    I never cared it was based on a Ford. I was a kid when it was in production, and I wanted one. I loved jaguars of the 2000s. Those designs, especially the interiors, are still some of the most beautiful ever made.

    I had an X-Type and loved the car. With the wide wheelbase, low center of gravity, wide low profile tires, it just hugged the road. The leather was definitely the best ever, high quality. I have never been financially in a position to buy a premium Jaguar of today, I am forever grateful that FORD provided this opportunity to me.

    I currently own an x-type, and I have to say it is the best car I have ever owned I bought mine for 2,000 and just had to fix a coolant leak. It's a pretty quick car really comfortable and a decent head turner in smaller towns. I never thought I would be a part of the Jaguar Coventry but I have to say it's an honor.

    I've had my 2002 Xtype for quite a few years now and I love it. It is one of 3 Jaguars that I own and it serves as a reliable daily driver. It only has 55,000 Kms on it. The paint and interior show no sign of wear, even though it is 20 years old, a testament to the quality of the materials. I still get a lot of compliments on it.

    In Feb 2009 my mother bought the last new 2008 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 from our local dealer. I inherited the car from her when she passed in 2016. I still have the car. It has 57,000 miles, looks like new, and has never needed any repair -- just its routine maintenance. I credit its reliability in part to its use of Ford electronic components. Thanks for your historical review of this much maligned, highly undervalued car. It's still fun to drive and still gets second looks and positive comments from passer-bys in the parking lots.

    The X-Type really got a rough treatment from the press with the whole Mondeo thing. Like you said, by the time Jag was finished with it, there was only 19% of the Mondeo left. And even then - the Mondeo is was a good car.

Second, the last Ford Fusion (no Mercury Milan this time, as Mercury had bit the dust) was, AFAIK, was an American-ized version of the then current Mondeo. The Fusion bit the dust, due to Ford's concentration on building trucks and SUV's for the American market; the Mondeo itself is set to go away after the 2022 model year.

    I bought my 2005 X-type, in British Racing Green, with 25K miles, five years ago. I love everything about it. The old-school styling, the plush interior, the ride, the handling, the all wheel drive (it’s amazing in ice & snow)…it’s is a truly beautiful machine that still turns heads today. I had one for about fifteen years - excellen car, with upgraded (by me) suspension, using German parts, it drove like a true sports car (for less money). The look also was very elegant. I would not praise the cabin...could be better. Still liked the wood and leather, just the overall design was not as elegant as some other British or Italian high end cars. Would not be too expensive to do it better, as the materials used were good enough.

  • @katywalker8322
    @katywalker8322 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    We had a 2.5 X Type. In many ways a good car, and ours was reliable. Couple of rear suspension links, and it ate headlight bulbs. 2 minor odd problems (brake lights coming on when you pressed the clutch - fixed by shimming a brake switch; central locking played up which turned out to be the tiny flap over the ignition switch key slot sticking, and the central locking thinking the key was still in the ignition). Very comfy seats, decent size boot and the 4wd was good.
    Down sides was that the chassis was very much for a cruiser and not sporty which didn’t suit me. Being a hefty 4wd saloon it was heavy and drank fuel (28mpg was about the average, short journeys would give about 20mpg, best of 40mpg sitting at 56mph on a long journey). The gear change was way too heavy and slow. It felt like there was a mismatch between the engine that wanted to be revved and the gearbox and heavy flywheel that were ponderous.
    Would have been a far better car with a bit of weight saving (including a lot of weight off the flywheel - and make it a normal rather than dual mass flywheel).
    It was replaced with a BMW 3 series (E46). The Jaguar was a better built car and more reliable than the BMW (which was a very average car at a premium price).

Start with an Opel, which themselves are basically an experiment in seeing how cost reduced and poor quality a car can be and still have non-car enthusiasts buy it, and then tack on every wagon-queen family truckster style american grandma attractant... awful.
      But the Mondeo was a great leap forward for ford of europe, and by the time the X Type came about had gone through a decade of intensive improvement. So it's the difference between starting from an awful car and an excellent one.

I never got the issue with it sharing Mondeo parts, as it was quite different from the Mondeo, 2.5L and 3.0L engines in the North American market were well done for their time, had all wheel drive, and the 2.5L version could be had with a manual transmission which was cool. The interior may not have been up to XJ and S-type standard, but it was considerably cheaper than those cars, and it was pretty nice compared to a Mondeo, Contour, or Fusion. I've driven the Mondeo from this era and currently own the X-type, they don't drive or feel the same at all, the X-Type setup is just so much tighter and it eats up long journeys compared to the Mondeo. The Mondeo was reliable enough and cheap enough, but the two cars a leap years apart in terms of driving experience.

    Owned a 2002 Adriatic Blue 2.5 with a 5-Speed years ago and absolutely loved it. It was soooooooo good in the snow as I lived in New Hampshire at the time. Only thing that was terrible was anytime it needed parts it was big $$$ as most of the parts came directly from the UK. Interior was small but very gorgeous , two tone exotic woods EVERYWHERE, cream colored plush carpets and leather. It was a nice car with fancy features like automatic sensing wipers and a built in phone! I do miss it!

    I bought a Mondeo wagon with 2.5l V6 few weeks ago and I really like it. Yesterday I saw a X type wagon for sale and thought: I completely forgot these were a thing. I maybe could have bought a Jag. And up until a few minutes ago I as many thought these were just Mondeo with a different body. Out of those 19% of shared parts I think engines are the main thing (even though I think my Mondeo 2.5 has around 30HP less than the one in X type). And the supercharged version actually surprised me and I'll probably have a little look at it.

  • @AntoekneeDE
    @AntoekneeDE 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video, but not quite true to say it was based on the Mondeo,; CD132 was platform developed with a cycle plan that included both cars, the Mondeo was the lead programme, X400 followed soon after. I believe the CD132 took a start point from earlier Mazda. This is pretty usual for any larger manufacturers; you spend a year developing the architecture to encompass all of the models it is anticipated to spawn before beginning work on specific vehicle programmes. Given the job one date on the Mondeo (usually referred to as Mk3 in the UK despite the Mk2 being a large facelift of the Mk1) was around 2000, it's own development would have kicked off around 1996 and the architecture around 1995, and even back then, it would have been intended two spawn the two cars at least...
    So, is it based on a Ford? Well it's a predominantly FMC led platform, but that was a group that included Mazda, and Jag would very much have had an input into what that architecture needed to be to deliver the attributes of their compact saloon. As mentioned, it didn't even have a common wheelbase with the Mondeo sibling.
    The bigger criticisms are around whether the looks and target market, this caught a few people out in the run up to 2000 when firms tended to go retro or very conservative. Had the Jag looked more like the later XF, maybe it would have been another story, but most other manufacturers had a D segment saloon that looked like their F-segment offering and did something more unique with their E-segment at the time; the 3 series looked like a shrunken 7 series, the 5 looked more unique, the A4 looked like a smaller A8 whilst their A6 was a bit droopy, and the C-class was like a small S-class when then E-c;lass went weird with bog eyed on an otherwise square car. This was pretty much what Jag did, shrunk the design of the X308 and upcoming X350 to a point, whilst the S-type was the unusual looking one.
    On the inside, whilst there are some parts found in Volvos, the switchgear was shared with current and upcoming Jag products, the overhead console would survive until the last X150 XK, the stalks were used in DB9, the infotainment found its way into the next gen X350 XJ and heavily updated X202 S-type; there was nothing inside that you would touch or feel that showed it to be connected to Ford. It was actually pretty state of the art, only to be held back then by looking like anything but modern...
    Early road tests were very positive, and it was only really when sales didn't materialise that fickle journos started to turn on it. The engine range at launch was pretty woeful, starting with the 2.5 and 3.0 which were sweet enough, but completely left the entry level 316, 318, 320 and 323 customers without an offering, which was probably to preserve the fact that at launch was 100% AWD, and not only that, but rear-biased, to lend it some real credibility as a rival in the class (where as most Audis were FWD, but didn't have the 'drivers car' heritage of a Jag or BMW). Jag would have been better off including a 2.0 zetec based 4 pot that shimming down a V6, especially as the 2.1 ended up a very different beast to the 2.5 and 3.0. The 2.5 and 3.0 were based on the V6 block, but with totally unique heads, valvegear, intakes etc etc, but the later diesels were just 'refined' (i.e. calibration and NVH updates), this would have been a better approach. Given the choice between the prestige of AWD/RWD against a V6, if I care about driving, I'd pick the former. Nevertheless, the estate came late, as did the 4 pot diesel that made up most of the european market at the time.
    In many respects, the platform choice was ahead of its time, more through luck than judgement possibly, but you achieve more as an OEM by sharing platforms sideways rather than trying to make them shared from the lowest to highest models that then require scaleability and for the lowest car to carry weight and cost for the highest, and the highest possibly having an attribute price of sharing parts with the lowest. Today, the Merc A-class and its many offshoots (B, CLA, GLA etc) are shared in origin with Nissan, with Renault-Nissan powertrains. BMW have unsuccessful tried tie-ins with other manufacturers, but still led to a sharing of UKL1/2 between MINI and it's 1 series (including saloon), X1, X2, 2AT, and Audi of course for years had the A4 and Passat linked until the latter moved to transverse, whilst the platform under the A3, including now a saloon, has been shared with too many cars to list, but highlights include Golf, Tiguan, Scirocco, Octavia, Leon, none of which has ever hurt the 4-ringed models. A slightly disingenuous comparison because these all typically sit a rung lower in the model range than the X-type rivals did, but all are now around the same size as the higher level forebears, whils the transverse powertrain actually acts to liberate interior space and can be easier to electrify, and sales of these older style saloons have begun to wobble.
    The sad end note is that many years later, Jaguar delivered a car that many have argued the X-type should have been, the XE, it was longitudinal engine, RWD or AWD, larger range of engines (to begin with), up-to-date design (interior wasn't great until the facelift but it wasn't retro), and it shared an aluminium architecture and hardware with cars in the class above... and it's never sold as well as X-type.

    Unpopular comment incoming... I know you've done the Cougar before, but you stopped before the CDW27-based MkVIIII, which was also based on an (earlier) Mondeo.
    I only mention theis because I have worked on a number of X-Types and it's interesting to see how Ford used the platform commonality but massaged it into somethig so completely different.
    In fact, any re-engineered (not badge-engftineered) cars you want to do would ne fantastic.

    Fair play for not pronouncing it as JagWar!
    I've got the 2.2D model from 2009/10 and I really like it. It's like a mixture of classic and modern, and the fact that it's like a tamed down version of the XJ means a lot of people aren't quite sure what to think of it.
    The hardcore classic Jagheads will hand-wave it away, whereas the non-car people think "omg, a JAG!", while the people that own one just sit in the middle, happy with a pretty decent car that didn't break the bank.

    As you explained the X type was far from that and nowadays there are far more "rebadged" luxo mobiles than the X type, but they seem to get a pass.
    Bad rep and also the lack of a Diesel with an Automatic and a 4 cyl gas engine at launch

    I am British and a big jaguar fan. I currently have a 04 diesel X type, yes the diesel isn't the quietest engine out there it's built proof, if serviced regularly and is extremely economical. We have a problem here with the trio that was top gear. We have a generation of driver's that got it's entire car knowledge from there, every word spoken is taken as gospel. I find that most people who knock the X type have never owned one. It's the same thing with Alfa Romeo. The X type is so cheap to buy here it's ridiculous. The amount of standard toy's is endless . It drives as good today as when it left the factory. Service costs are very good due in no small way to some of the ford running gear, a chassis that won ford great reviews, but you know all this already . I'm happy that it wasn't seen as a young man's sports car. Jaguar should keep it's core values and produce quality vehicles, leave Porsche and BMW etc to develop sport's saloon's. Jaguar cars will always be a classic.

I think they got a bum rap.. they weren't sporty cars, but they were comfortable cars and we didn't have any major problems with either. I have this car and that same blue color. I was sort of excited when I bought it until I started driving it around more and getting hit with very expensive repair bills trying to get it back into the great condition it is now. It doesn’t drive as quick or nibble as I was expecting at all. In fact it drives like any other normal car like a Nissan Altima. I love the sound it makes when you hit the gas hard. The engine sounds like the name of the car and animal, a Jaguar. It actually roars. Even though the style of it is beautiful and fancy, it looks too much like a Ford. It just does. It’s not exactly a roomy car either. It does terrible on gas and only takes premium. I guess I’m happy with it but it just wasn’t what I thought it would be before I bought it. I get lots of compliments all the time though. People can’t believe mine is a 2002.

    Maybe I've missed the point this whole time but whenever I heard the mondeo comments about the X-type, I always thought "isn't that a compliment?" The mondeo was always a very competent, borderline class-leading car. Certainly could do a lot worse than having it as a platform, even ignoring all the differences between the two cars.
    Basically when the X-type was new, calling it a mondeo was a way for people to feel like they're getting one over on someone who was successful enough to buy one. "YoU KnOw ThAt'S a MoNdEOoOo" says the Renault Clio driver seeing his boss drive past in a new X-type.
