Just so you know, original director of this game has compiled a Director's Cut of Sonic 3D Blast. It's an almost-official romhack that fixes many of the problems with the game - there is a level select, speed shoes are actually useful, and most importantly - Flickies form an invincible shield around you and you can't lose them, making collecting them feel more rewarding and less of a pain. There's also a time attack mode, there's actually Super Sonic in the game, controls are less annoying...

There is a very good reason Sonic is still such a massive icon. It's because of those games. And they still stand up to this day as fun and very playable.
Wow. Some of your views of this are actually worth listening to again, you offer new perspective and fresh eyes to the series that some (and even myself) don't think about. What baffles me is why some of the games were discontinued such as Tails' adventures, it looks good, makes use of gadgetry (at the time) which is great for a character associated with mechanics. Then you have choatix which seems to suit knuckles style of adventures as he's more a suitable variable character (fast, scale walls etc) that he looks best for a game that trains players on using combination skill. It makes me wonder if the sonic franchise were too focused on making sonic the cash cow and advertising his sole attribute (speed) that as the consoles entered 3D and Sonic's gameplay and pace were about impossible to replicate on the next consoles, that they had no one else to fall back onto to keep the franchise flying high. Hence creating 'shadow' because he's a darker sonic etc And that they had long relegated other characters new to the series to the background because there was no vision or attempt to create new stories for these characters, who are now have to be tagged under a sonic game to even exist. It does sound harsh but to me that's wrong with the franchise it depended too much on one character and didn't want to branch out too much, in case of risk interest from sonic would be sidelined. Now sonic is regarded as an example of a 'has been' with no one to be the plan B and keep the franchise going noticeably well.
Dan Maximus Thanks, yeah, every time I'd finish one of these scripts, I'd check the word count and be kind of surprised by how much I had to say about it. This summer, I'll be hitting the modern Sonic titles, so I'll save my thoughts for then.
I just don't understand, I will *never* understand why Sega didn't just make a badass super smoothly animated and detailed sprite based "next gen" 32-bit 2D Sonic game, instead of canceling the franchise all together. The Saturn was not built for 3D graphics, it was designed as a 2D powerhouse and a 32-bit 2D Sonic would have been amazing! It could have helped sustain peoples interest in 2D games as long as they were great. I wouldn't mind if you just went all-out Sonic on this channel. These have been great. And a video (or series of videos) on Sonic Xtreme and all the drama that went on there would by highly entertaining.
The Geek Critique - It's really great to hear that you're not totally depreciate and "dissing" Sonic R. It's rather the game for someone, who already know (and like) Sonic series, but still it gaves some pleasant and "light" gameplay. I've played in PC version, don't know if it's true that this one is a bit better than release on Saturn, but anyway - even the control is not so horrible as many people says. My ears are melting when I'm hearing the music in this game (BTW - is there any way to swap it?), and five tracks are not enough for any racing game, but these are the most annoying lacks. Ok, I admit that it's nothing special, but I still like it. Yeah, I admit that it can be a bit hard to explain :P I really regret that probably I will never be able to play in Knuckles & Chaotix on my Mega Drive. It's really hard to obtain cartridge with this game without ruining the wallet (especially since I have PAL console - PAL carts on 32X are almost like luxury goods), not to mention that the same 32X PAL is also quite expensive. Stupid region locks :( It has some special status nowadays - no re-relases in any form, only (not very popular even then) 32X. I know that it has opinion of rather mediocre title, but still it's very tempting. And I DEFINITELY share you sentiment in case of Sonic 3D Blast :) (no matter if we're talking about MD/Genesis version or Saturn/PC version), I've played in many Sonic games and enjoyed them, even such as mentioned Sonic R or even Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 (yes, even this one!), but Sonic 3D Blast is up to this day one of these Sonic games, which were for me totally boring and totally not "engaging". It's quite surprising that "classic" era of Sonic (let's say that it was everything before Sonic Adventure :P) ended in so unspectacular way - no "full-pledged" Sonic title on Saturn, and in fact the only one which was completely new was Sonic R. Well, I'm really curious what you'll say about Sonic Adventure in next part, and for now - well deserved thumb up! :)
Amazing retrospective! The only Sega consoles I owned as a kid were the Genesis and Dreamcast so I missed out on most of these when I was really young. I do agree with you that Sonic has always had it's share of duds. The classic era is't sacred or anything but it's still got some of my favorite games. The wait for Summer 2015 will be a long and painful one...
Yeah, believe me, I've constantly had script ideas for Sonic Adventure bouncing around in my head. I could just go on babbling about Sonic forever if I wanted to. But hey, eventually I'll have covered every single Sonic game there's ever been... and no other series with this many games is getting that kind of treatment. xD
Going through the history of Sonic really just goes to show that Sega has always rushed out garbage Sonic games to make more money. Honestly the good games in the series are the exception rather than the rule..
Are you sure the main mechanic of Sonic 3D Blast was rescuing Flickies? Could of sworn it was giving the player unbearable headaches if you played it more than 2 minutes. Maybe it was just me, but the game would give me awful headaches as a kid. Also the real reason there's only 5 courses in Sonic R is because they couldn't make 16 amazing tracks like the 5 we've got, it would have just been too much.
I feel like I am the only person who genuinely likes Sonic 3D Blast on the Genesis. I like the different approach it had. I liked exploring in the 3D levels to defeat enemies and escorting the flickies to the goal.I also don't think the levels are "samey" They have different layouts and I think they flow well. Is it my favorite Sonic game? No, but I do really enjoy it every time I play it though.
Sjono Eh, I think we could've seen stuff like that had Sega remained a hardware manufacturer, but it's a tougher sell when you're making games for other platforms.
The problem is that often SEGA didn't really capitalise on their IPs. Around the Saturn era they weren't even really investing much into new Sonic games, let alone ones for supporting characters.
Really wish they would go back and fully optimize Sonic The Fighters so that it could compete with today's fighters and cement itself within the FGC. I think it still has potential it's been backed by the VF engine. Damn.
This is part of TGC's coverage of Sonic the Hedgehog games! Don't miss them: th-cam.com/play/PLYoabN6QznuIl47fs9wFK10HBJNqv_5P3.html
Geek Critique, you should review sonic generations or maybe something like SA2(sonic adventure 2)
You should try Sonic 3D Blast DX, fixed a lot of problems the original game had.

But hey, eventually I'll have covered every single Sonic game there's ever been... and no other series with this many games is getting that kind of treatment. xD
what music is that at 6:45
12:50 you lied then, you do listen to music!
13:40 jesus man it sounds like my headphones broke
Going through the history of Sonic really just goes to show that Sega has always rushed out garbage Sonic games to make more money. Honestly the good games in the series are the exception rather than the rule..
There's a fan hack on Sonic Retro that is basically Sonic 3D Blast but with *no* flickies.
I am loving this series! I know I am a late adopter haha! Good work!
A fellow sonic R lover!
Same, my favorite 3d sonic.
Love your videos!
13:29 what happened to your voice recording
I thought the audio quality lowering was on purpose
I found a sonic the fighters original cabinet in a red robin near my house
Oh, my gosh, I could only imagine hearing the funky Japanese-esque music blasting from it.
One of the original creators of Sonic 3D blast is actually working on a ROM hack that improves the gameplay
Sonic 3D blast looks goddamn terrifying
Glad to hear that Sonic R brother.
14:34 woah, he predicted the "Sonic was never good" meme!
Hey, I didn't predict it. It just already existed.
@@GeekCritique Fairs!
Talking about sonic, am I the only one who smiles when I see sonic mania?
I never thought I'd find another person besides me who likes Sonic R!
Anyone know the music at 2:37
Will you be going in-depth about Sonic 4 (Episodes I & II) at any point? I'd love to hear the opinion of such a hardcore Sonic fan.
So I have to wait until next summer for you to talk about the good Sonic games.
. . . Yeah, I love Sonic R too. Especially the music.
YA GOT TO KEEP THAT DREAM ALIVE, WHERE EVERYTHING IS FREE, CAN'T CHA SEE?
Are you sure the main mechanic of Sonic 3D Blast was rescuing Flickies? Could of sworn it was giving the player unbearable headaches if you played it more than 2 minutes. Maybe it was just me, but the game would give me awful headaches as a kid.
Also the real reason there's only 5 courses in Sonic R is because they couldn't make 16 amazing tracks like the 5 we've got, it would have just been too much.
The best sonic game is: S O N I C A N D G A R D F E I L D M A S T E R P A C K
I can vouch for Freedom Planet. It's an amazing game and I highly recommend it.
What happend to you audio?
13:29 audio lowers quality
I wonder why?
If you haven't played Freedom Planet, do it. It's great.
Now I wanna play Sonic 3d again. I still have the PC version lying around . Heck, I'm gonna install it on a virtual machine
For sonic R you can use a button to move like a driving game
Great video, Josh. Hope you make more videos of this caliber! (btw when's the next livestream?)
Bro, what happened to the audio?
Its a shame that Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow couldn't spin off into their own subseries like the Mario characters
Sjono Eh, I think we could've seen stuff like that had Sega remained a hardware manufacturer, but it's a tougher sell when you're making games for other platforms.
The Rabbids got their own separate series so its possible but not advised
I mean shadow has a game, though its only one. Most people dont like it, but i do.
The problem is that often SEGA didn't really capitalise on their IPs. Around the Saturn era they weren't even really investing much into new Sonic games, let alone ones for supporting characters.
@@ToonReel001 Sega was always busy making new IPs, I think that's a good thing.
Have you ever played Sonic on the original Tiger systems? It's an experience, let me tell you.
What the hell happened to the audio at the end?
"And I am including the modern era"
This sentence makes me sad.
Sonic R is such a bad game, but has one of the best video game soundtracks of the series and of the 90s as a whole.
SONIC R IS MY ULTIMATE GUILTY PLEASURE AS WELL
Really wish they would go back and fully optimize Sonic The Fighters so that it could compete with today's fighters and cement itself within the FGC. I think it still has potential it's been backed by the VF engine. Damn.
Sonic Jam looks interesting. Should I preferably play this instead of Sonic 3 Complete?
