I found an article about Terry Conner from April 1989. He said he got diagnosed in 1986, 4 years after the potential risk event that he believes was the source. There were and still are the people who made it to 1997. I hope he also made it.
Oh God, watching 80’s documentaries and seeing people suffer truly breaks my heart and saddens me. But the most saddest thing in these documentaries is the discrimination against the GBT community.
The early days of AIDS is a black page In mankind’s history. No one deserves to die in this way.
Millions of people suffered at unprecedented levels, ignored by the “humans”, disowned by their own families, and fired from their workplaces..
These events constitute genocide-level crimes against humanity. Yet we only remember those days like an average epidemic, as if it just was Covid like misfortune that humanity faced...
    RIP beautiful people!

The woman who got hysterical was not discriminating between two admittedly (in 1987) issues. There was the moral issue of homosexuality and anal sex, and the issue of the medical condition, AIDS. This conference was about the latter, not the former. In her mind, she could not separate them. As a result, she was overcome with fear and anger that blocked her from learning about the AIDS situation.
I do like the way the moderators handled her and the majority of the audience, while reacting negatively, controlled themselves. No violence occurred, the woman did nothing more than verbally unload without resorting to vicious name calling and did step off stage when security required it.
Her sermonizing was not going to prevent AIDS, or any other STD. It wasn’t helpful towards combatting AIDS or any other STD. (Way too late for that!) Plus her assertion that STDS come exclusively from anal sex was just incorrect.
I do hope she educated herself and developed some compassion for AIDS sufferers regardless of how they became infected.

@@jrawlins5246 If that is how you see it in AD 2022, fine. What I saw in it was that surely everybody at that time, in 1987, knew unprotected anal intercourse was high-risk behaviour #1 as was needle sharing for intravenous drugs, but that lady just had to make a spectacle of how aggressive and hateful she was of gay men, the prime victims of the disease at the time. The incidence of STDs among gay men had plummeted in San Francisco, indicating gays were not that irresponsible bunch of weirdos the lady and her soulmates liked to think. She is totally void of sympathy and compassion for the victims of a dreadful, deadly disease. She is sorry for "that innocent young man" who had got it from a whore. She probably could not care less about the heterosexuals in Africa, or later, the children of a children's hospital in Kalmykia, the Mongol republic in European Russia, who were the first reported AIDS victims in the then Soviet Union. (Incidentally, the Soviets hinted and tried to popularize the idea that who were to blame for AIDS were not gays but the CIA and secret American labs developing biological weapons, gays only being guinea pigs: they first planted a story to that effect in some newspaper in India and then started quoting the paper, their own lie, in Radio Moscow's broadcasts to North America among others.) But the lady thinks it's just those ass-f***ing gays! I find it ridiculous and deplorably benighted, and her attitude with a need for scapegoating far from anything I even remotely could call Christian.

36:12-37:06. Is Terry Conner, from Philadelphia, still alive? This was aired on July 24, 1987 and advanced HIV medications was readily available the HIV+ individuals in 1997, so it could be possible he made it to 1997.
While female to male HIV infection is a 0.05% chance (per CDC), it is still possible and the 0.05% chance of HIV infection from female to male increases if the HIV+ female has a high viral load, on her menstrual cycle and the HIV- male has a cut on his penis.
