  • Hey guys! Just wanted to make a video about my first piece of analog gear! I recently picked up a Wes Audio Dione (wesaudio.com/_d...) and I've been seriously loving how it sounds!
    This video covers the setup with the UAD Apollo twin audio interface, routing within Ableton live, as well as some sound tests on my modern progressive trance productions. If you're only interested in the A/Bs, go to 9:15
    Hope this is interesting and helpful! If you have any questions or comments leave them down below! Would love to hear what you think of what you're hearing here!

    Taylor: "...I'm making a quick video..."
    Also Taylor: 20 minute video
    Hahaha, I absolutely love this! That is SO sick that the hardware connects directly through USB so you only need to make adjustments the computer. This makes me want to purchase more analog gear for myself! 🙌

    Thanks for this video Taylor. One suggestion, you can rename inputs and outputs in the Ableton preferences. I use the input and output labeling for my Wesaudio _Promethius and _Dione. Wesaudio makes very quality gear.

      Very interesting video, fellow nerd. 😉
      This reminds me of the Acces Virus TI2 and the TC Electronic Powercore I had. While those systems were but fancy external DSPs, I liked tweaking stuff ITB that influenced everything OTB and vice versa. ♥️
      Most I know, like Wolfgang Gartner, who used analog summing for a while, for instance, all came back to doing everything (more hassle free) ITB.
      But this should have the best of both worlds, so it will be interesting to see (and listen to) how you and your lovely new acquisition will develop over time.
      Was fun watching, thank you. 😊🎶

      @@company-income Dude--yes, exactly. Honestly one of the biggest selling point was the digital/plugin integration. I would never want to deal with hardware recall and coming out of the mix position to tweak knobs. I really think that what Wes Audio is doing with this workflow is the future!

    thoughts on the other Wes audio gear - Mimas and EQ's? Dione sounds like it gives it that true analog sound I can't get from my plugins. Great review - thanks!

      Hi my friend! I haven't yet had the chance to use the Mimas or the Hyperion/Prometheus, however, my experience with the Dione over the last month has been nothing short of amazing. I really do think Wes Audio is leading the pack with their digital/analog hybrid model--I really can't overstate how nice the digital recall is and not having to lean out of your mixing position is. Plus, it sounds amazing. More Wes Audio gear is definitely on my list!

    One note, suggest panning channel 1 hard left and 2 hard right for proper stereo. Or link the UAD channels and it does it automatically

    Great video brotha as I am looking to purchase one in the next couple of weeks. My main question is: Do you have to use a Titan Chassis or can you use any brand for the Dione?

    • @taylortorrenceofficial
      @taylortorrenceofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ian! Thanks for getting in touch brotha! You don't need to use the Titan rack! WES Audio says the Dione will fit in more than 90% of the 500 series chassis available on the market, and if you fit it into a non-titan rack, you'll just have to connect the USB from the front of the Dione.
      There are a couple of racks on the market where you need to remove a screw or that might not fit--check out Page 6 of the manual for their note on the ones that don't fit! wesaudio.com/uploads/manuals/WesAudio_dione_manual.pdf

    Guess it doesn't really matter but i am curious why you used 2 instances of the ext audio effext instead of just using 1. Yoy can route out and back in with 1 instance.

      I do this now and you’re right! But for some reason it wasn’t working at the time I made this video 🤷‍♂️ haha

  • @dpinskey

    I don’t have the Titan chassis as of yet, but so close to pulling the trigger on buying one. I do however own a Wes Audio Calypso module that I have housed in a Lindell 500 series rack just for power and then have the Calypso connected via ADAT to my RME Digiface interface and then connected via DB25 to quarter inch jacks to the analog outboard gear I want to use to color my DAW elements. The Calypso unit is designed to connect to a special internal connector on the ten-slot of the Titan chassis that is supposed to allow slots 1-8 pass audio in and out of the DAW through that connector and then through the ADAT connections. Sounds like a fantastic way to build out my studio integration but the big question I have that keeps me from making the purchase is whether this introduces any latency into the signal chain and I’m wondering if you or any of your subscribers have added the Titan+Calypso combination into your/their setups and what kind of round trip latency measurements they/you might be getting. I cannot find any documentation regarding this anywhere on the Wes Audio site or in any of the gear blogs that have been talking about this setup. If there were to be enough latency introduced into my signal path with housing the calypso in the Titan chassis then I am thinking ai would prefer to house the Calypso unit in something like the Cranborne 500R8 and connect any ng500 units I might buy via USB so as to be able have zero latency monitoring via the Cranborne rack’s integrated monitoring system.

    why do you use 2 audio effects, when you can just use one and get the return from "audio from" (first ext audio effect). Easier and you can use the dry/wet knob, That's how use it.

    • @taylortorrenceofficial
      @taylortorrenceofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Markus! Thanks for your comment! The routing you're describing doesn't work for me, I tried it that way. Makes sense but in my setup, this was the only way it works. I'm happy with this method though! :)

    Hey Taylor, thanks for your video!
    it will be interesting to see how to apply the Dione on bus compression for stems ( bass, kick, leads, etc ), would you recommend this ?
    what is your current breakup on stems mixing, do you think a 500 series setup will benefit for modern EDM music ( realtime pre mastering ? )
    what would be the perfect setup for you if you had to go full analog for the mixing bus ( pre master )? for EDM/trance, thx

    • @taylortorrenceofficial
      @taylortorrenceofficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      To this date I still only use it on the mix bus (the master channel). I think this sort of compressor (VCA) is best there

  • @viociarnau1670

    Hey for this type of music would you still keep this compressor or would you consider to get the new model from the same company- Wes Audio RHEA?
    I am into the neo classical type of music and all l want is like “a 3-D feeling” and I’d like to see your opinion:- which one, should I get DIONE or RHEA…- ?
    Any suggestions…? … and maybe you can explain the main differences in between those two wonderful Wes Audio Units… Thanks

    • @taylortorrenceofficial
      @taylortorrenceofficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vio--I don't own a RHEA so I can't speak directly on the differences. The RHEA is a Vari-Mu compressor while the Dione is a VCA compressor that acts similar to SSL's G compressor. They have different characteristics. I'd start with researching the difference in how those two types of compression function!

    How do you setup the input / output with many modules ? I have a Focusrite 18i20 3 as starting point in my setup.

      @@taylortorrenceofficial Oh congratulations! 😊😊
      For my part, I received my Wes Audio equipment and I am very satisfied with it too (Titan, Hyperion, Rhea and Mimas). I love the remote control, presets etc. it's awesome and i don't understand why companies like moog don't use this system!!!
      I have a big crush on the Mimas, a kind of Fet (he takes over the operation) very nice.
      The Rhea is more difficult to apprehend (for me). The THD is sometimes too rich but fortunately we can manage that. In my opinion it is a compressor to use when you want to add a lot of body, as if the average level rises. More In the face.

    Is there a specific reason for inserting a second External Audio Effect plugin, you can select Audio from in the same plugin, then why do that in the second plugin ?

      Hey Hassan--two years ago when I filmed this video, it would not work with one External Audio Effect. In 2022 it now works with one as you describe. Maybe this was a change made in Ableton, I'm not sure. But one instance does work now!
