that is a particularly colorful male richly violet ruff and crest - there was an old bird in California that shared this coloration - tho for the most part birds in the states are somewhat less richly colored. there are a myriad of other differences, i suppose dew in part to the fragmentation of the stock populations -

In our country ... in India ... this bird is peacock ... it is the national bird of our country. But for the first time I see Malayan Peacock. It's beautiful and supernatural. Indeed, humans can never go beyond this amazing nature.

Despite their name, peacock pheasants are neither peafowl or pheasants, in fact peacock pheasants are not that distantly related to peafowl since peafowl and peacock pheasants are included within the subfamily Pavoninae, which also includes the arguses, crimson-headed partridge, chestnut-necklaced partridge, green-legged partridge, snowcocks, blue quail, king quail, snow mountain quail, malagasy partridge, sand partridge, and see-see partridge within the family Gallidae, which also includes the chickens, bamboo partridges, francolins, and spurfowl.
