WesAudio is gold...I sold my 1176 and the LA-2a limiter and bought 3 MIMAS , 1 DIONE 500 and the BETA76..... so basically now i have a vintage limiter, 3 distressors and one SSL comp for 1/3 of money of their real cost )) How cool is that?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just added the Dione to my Titan rack alongside my Hyperion. Haven’t begun to mix much with it yet but it is so much different than mixing through my Mpressos + Hyperion mix duo - by the way, which I love - but now I am excited to work with the automations and instant digital recall of the Dione/Hyperion setup. It’s definitely going to take me a little bit to readjust sonically which sounds very different than the signal chain I had been working with. Who knows, maybe I won’t like it as much or maybe even more. There might be times I reach back to an old friend and find myself wanting the flavors I was able to pull out of the mix with the mpressors or I might just add those flavors I love to a drum or guitar bus. Possibilities abound and I’m ready to create.
allways worth watching! just moving away from the 4001 towards Wes... i wish somebody could make me a precise Mattblack faceplate to the Wes collection
How cool is that! Drums and rock music sound great. I like the THD high option a lot. Maybe not so suitable for EDM, as you highlighted, but it's a must-have gear.
check out the new A designs finesse, im planning on getting a dione and one of them in the future both digitally controlled analog for my 2 buss peeeeerfect :)
Hi David. First of all I was totally blown by your channel. I have watched like 40 of your videos just like in a week. The best content on youtube! Thank you so much for what you're doing. I have learned more than in the past...decade. I'm thinking of getting my first VCA compressor. I felt in love when I first heard that thick low end that a SSL G Bus comp provide on edm tracks, but the possibility of getting a hybrid hardware/plugin operated from the WesAudio is something just out of this world. Do you consider Dione to be as a good sounding as SSL G Bus comp? Is it still worth buying it in 2020, or there are some other newer great stuff? Keep up the great work & stay healthy in those crazy times David, Best regards, Astro
Thank you 👍 in a word, yes, that's why I have it (altho' now I have the bigger brother too) instead of the SSL which I had, arguably is more ssl than the ssl as this has the Gold DBX VCA, but also depends which SSL, there have been many, many revisions. It's worth buying? For sure, there is better? Yes, the NGbus that I now have, but it's also twice the price
@@mixbustv Hey, I really appreciate your reply! I heard the Mynx version of G comp and this is what I particularly had in mind. It adds such a sweet thump on the low end. I was wondering if Dione was even better sounding. Do I need a _TITAN with 10 slots to run and automate this babe, or there are some smaller boxes, let's say 3 slots for the beginning? If so what rack would you recommend? I'm also wondering what kind of saturation it has? What's the difference between it's sat and let's say the Neve's 542? Still so much to learn from your videos. When I'll go through all of them I'm propably going to get an exclusive content too! Wish I could buy a MixbusTv T-shirt. So happy to have a new favourite youtube channel :-) God bless you.

Nice vid bro but can you please level match next time.... I would like to really hear what’s it’s doing and not just think it’s better cuz it’s louder... I love this channel by the way🔥
I watch this video for the fifth time now over the course of multiple years 🤔. I guess I have to finally buy this beast at some point 😂💪🎶🎧. Ciao, David!
David, I currently have a couple of hardware SSL style compressors which sound great, I was wondering (love the recall) since it is digitally controlled, is it able to act as dual mono or just stereo?
I have bought the Dione and love it😊👍. I'm using it on my Mixbuss, but would this unit be great fit for like parallel comping on the drums, or is a FET style compressor, like an 1176 a better choice for that?
All these years later and I'm getting one - David is the THD mode able to provide strong enough saturation to tame a few peaks/nominal level? Or more just a colour
Hi David Would this stereo bus compressor also be good to track mono guitar with? Would it also be good to track mono rap vocals with? I just bought a Wes Audio Titan and am now working out what to fill it with. Good vid Cheers
Will you please give me your opinion on purchasing either the Wes Dione or the Heritage Successor for Bus duty, plugin features aside? I can only get one. I mix hip hop, pop and r&b.
Hello David, love your videos as you already know. You’re the man with 10 bus comps or more. Which one is more versatile? I’m in between Wesaudio NG and API 2500+. I’m a drummer, kinda jazz, Latin but I want punch as well. Both to record and mix, what do you recommend?
Wow I’m glad I learned about this compressor from your recent video on your favorite vca compressors. This has so many features on it that it seems you can sculpt it work in any type of material. The fact that it has recall like a plug is the icing on the cake. So many times I have had to go digging through notes on recalls. The fact that you can automate this like a plug opens up some many cool possibilities as well. Great video! Also, I was expected this to be at least 1800. 1200 is very good price! Thanks for the video! You always have the best most useful information
Hey David! I know this is an old video but the SSL G Bus just went on sale for $1299, and the Dione is about $1079 right now, since they are now the same price range, which one would you choose? Does the Dione actually have its own taste of the bus compressor with a certain color that you will actually prefer over? Thank you so much for your video again!
I'm not sure about the components in the SSL, there are many versions. Wes has the right vca's and the digital recall and the saturation and the 2500 sidechain, for that alone, I'd prefer it
I have a Drawmer DC2476 and of course like it alot. But seeing/hearing this review I want a Dione so "badly"... Should i buy a Dione as a complementary 2bus comp or as a replacement for the DC2476?
That drawmer is a digital unit, Dione is a VCA analog compressor. They are definitely apples and oranges, they can't be swapped really, if you like the Dione, get the Dione, the drawmer is a bit outdated (while I love almost everything Drawmer does)
How do you feel about the Dione on the mix bus or for mastering compressor as compared to the typical Waves/FabFilter/etc. plugin options? Would you say it makes a big difference or can the same thing be done ITB? I only have one stereo analog processor - SPL Vitalizer MKT2.
MixbusTV Thanks for getting back to me. I am looking at getting a 4-bay 500 enclosure for 2 bus purposes. The Dione is something I want. I will have room for another 2 space unit, maybe the upcoming stereo eq from Wes Audio? But not sure if I should waste that space on an EQ or just get something else like a different style comp. I mostly mix hip hop or high energy music, with occasional slow beats here and there.
Love the channel. I am thinking about getting my first comp. Main duties is light comp for tracking vocals for peaks as well as master bus. I am already convinced to buy a pair of RND 542 (thanks to you) and I was planning to buy a versatile comp to pair with it. Also, I read on GS that some people go Xpressor ---> 542 in their chain. thoughts? I like the 500 series system. Maybe there is a 500 comp i should also consider? Buzz?
Hi David, I wanna thank you for your channel. As I can see you also have Xpressor 500 in your rack. I'm on the market for a mixbus comp. I've tried and liked the SSL master bus compressor. So beacuse Wes Dione500 is a clone of SSL, I believe that the result we hear will be pretty close, right? But what about the Xpressor? Couse I couln't try it. Can you explain a very little about Xpressor's sound characteristics, and which one would you prefer for different genres of music? (like SSL for rock&metal, Xpressor for Pop -R&B ? etc etc. ) Thanks
BTW I brought the dione I'm in love!!!! I got this patched into my output of my summing mixer and damn!!!!!!! Thanks bro this is a great purchase with great value at a great price
Hey David, I received the Dione a week ago and finally today I got the cables in the mail. So I noticed that the meters on the plugin vs the hardware are off by about 2-3 db. The hardware shows more gain reduction than the plugin. In your video I can see a little of that as well, but mine seems to be a bigger difference. I emailed Wes Audio, and I'll be using my ears, but it would be nice if the plugin and hardware showed the same meters.
Well I didn't say I'm liking it quite yet haha. It's definitely a nice looking comp. I'm A/B-ing it with the Waves SSL Comp and the NI Solid Bus Comp, and I noticed I kind of like the NI better on this track. The clap seems to have more bite on the NI and Waves plugins than the hardware. On the hardware it sounds a little muffled until I add in some THD. But honestly, there isn't as much of a difference as I thought there would be. Hopefully the unit will grow on me, as it's quite expensive to pay $1000 just for a placebo (well at least for me). Also, I am noticing that I have to turn the threshold almost all the way to -20 to get 5 db of reduction on a track that is almost clipping... On the plugins I have the threshold at +10, and on the hardware at -15 just to get the same level of reduction. This is weird.
MixbusTV You were right David. My RME Fireface 800 interface was set to output at -10 dB. I set it to +4 (the only other option) and now I can set the threshold halfway and get good gain reduction. I have more tests to try but it seems this made a big difference in sound. Thanks for all your help! - also forgot to mention that the meters are now much closer than before. Whew... I thought I had a broken Dione, but it was my own stupid fault.
@@auralplex so how do you like it now compared to the plugins? I have waves mercury but thinking of getting into 500 modules and was wondering how the compressors really compare
I recently discovered your channel, and I have to thank you for making some extremely useful and informative videos .. So .. Thank you :) I noticed you also have the Elysia Xpressor stereo compressor. I have been looking for a 500 format stereo comp, and I was almost set on the Elysia hoping that it would also do the SSL bus thing. The Elysia looks extremely versatile, but how would you compare it to the Dione for bus duties. How is the Elysia compared to an 1176 for tracking or vocal purposes? Could you enlighten me on how they are different in use? Any thoughts would be helpful. I have only little possibility of trying these myself Thank you again, and thanks in advance.
Thanks a lot. That was exactly the kind of experience based answer, I was looking for. I think the Dione is the right one for me. I would love to have a hardware compressor to mix into. The Dione seems like the perfect choice. I have an 1176 clone in my 500 rack (Lindell Audio, probably in a lesser league than Dione), I well probably keep it for tracking, but I will likely get the Dione, when I get the funds. Thanks again.
I'm addicted to buying plugins too. lol. Its a horrible spending habit but a great investment at the ned of the day. haha At least thats what i keep telling myself. haha
Hello there. Sorry for the probably silly question, but just to get this straight. You're going analog into the unit from your converter, you're not actually sending audio to the unit via USB? USB is just for control and recall of the plugin within your DAW project, but you still have to go analog out to the unit and back into your DAW?
MixbusTV That's cool. So you get the convenience of plugins. So when you open your project back up, it's the same settings, but on the hardware. And the same USB connection is used to send sidechain information to the hardware. Like a kick drum trigger for ducking. Man, I'm really watching this space with interest. Bettermaker are doing some amazing stuff too. I'm just worried about how long the plugin will be supported? I mean what happens if they discontinue the hardware. That's like losing a £1000 plugin :(
Am concerned that their system for automating hardware isn’t getting any traction. I know that they have open sourced it so other manufacturers will come on board but I really don’t see many doing so and that could be a big problem for the longevity of the platform. To be clear, I love what they have done but what is holding me back from buying their rack and committing to the platform is current lack of support. If they were at NAMM maybe others got onboard. I really hope so as it looks to be a superbly designed system for automating hardware modules.
MixbusTV care to share what your fav is now haha? i make primarily hip hop. i need something with some meat for drum bus and some mastering in 500 series
@@mixbustv So follow up question. I’m looking at getting into a Dione and most likely a Prometheus. I’ve been looking at their Titan rack. I’m your opinion is the expense justifiable for the rack? It is worthy to note Wesaudio has stated most modules work in this rack but there are some units that do not and some that cannot be confirmed to work due to fitment. The api550A being one of those In the latter category. So would you advise for Titan rack or regular 10 or 11 slot rack
I have a question, so Dione can be used as plugin, can I just insert it in my mixer channel and not record it as a new stem, (like other hardware) but just put it on and export the whole track? Will it effect the track in digital way or analog way? Really curious :)
awsome! maybe oneday Ill be able to buy a $3000 compressor well $2000 us, almost 3000 canadian! but ya its super nice! might have to send you my album to master when its done!
Hard to say whether its good or not as you're using it as a volume control, increasing the volume when compressor is IN. Why is never any gear reviews on youtube level-matched.
Because compressors (especially the ones like this with a saturation stage) DO increase the perceived loudness at the same or lower peak level. That's literally why you use a compressor and if you don't show that then wtf are you demo'ing for?
no problem for comment and yes definitely next level you always have great informative stuff on your channel I don't see how anybody can thumbs down any of your stuff that's crazy

So follow up question.
MixbusTV Got it! Really appreciated David
What's was the answer a lot of his answers are deleted 😧
I don't think it's a plugin. The track has to run out to the hardware unit and then back again. The VST image is just to control the hardware.
is this clone one of the more expensive ones out there?or is it more somewhere in the middle?
awsome! maybe oneday Ill be able to buy a $3000 compressor well $2000 us, almost 3000 canadian! but ya its super nice! might have to send you my album to master when its done!
Awesome !!!
dope
Oops I did it again....lmao...I hear ya
Hard to say whether its good or not as you're using it as a volume control, increasing the volume when compressor is IN. Why is never any gear reviews on youtube level-matched.
Because compressors (especially the ones like this with a saturation stage) DO increase the perceived loudness at the same or lower peak level. That's literally why you use a compressor and if you don't show that then wtf are you demo'ing for?
your "I" looks like a Doner :D i know its a fader but still
no problem for comment and yes definitely next level you always have great informative stuff on your channel I don't see how anybody can thumbs down any of your stuff that's crazy
