With the null test - are the signals peak level matched, the plugin may be adding gain which will throw the null test out, so the plug may be clean at unity/default settings but what you are hearing is just a level difference. But may not be if they are level matched.
Edit: I just tested this out for myself and even if they are level matched they don't cancel out.

Yea I did a whole other section of video that I edited out because no matter how close I got it, there wasn’t much of a difference that made the plug-in sound better. Also, like I said in the video I wanted to stick to showing the actual differences of what each setting is doing at unity output gain, to see what it’s adding (the gain) to your original audio.
