      Indeed, especially for an airline with a shaky on time rate, to have more redundancy in your fleet can help improve that.

      With recent Boeing groundings it would make more sence to go the A350 if for nothing else than redundency incase of anymore groundings. I suspect that is why the A320 has been ordered recently - United can see that Boeing is not a manufacturer that they can afford to rely on.

    Definitely the 787, because as you stated, it just doesn't make sense to bring in a new aircraft manufacturer for wide-bodies. It just doesn't make sense from a logistics standpoint.

    • @mariusdufour9186
      @mariusdufour9186 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As an outsider looking in, I'd argue it's resilience they're after. Sure, when everything goes right, you want a streamlined fleet to maximise profits, but, when things start going wrong you're happy when you have a backup.
      Say, for example, your airline ordered only 777x's to replace a bunch of aging 777s and 747s, well, you're still waiting on those planes as the delivery dates keep getting pushed back further and further. However, if you ordered both the 777X and the 350, you're probably already replacing the oldest widebodies in your fleet right now, if you've planned ahead you also included escalation clauses so that you can reduce/increase your order of 350s and reduce/increase your order of 777x's for only a small fee, depending on how things go. So now you have an edge over airlines with a pure Boeing fleet because you're flying new and economical wide-body's in the 777/350 class. If, down the line, the 777x turns out to be significantly better than the 350 you can always sell some of your A350s on the second hand market and increase your order for the 777x.
      The same goes for when a particular aircraft model has to be grounded, if your airline hedged it's bets it can keep flying at least a partial schedule on the affected routes with the similar sized Airbus/Boeing aircraft. Especially outside of low cost carriers, there is value in being able to always deliver, or at least offer another flight that same day. Business passengers are likely willing to pay a premium for that kind of reliability, while an airline that has a single manufacturer fleet might have no choice but to temporarily cancel routes.
      Finally, when it comes to ordering new aircraft, manufacturers value repeat customers, so if your airline has a history of ordering at least some of every new aircraft type from a manufacturer, they're more likely to give you early delivery slots. If you're also buying the competition, you also get extra leverage in negotiations, because the cost for your airline to shift entirely to the competition in a particular class is that much lower than for a fully streamlined airline. For example, Ryanair isn't going to switch to an A320 fleet unless they get a ridiculous discount, so regardless of how hardball the negotiations are, Boeing knows it's going to sell them the 737Max in the end. (of course streamlined airlines tend to negotiate bulk prices as they order larger amounts of the same aircraft.)

      @@mariusdufour9186 So wouldn’t they just lease instead of buy if they didn’t think they could get delivery of their primary type?

    • @mariusdufour9186
      @mariusdufour9186 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jlorenz55 Sure, they tend to lease a good part of their fleet, which does give them even more flexibility. However, they don't necessarily have a 'primary' type, that's the whole point. Being able to go back and forth between types depending on the route, availability of planes and groundings etc. If you have 90% 787s and 10% A330neo aircraft, you're going to struggle to even provide a minimum service on those routes if the 787 is grounded, so considering the 787 is a more modern and more economical aircraft, you're going to have more like 60-70% 787s and 30-40% A330neo, and then if a replacement from Airbus comes out, you might gradually re-balance it with 30-40% 787s and 60-70% of the new type. You have enough pilots, maintenance crews, etc, to handle such a change because both types have been in your fleet in significant numbers.

      I dunno about that Airbus still hasn't fixed the paint problem with the A350, which would at the least cause the planes to be pulled out of service earlier to be repainted. I saw pictures where the mesh was damaged to the point where the carbon fiber was exposed to the elements which I don't think is a immediate air safety issue, but I think it will cause the carbon fiber body to decay faster in the long term which in turn could lessen the life of the air frame.

    People always compare the 787 and A350 as equals but really the A350 is more of a 777 replacement, especially the -1000 variant. Many of UA's 777s are aging and will need replacement soon. With the problems the 777X is facing, it wouldn't surprise me if they went with the A350-1000 version.

    • @mmm0404
      @mmm0404 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the thing is most 777-300ER operators will not replace their jets 1 to 1 in terms of capacity. They will most likely downsize to the 787/a359.
      The a350-1000 will have a hard time selling more especially with the 787/a359 proving less riskier, in these uncertain times. We are not really sure how travel demand will recover in the future.
      Th 777X seems big but not to current/ former a380 and 747 operators . Its a perfect jet for those downsizing from the larger 4 engined beasts

    I think it’s safe to say that the general perception is that UA are more likely to order Boeing widebodys than Airbus however Airbus may have a few tricks up their sleeves. Pilot training, the A320 XLR pilots with minimal training can also fly the A350. Aircraft availability and price, with Aeroflot and Qatar now not taking their ordered ships there ar som early line slots and at potentially competitive prices, add to that the existing order which is probably bargain basement price Airbus should be capable of competing with Boeing. Finally,with such a large potential order both Rolls Royce and Airbus will sharpen their maintenance pricing pens to accommodate Delta. At the moment it’s anybody’s order.
