    Are tambura strings the same a guitar and it not do you sell them?

    Thank you so much for this wonderful video. As a lute player I appreciate your thorough explanations. Interestingly the production of a good sound on the lute works similarly by holding the fingers parallel to the strings in order to push them towards the soundboard.

      Hello Fiona, Wonderful. Some nice variations for the 4-string are - Pa-Ni-Sa-Sa, ma-Dha-Sa-Sa. and Pa-ni-Sa-Sa. What key to you tune in? Would note names be better than sargam? Cheers!

    I have heard that the tanpura player is supposed to breathe in rhythm with the playing of the tanpura. If that is so, how does the breathing rhythm fit with the playing rhythm? When do you breathe in? When do you breathe out?

      I've never heard that before. The tanpura simply plays in a way to keep the drone going throughout the entire performance.

      Hello! no, that is the sound of the sitar. It's the strumming of the sympathetic strings also known as tariff strings. Hope that helps. Best

    How long would you say it takes to properly play the tanpura ?

      Tanpura is really just about getting the right touch and learning to tune precisely. It's not difficult like sitar or tabla. One could practice for 20-30minutes a day and become proficient within a month.

(I bought a 2 hand tanpura with missed strings..). In the string pack there are a bronzed one (bigger) , 2 equal metal (thiner) and a metal (medium). Please can you suggest me the correct order?

      Hi there, OK you'll want the thinnest metal string as your first string 1.(pa - our order is high - low) then the second thin metal string, 2. (sa) then the thicker metal string 3.(sa) and last the bronze string 4.(low sa). I hope this helps!

    Can somebody please tell me what websites are reliable to order a tan ours drone or other Indian instruments? Maybe not sitar since the good quality sitar’s cannot be cheap. But maybe a drone is easier to mess up when constructing.

      Start by doing very simple paltas in taal while playing tanpura. Gradually you'll develop more ease with playing the tanpura and singing in taal. Cheers!

      Surely. the basic tuning for 5-string from high to low in the key of C is - G-C-C-C-C (oct. lower). For 4-string G-C-C-C (oct. lower). I also cover some tuning variations for different melodies in this video.

      Long nails aren't necessary to play tanpura. however I've noticed that a little bit of nail helps with the tone.
