My first step into the audiophile world was the HD560s and ifi Zen Dac v2 + Tidal for streaming music.. Honestly blew me away the first time I heard music/gaming at that level and sent me down a very expensive rabbit hole. I still understand why people go wireless especially with the audio constantly improving in this space! Also if they think you are being paid for your reviews they clearly haven't been here long haha it's the reason I always come back to your reviews as I know they aren't paid and never will be.
I use some audiophile stuff too, actually i really like Ananda and FT1 at this moment with fiio K11 But yeah for sure i need also a gaming headset wireless for convenience
The Sennheiser 560s is usually $179, doesn't need a powerful dac and is better then any gaming headset. I have the 560s and the 58x with just a simple ifi uno dac/amp.
Wireless headset = convenience, comfort, no cables, mic included, no amp, no dac. AND THAT DOESNT MEAN BAD AUDIO nowadays! To be honest, I returned Audeze Maxwell and got back to my pulse 3d but upgraded with Wicked Cushions. Maxwell sounded nice but a bit too clinical for me and it was pressurizing my ears :P
The difference between audeze maxwell and Pulse 3d is night and day. I have Pulse 3d and its not comfortable, and sound is not that good even at 100 usd gap. Audeze may be overpriced but everyone says its the best headset for gaming at the moment.

Both of you are wrong. It's all personal preference. We all have different ears and head shapes. Sound is also subjective. Techne called me out in this video with a comment I made to someone. I wasn't trying to be a dck. I was just letting people know it's apples and bananas comparison. Even money wise. The turtle beach is a better bang for your money and a cheaper solution to build up to something like a professional headphones and amp/dac. If you want to upgrade which isn't necessary.
Nice one I couldn't agree more.if you casual game for a few hours a day then a gaming headset will probably suite most people.i game for at least 6hours a day, audio is very important to me. I have the Maxwell's , model ones, atlas air and x2hr. Using an amp is totally worth it.
I went this route a couple of years ago. DT990 Pro + Loxjie P20 AMP + Topping D10 Balanced DAC. This is my main high end audio for games and music. But when I want to relax and play some more chill games on my couch and OLED (hooked to my PC aswell) I use either SteelSeries 7X or my newly discovered gaming IEMs (TRN VX) connected directly to the DualSense Controller. Let me tell you, these IEMs rival, if not, sound BETTER than my high end setup, also they have a mic, pretty basic but does the job. Still wired but they work really good.
Techne...that original comment was mine and I appreciate you making a video in regards to that question. Never expected it. I did however do just as you stated in the video and bought both the HD560 and Atlas Air. Still deciding on a dac though as I'm primarily on PS5 and want something compatible. I really like the Atlas Air but out of the box and after firmware update their volume is just really low. I'm not sure I can live with it that low. The 560s definitely need more power than the controller provides to get the most out of them. Though even as they are I can hear little details I don't think I've heard before.
I've been using my Phillips X2HR's for many years and found my end game. Really comfy and can be used for hours and fairly dynamic with more than enough bass for that impact in games and videos. For mic HyperX. Paired up with Khadas Tone Board + JDS Atom and set up has been working flawlessly. I can understand the want for gaming headsets. Especially in the lower end on the price spectrum where you can get some really good ones like HyperX Clould/Alphas (I've had a few of those). And even higher end ones like the Turtle Beaches for convienience and ease of use. Though with that said.. I can't go back to gaming headsets as I find most to be uncomfortable and lacking in sound quality unless you are willing to spend a considerable amount of money for a high end that doesn't compromise on build or sound.
The DAC/Amp for wired isn't a big issue anymore. With lots of great USB dongles going for like 15$ like the Jade Audio JA11 you can get the clean sound you need for better headphones.
I honestly prefer iems over headphones, but I do like both. I do have a few headsets too from before the rabbit hole lol, but the audeze maxwell is genuinely great after eq.
Love the videos. What is that headphone stand? It looks super nice! Also supposedly connecting them to your phone and changing the staging will fix the low audio. Have been looking for a headset for many months now and finally just bought these. First time I'll ever use a non closed back headphone. Can't wait to try them out.
Crazy how when i just bought my first pair of audiophile headphones (beyer dt 770 pro 80 ohms, hope you can do a vid on em soon) and just started learning about audio set ups and looking into getting an amp/dac, you make a video about it
Yeah for comfort it's perfect, but you never have the details that a headphones can produce, unless you spend 5000€ and more in speakers + room treatment To have the details and precision of 300/500€ headphones, you need to spend a lot in speakers
Hi~! Im new to the audio hobby and I mostly want to use it on gaming and some listening. The Audio technica Apos r70x refine that you did a video on caught my eye. Watched alot of reviewers about that and I really want to get that, is there a budget dac dongle preferrably so I can use it outside of my pc? I saw someone selling it reasonably priced locally here in the southeast asia but the seller told me that a dongle wouldnt do it well. Thank you for doing vids like this both for the subjective and objective take is very helpful for newer people.
I watched this video time an time again’ part of me wants to experience a really nice open back headset for gaming n such. Another experience would be to get a hold of a dac/amp with maybe a better headset to see a fuller experience. Recently started watching movies with my headset, and it really changes everything. RPG and open world games have been inviting themselves into life just so I can immerse myself with fine audio. Music is great all around not many headsets have made go wow yet. Nova 7x lucid audio was rather interesting, been my go to if I hadn’t lost my dongle for turtle beaches 700 gen 2, again super hearing really grew on to me. It’s almost like I really need that option again’ not to mention the bass boost as well n gel pads. Biggest complaint was head band was not padded at all. Was like having a bar sit on top your head, play through it you got yourself a full head ache. Like aching
Hey Techne, I'm considering buying a gaming headset. I play a range of games on console and your review on the steelseries nova 5x really interested me as it had heaps of presets for different games. My question is, where i am, the nova 7x is actually cheaper so is it worth paying more for the 5x?
This video here absolutely is the answer to this. You certainly can’t just say an amp and headphones are always the best experience for everyone. Some people are content with headset features, some want the best fidelity that an amplified headphone can give. But both camps have their own tastes, and sometimes a headset that meets those tastes with its signature can be better to someone than a higher fidelity headphone with amp that has a signature that isn’t to their taste. For example, throwing the HD560s and an amplifier around to every person who wants a better game experience doesn’t always work, while it will be more fps competitive and absolutely is a great choice for that, its neutral and more flat sound may bore quite a few people. Additionally while that person may actually like it, there may be something out there that cost less that has a signature they liked even more, for instance maybe everything with that 560s is all good but they feel they miss out on immersive bass. Best thing you can do is figure out what you like, what you may feel you’re missing from your set (whether it be full bodied immersion, imaging for competitive fps, staging, etc), and then go find what will suit you.
It is true that gaming headsets have many comforting features like volume nobs ,noise canceling, attached mic and of course being wireless, Headphones on the other hand give you the rich sound, however not all games will get the benefit of sound, some games have bad sound engineering like FF7 Remake while some games are masterpieces when it comes to sound and surround optimization like Resident Evil 2 Remake, so it also depends on what you are playing, 2D games will not get the benefit of wide soundstage , open world games need a headphone/headset with wide soundstage to enjoy the environment. So if you sit on a couch and play your consoles on TV you are stuck with wireless headsets, if you are hooked to a desk, I see no reason to use wireless.
Been using a samson sr850 connected to a fiio e10k maybe more than 6 years now.its my endgame sound and I don't even wonder if theres anything better out there for gaming
Hi techne another great video. But the best thing about it is that you are honest. The only thing I hated about the turtle beach atlas air is the volume is too low turtle beach needs to fix that problem I sent mine back because I have the astro a50x and there better than the turtle beach atlas air. But I just ordered the Aune ar5000 headphones. Can you do a review on those I would like to see what you think of them. Also I'm using the beyerdynamic mmx 300 pro. Check those out to there awesome. But I'm waiting for the aune ar5000. Thank you techne stay safe and happy gaming to you.
I've had a lot of headphones and my personal favorite just in terms of sound quality is the Beyrdynamics DT770 studio. I messed up and got the 80 ohm version tho so I've gotta plug them into my Klipshc Pro Media 2.1 system which has a really strong headphone amp but man they sound great and they're not that expensive honestly considering what you get. I play pretty much only Call of Duty but I don't use voice chat, just way too toxic, so I don't need the mic.
Techne is one of the best if not the best product review channel, no need for companies to pay him for products and on top of that he will give you the most honest review ever.
not gonna lie, i absolutely hate volume wheels on gaming headsets, most of them are prone to cause audio imbalance issues and they often "take hostage" of the headsets true audio, usually if you find a way to disable volume wheels your headphones will sound better and be better off in the long run
I Like speakers as well as headphones. I think the Topping MX3S sounds as well with both speakers and headphones as the separate Zens. There I saved you $200
Ive always wanted wireless headset bc I dont want that teather and currently running some rig 800s but have been looking to pick up a set of atlas airs

I do use a dac motu m2 and amp from shiit Magni+ but for gaming I would take the epos Hydrpro wireless any day wish I would have picked these up awhile ago its a shame they will no longer be making these greaat headphone they feel great on the head could use them for hours. And they are built very good. Sorry for the long post just wanted to thank you for your great videos . Btw what mouse is that your using the white and red looks sweet
hi techne, i actually use the turtle beaches after i saw your glowing review! With the ifi zen dac as well in wired, its not bad at all, not a perfect sound but for comfort and convenience i really like it, have you tried that pairing yet? what did you think?
I am no more using 2.4ghz reciever headsets ...to high input delay ..I have Astro, steelseries, Epos, I know vs wired it's not recommended for multi-player
In the modern age.. input lag from 2.4ghz isn't that big of an issue unless you have a TON of wireless interference around you from say like a ton of cell towers and an airport radar or way too many wireless devices. I play mainly CoD and BF2042 and use both wired headphones with a great dac/amp and Audeze Maxwells and have not been at an audio disadvantage when gaming on the maxwells. I'm not a gaming god, but can maintain an average K/D of 1.2 - 1.35 regardless of using wired or wireless gaming headphones
ah man. I wish i can use headphones for long hours for the sound. The skin around my ears are really sensitive and I constantly get rashes when I use it for long hours. Now I use IEMs instead of headphones, which the sound isn't as good.
Hey techne, recently bought a dedicated microphone and now I feel as if I should ditch my headset (Nova Pro Gamedac) and upgrade to something better that’s simply a dedicated headset?
Good OP video, T. But your audiophile slip is showing. 😁 So for gaming, which do you consider better open-back headset overall, theTurtle Beach or the Corsair? BTW, as a fellow Destiny 2 fan, I would love to hear your take on the recent news out of Bungie concerning the game. And as a fellow Jack White fan, I would love to hear your take on his latest album. 🍻
could you talk more about amp and dec because its kinda confusing, like i have logitech headphone which connects to its software so i want to use its profile for my different game (so i need to connect it to my laptop using usb instead of jack) so how can i achieve both amp and software
Maybe should have compared a gaming dac/amp that does have the features of a gaming headset. ie soundblaster gc7, x4 and g6. Or the gsx1000 from Senny. Just saying
Its been quite some time that I dont watch your videos, specially because here in Brasil we dont get some stuff you can get, for example Turtle Beach is non existent here, Razer is a bit easier and Logitech and HyperX is way way way easier, but some are really expensive. All that to say that this scenario/background is awesome.
I just need to find how to de-esse the KSC75 using Equalizer APO. Because, damn, do they sound great but do pierce my skull every time someone says an s. But nothing I do in the de-esser of the Reaper plugins does anything. All I could do was a bunch of progressige high shelves brining down the upper ranges but that only serves to ruin their sound.
I just got my Atlas Air today but they still didn’t fixed the low volume and EQ issues. I installed the latest firmware etc. so I’m gonna return this defective product. It’s such a shame they don’t fix those issues even after months, otherwise the headset seems pretty nice.
@@TheTechne Yeah, I did a reset of the headset and uninstalled the app from PC and only used the iOS app after this but the EQ ist still bugged and I have to crank the volume up to around 90. The EQ and even volume works fine over Bluetooth though, so it seems to be solely an issue with the 2,4GH dongle.
Sennheiser HD490 Pro are the new sweetspot for gaming. Ridiculous soundstage, ridiculous positioning and stereo imaging, "fun" and natural sound signature. Can drive them easily.
Using a dac/amp will definitely help with volume and might "clean" up your audio source if you have lots of interference in your system. However, this will add another volume knob which might conflict with your headsets if they have it too. Youd wanna set your headsets to near max and then probably only tweak the dac/amp's volume control. But then you'd lose a function on the headset ya bought. Also let's say your headphones came with software with volume mixing. That's another contender that wants control over your volume. So Id say definitely go for it but just note what your headset uses. And take note what software and hardware you already have for volume.
Gaming headsets are nothing like they were 15 years ago. They compete in sound quality to any of the established audiophile sets. Plus have all the other features of a gaming headset.. This is a fact.
What really is there that makes the features of Gaming junk worth the price? I'm no audiophile, I'm gaming a lot in my free time and I recently began wanting to replace my Razer Kraken X that I've been gifted years ago, and there's not really much from what I can see that justifies the prices that much. Built-in mic that sounds like ass, and often isn't retractable or detachable, making it weird to use in public? Get headphones and buy a standalone mic instead. Volume controls on the headset itself Some have it, some not, get the ones that do. Mobile app with profiles for games? ...why the extra struggle for something that should just work well our of the box? Surround sound? Most often than not it's shit. RGB? ...do I need to comment this one?
These are not honest reviews I got wicked cushions waited forever and the pads are not stinking cozy they're way smaller than factory hurt my ears completely change the audio and feel like wearing a torture device

So for gaming, which do you consider better open-back headset overall, theTurtle Beach or the Corsair?
BTW, as a fellow Destiny 2 fan, I would love to hear your take on the recent news out of Bungie concerning the game. And as a fellow Jack White fan, I would love to hear your take on his latest album. 🍻
what do you think are the best headsets or headphones for PC, suitable for gaming and listening to Spotify and everyday use, priced around $150-$180?
could you talk more about amp and dec because its kinda confusing, like i have logitech headphone which connects to its software so i want to use its profile for my different game (so i need to connect it to my laptop using usb instead of jack) so how can i achieve both amp and software
I don’t see a problem with someone taking money for a review as long as they aren’t reading from a script and being told what to say.
All I could do was a bunch of progressige high shelves brining down the upper ranges but that only serves to ruin their sound.
sibilance is normally in the 3khz - 8khz range, possibly more depending on your hearing health in the higher freq ranges.
Does the atlas air have 3d audio on the ps5
3D audio works on every headset on PS5. The Atlas Air just gave super low volume on the console which is why I ended up returning mine.
I just got my Atlas Air today but they still didn’t fixed the low volume and EQ issues. I installed the latest firmware etc. so I’m gonna return this defective product. It’s such a shame they don’t fix those issues even after months, otherwise the headset seems pretty nice.
Did you also try the app? I don't use the PC software I only use the app
@@Bocchii oh yeah, the increments still have to be cranked up, same with side tone and all.
my sony inzone h 7 lost connection with the usb adapter 😢😢😢
Sennheiser HD490 Pro are the new sweetspot for gaming. Ridiculous soundstage, ridiculous positioning and stereo imaging, "fun" and natural sound signature. Can drive them easily.
how about dac + gaming headset? o.o
But they don't compete in sound. They are ok the the Maxwell will compete with a closed back audiophile can but not in the open back space.
That's debatable, they beat them in convenience, sure. Sound quality, naaaaaaaaah.
Not all audiophile headphones sound good anyways
I’ll stick with my a50x’s
Audio doesn't make you better, either
Nothing is as good as my 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos speaker setup..
Home theater is so sexy
These are not honest reviews I got wicked cushions waited forever and the pads are not stinking cozy they're way smaller than factory hurt my ears completely change the audio and feel like wearing a torture device
