Absolutely the greatest gaming memories. I'm 35 now, turning 36 this year. I've played Stronghold since it came out in 2001. Can't wait to play it again remastered!!. AWESOME!!

Stronghold was a formative game for me. I spent hundreds if not thousands of hours playing it as a child, and it definitely influenced my taste in games and what I wanted to study. Twenty years and a Master's Degree in Medieval History later, I'm ready for more!
I love everything about this EXCEPT the redesign of the advisor.. his gnarly face has been imprinted into my very being for over 20 years and everytime i hear quotes or soundbits from Stronghold his face pops into my mind. =C
This is fantastic news! The campaigns of the original Stronghold and Crusader were absolute masterpieces. I don't think I'm the only one who would pay for other campaign DLC's in the future should the game go in that direction. Also bring on multiplayer! :D
I've just stumbled upon this. The original Stronghold is undoubtedly one of the very few games I've ever given a perfect 10/10 rating. That's why I'm absolutely thrilled! HOWEVER, I sincerely hope that you won't abandon support and will remain attentive to your community, just as the Age of Empires 2 team has done. The classic Stronghold games are a true gem, and with this step, there's a chance to breathe new life into the franchise. Let's hope it doesn't turn into a mere cash grab.

I just randomly decided to search for Stronghold Crusader and I see this was posted 3 weeks ago. Never played the original Stronghold, but I am so glad these games are still getting the love and care that they deserve.

If you watch closely at 0:00 the main castle building looks integrated in the landscape in the old version but there is a sharp edge in the Definitive Edition. There is not enough flora covering parts of the wall. I would love to see this fixed for this building and other buildings.
Also applies to castle walls and many other things. For example, at 0:30 you can clearly see that the new wooden walls miss the moss texture and at 0:33 the barracks' ground tiles completely miss the game's color palette. Many structures would benefit from adding some sort of gradient at their bases. I believe this is purely an art direction issue and I HOPE it will be addressed. After all, the Stronghold Kingdoms was made using the original Stronghold's assets too, and looked good.
I remember getting the free demo disk at EB Games when I was like 8 years old. My dad took me back later to get me the game! Spent so many hours on it beating the campaign, missions, free building castles, and making scenarios. The base graphics still hold up to this day but its nice to have a visual update! Can't wait to beat The Rat, Snake, Pig and Wolf again!
I've grown up with stronghold crusader and fell in love with it, I still see myself installing it once in a while playing a couple of levels, this remake/definitive edition really intrigues me to experience the previous instalment as well, since I never really got into stronghold 2. The old school publishers still know how to treat the community right, much love and respect to the firefly team

Your 2d art style holds up so incredibly well, and I am glad that instead of overhauling it, you’ve simply improved on what was perfect! I WILL be buying this game, and will hopefully be looking forward to the Updated Stronghold Crusader one as well ;) - much love and support from a fan for the last twenty years :)

This is awesome, I sincerely want to thank all the team members for the love and care that went into this, especially for us fans ! A couple of issues would need to be ironed out before launch such as: •Rebalancing the resources needed for certain buildings (example: the iconography for the Armory is as a stone building yet it asks you 10 wood to build it, doesn't makes much sense) •The Scribe should be more in line with the original counterpart since it looks very out of place when compared to other characters that are remastered. •Post launch updates/support would be great and backward compatibility with the old mods/maps for the original game I hope you guys succed with this and I hope we would aslo see a Cursader DE in the near future. also balance resource gain on certain buildings like when i was playing i was a castle builder but you get rushers who jsut spam apples and then drown you out as they just keep massing arrows

To be honest this is the last game on my wishlist ever to be remade. The HD Edition is gorgeous and the gameplay is great even for modern audiences. Nonetheless happy about a Remake. The absolute only thing the original was missing is a Skirmish Mode which is for every RTS a MUST. PLEASE if this is in your Budget that would seal the deal for me.
Original fans are more likely will not want skirmish mode since Stronghold Crusader's interoduction of Skirmish mode technically that sort of mode was the basis for the gradual evolution of skirmish mode gradually all the way to what we currently have with Stronghold Warlords.
So basically it will be the Original stronghold game fans desires vs the desires of the fans of the stronghold games from Stronghold Crusader gradually onwards.
@@Crusadio I don't think the OG Stronghold has that feature. That's likely just a Castle Builder scenario with campaigns. Also multiplayer as far as I concern. Stronghold Crusader however has AI Lords and functioning skirmish mode so yeah
@@sunder739 That is my point a lot of the OG Stronghold fans complaints(since all they care about is the in-game story campaign gameplay) of later games in-game game play and other related content especially gradually from Stronghold Crusader onwards(since most of the Stronghold Games after Stronghold Crusader(except for possibly Stronghold 3) involved the gradual evolution of increasingly more gradually evolving advanced Skirmish mode even Stronghold Warlords with the Warlords system)).
Well, as someone who bought the game in 2002... This seems like a very nice remaster. I've been playing some Stronghold 2 recently, happy to see you guys revitalizing the original. It's still the best :)
Some of the buildings appear like they're floating due to a lack of foliage around the base. Like the windmill and the center building at 0:00. The 2001 version had no such issue. The barracks used to also blend in with the surrounding ground but in this new version, it appears very square and unrealistic. Minor change I would love to see fixed.
Why would you want an objectively worse form? Nostalgia? Stronghold 2 was vastly superior in its 3D form. I'm triggered by this because the same toxic mindset ruined a whole franchise (HOMM) because innovation should be forbidden, according to some
@@antonois would you just shut up for a second and see how successful the Definitive Editions of Age of Empires are ? 3D RTS games almost always feel and look bad-glitchy and unnatural unlike the classic timeless visuals of a 2D RTS
Take my money. Also a great, great way to boost multiplayer community would be adding a lot of ways to customize rules in online games. The more customisation, the better, for example: - cost of different units - cost of buildings - multiplier of a given building's production - multiplier of damage / hp / movement speed of different units - banned units / buildings Also an option to export/import set of rules would be needed. Let players balance the game for you, I'm sure that very quickly the best, most balanced set of rules would spread across the community.
I wish.. 1) Skirmish AI, of course 2) bigger maps 3) customizable shortcuts for selecting buildings and unit production 4) auto-unit generation (once resource is available). No more endless clinking... 5) auto resource selling (stockpile management). The stockpile is full my lord.. 6) customizable units (ex: crossbow + metal armor). I dream of it for 20 years 7) naval units (only for transportation, at first?) with units actually entering ships ( like moving towers). 8) moving siege towers that can have units over it 9) optional fog of war? Only that I ask...
How come there is no ruin/remain mark after buildings are teared down? Please Firefly you must bring them back, its very important, you can't just remove this feature.

Finally, something with 2D formula, even if only a remaster. Please integrate it with Crusader into one game, add bigger maps so that castles won't be so close to each other that they can shoot from their towers to each other and add option of bots in Europe/green setting. Maybe new factions with units and settings in future games/DLCs and it will be wonderful!
I hope, if the plan stands to ever release also a Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition, that you'll let the UCP team help with adding modsupport! We have a fully working pipeline up for that :D Just missing a frontend ^^ But it currently runs on DLL injection... so it might be cool if instead we could get actual modsupport :D (Thats my main wish for the Definitive Editions. It would probably not work for me, if they were not compatible with all the Community content out there, which the games really live onwards ontop of currently.... The Great and easy to understand map editor is the bayse line and the AIV Editor and so on, t hat was what kept Stronghold alive over all these years! The COmmunity!) That would be great, especially if we get Steam Workshop Support we coud integrate mods even easier, kinda like for AoE2 DE with Custom AIs and maybe even scriptable and unique AIs into this game. This would make Stronghold last forever!

We just need proper tooling! -> hence, we would pay firefly for updating the games APIs and tooling and engine and get over so many players just for good features that come by modding the game to your liking.
How did I miss this video until now ? Damn this takes me back ! First Stronhold I ever played was Crusader but it was so much fun I had to try the other ones eventually. Even ended up playing Stronhold Kingdoms and I still log on on it every day ! Though I only discovered the legendary english voice acting through meme videos on TH-cam, since until then, I've always known the french version, which too is quite legendary, I must admit :P Always had love for this franchise, so this is really interesting.
Awesome, a bit dissappointed that it seems that you did not add skirmish AI BUT thats only because i am a skirmish player and skirmishes against the AI is where i spend about 90% of my playtime in this series with. I will defenitely buy, play, enjoy and love this definitive edition though.❤ But because i am a skirmish player i really hope that stronghold crusader definitive edition will follow soon after this one. :)
Multiplayer, steam workshop, new campaign and more trails, NOW WE ARE TALKING!! I haven't bought a Stronghold game ever since Stronghold 2 because I felt that they went astray and deviated too much from what made Stronghold a great game, now I am excited to jump back in and get my friends to play it as well!

I got back into Stronghold a few months ago. I have played this game regularly from when I was 6 to my late teens. A timeless masterpiece. Glad to see this remastered. And the remaster looks so good. I loved the original artstyle, glad to see the game is keeping it.

This is nuts! I played this game for the first time in 2007 plus the Crusader and Extreme, I thought it will die, but now with this announcement, I am super excited about its revival
If only you can still release new content, DLCs, campaigns, missions, maps, new armies/factions with that same engine and visuals of Stronghold 1 and Crusader, I will Keep purchasing them all! Just please do that instead of the latest new 3D Strongholds ones that didn't deliver the same satisfaction as the old ones did!

Awesome! I hope you're inspired a lot by the AoE2 Definitive Edition! And maybe we'll get some nice destruction animations and physics too! Of course Stronghold is not a real e-sport game at this time but it will be worth trying for sure. And the campaign has to be played again anyway.
I'm so glad that you decided to add a definitive edition for Stronghold. One of the first games that I played and possibly the best RTS campaign that I ever played. Plus it also gives me hope that Stronghold Crusader *might* as well get a definitive edition in the long run. I do hope you will utilize this updated engine in the future and add additional content (maybe a campaign?) to SH. Or even further: Maybe consider creating a new game/setting based on this engine update.

So sick! That's what we want, remastered versions of our favorite childhood games. Even though crusader will forever be the best stronghold, the graphics and nostalgia in stronghold are amazing. Wonder if we can play skirmish against AI and choose colours.

I agree. In vanilla it looks more organic. Don't think it's an issue IF overall visual design stays coherent.

@@sunder739 That is my point a lot of the OG Stronghold fans complaints(since all they care about is the in-game story campaign gameplay) of later games in-game game play and other related content especially gradually from Stronghold Crusader onwards(since most of the Stronghold Games after Stronghold Crusader(except for possibly Stronghold 3) involved the gradual evolution of increasingly more gradually evolving advanced Skirmish mode even Stronghold Warlords with the Warlords system)).

Some of the buildings appear like they're floating due to a lack of foliage around the base. Like the windmill and the center building at 0:00. The 2001 version had no such issue. The barracks used to also blend in with the surrounding ground but in this new version, it appears very square and unrealistic. Minor change I would love to see fixed.

3D RTS games almost always feel and look bad-glitchy and unnatural unlike the classic timeless visuals of a 2D RTS

Take my money. Also a great, great way to boost multiplayer community would be adding a lot of ways to customize rules in online games. The more customisation, the better, for example:
- cost of different units
- cost of buildings
- multiplier of a given building's production
- multiplier of damage / hp / movement speed of different units
- banned units / buildings
Also an option to export/import set of rules would be needed. Let players balance the game for you, I'm sure that very quickly the best, most balanced set of rules would spread across the community.

2) bigger maps
3) customizable shortcuts for selecting buildings and unit production
4) auto-unit generation (once resource is available). No more endless clinking...
5) auto resource selling (stockpile management). The stockpile is full my lord..
6) customizable units (ex: crossbow + metal armor). I dream of it for 20 years
7) naval units (only for transportation, at first?) with units actually entering ships ( like moving towers).
8) moving siege towers that can have units over it
9) optional fog of war?

How come there is no ruin/remain mark after buildings are teared down? Please Firefly you must bring them back, its very important, you can't just remove this feature.

Dear Firefly, please add some weather and day/night effects to this legendary game. This will enhance the game's medieval atmosphere so much
Finally, something with 2D formula, even if only a remaster. Please integrate it with Crusader into one game, add bigger maps so that castles won't be so close to each other that they can shoot from their towers to each other and add option of bots in Europe/green setting. Maybe new factions with units and settings in future games/DLCs and it will be wonderful!

I hope, if the plan stands to ever release also a Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition, that you'll let the UCP team help with adding modsupport! We have a fully working pipeline up for that :D Just missing a frontend ^^ But it currently runs on DLL injection... so it might be cool if instead we could get actual modsupport :D (Thats my main wish for the Definitive Editions. It would probably not work for me, if they were not compatible with all the Community content out there, which the games really live onwards ontop of currently.... The Great and easy to understand map editor is the bayse line and the AIV Editor and so on, t hat was what kept Stronghold alive over all these years! The COmmunity!)
That would be great, especially if we get Steam Workshop Support we coud integrate mods even easier, kinda like for AoE2 DE with Custom AIs and maybe even scriptable and unique AIs into this game. This would make Stronghold last forever!

First Stronhold I ever played was Crusader but it was so much fun I had to try the other ones eventually. Even ended up playing Stronhold Kingdoms and I still log on on it every day !
Though I only discovered the legendary english voice acting through meme videos on TH-cam, since until then, I've always known the french version, which too is quite legendary, I must admit :P

Awesome, a bit dissappointed that it seems that you did not add skirmish AI BUT thats only because i am a skirmish player and skirmishes against the AI is where i spend about 90% of my playtime in this series with.
I will defenitely buy, play, enjoy and love this definitive edition though.❤
But because i am a skirmish player i really hope that stronghold crusader definitive edition will follow soon after this one. :)

I got back into Stronghold a few months ago. I have played this game regularly from when I was 6 to my late teens. A timeless masterpiece. Glad to see this remastered. And the remaster looks so good. I loved the original artstyle, glad to see the game is keeping it.

To me personally stronghold crusader is THE game of all strongholds.

I'm so glad that you decided to add a definitive edition for Stronghold. One of the first games that I played and possibly the best RTS campaign that I ever played. Plus it also gives me hope that Stronghold Crusader *might* as well get a definitive edition in the long run.
I do hope you will utilize this updated engine in the future and add additional content (maybe a campaign?) to SH. Or even further: Maybe consider creating a new game/setting based on this engine update.
Stronghold: Definitive Edition comes with a new 14 mission campaign :)
You guys need to seriously add a Skirmish mode with AI in Multiplayer with larger maps. Perfect opportunity to do it.

- Will the file structure be mod-friendly? In the original Stronghold, a lot of decent mod ideas were impossible because so much stuff was baked into the .exe file

I love both Stronghold 1 and Stronghold crusader 1 ; I grew up with them.
Something is different in this two games, Thank you very much for listing to your fans and I hope you remaster Stronghold crusader 1 too.
So sick! That's what we want, remastered versions of our favorite childhood games. Even though crusader will forever be the best stronghold, the graphics and nostalgia in stronghold are amazing. Wonder if we can play skirmish against AI and choose colours.
