking sensors, keep all esg components clean.
      I was lucky, all the sills were clean and then resealed.

  • @nitishk9
    @nitishk9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Having owned a very similar 2008 X400 but with a black interior, for just an year and a half, it's not at all a Mondeo. They just introduced the 2.0 litre and 2.2 litre Turbo-Diesel engines in its last models, to make them a bit more affordable, that happened to be the same engines featured in the Ford Transit, Mondeo and the Land Rover Defender Puma. The 4-cylinder Turbo-Diesel engine, even the 2.0 litre version, has performance similar and even better than the Normally-Aspirated Petrol V6 engines. The 2.0 litre engines in the X-Type are known to have produced more than 400hp with proper aftermarket tuning. I have actually been enjoying every opportunity to drive it, as it's the lightest and most responsive in its class amongst Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, and it gets all the respect that a Jaguar commands. Matter of fact, it's the last Jaguar to feature all the traditional Jaguar design cues and it was preferred by Her Majesty as her last car.

My point is the garage said to get a replacement secondhand car she would have to spend a minimum of £13000 pounds to get a replacement as good as the old Yaris . So dear Geoff who is kidding who , obviously she will have her car repaired . Which the garage actually said would last another five years , but why are these people saying you need to spend so much money . When you prove time and again this is just not the case . I've driven a few of them and they don't feel like Jags, but then my view of what a Jag is is the XJ or XK. So the "doesn't feel" thing is entirely subjective. They did rust quite badly on the sills.

Headlights a real pain and of course the rusty sills spelled the end (despite being replaced once already). I remember in 2005.when I was a recruitment consultant. I had a Calibra Turbo 4x4 and the transfer box went on me, I had to go and visit a client in Norwich from the office in Watford and my boss had just taken delivery of his new company car, a gold (colour chosen by him) 2.2 diesel one of these.
    Due to my Calibra Turbo being at the mechanic next to the office, I actually drove his gold Mondeo before him, quite some distance too. Lol

    Not convinced the X Type is based on a gen 3 Mondeo, that car came out in 2007, the X type was nearly a done deal by then. Gen 2 mondeo came out in 2001, same time as the X Type so unless they were developed together the X type may even be based on the Gen 1 Mondeo.

      Think it really depends on how you drive. I've had 2 mk 3 mondeos with 2 litre diesel engines, both did 55+ mpg, even more on long runs and they get better with age. Currently run a mk 4 estate, again with 2 litre diesel. A heavier car than the mk 3, but even this does 55mpg in the summer, slightly less in winter. I find if you keep the revs around 2000rpm they are at their best. No need to redline them, as they have so much low down torque.

      Now most are realising that it was wrong to do so because it was holding its own, although it shared a platform of a Mondeo MKIII and other Ford Parts and yet there are many cars out there that share parts across the board.
      The Jaguar X Type will become a collectors car and prices will sky rocket, in the future and those who slated it under a Ford Mondeo MKIII label, will be scratching their heads.
