Trying To Save My Biggest Jade Plant

- My biggest Jade plant has suddenly started to rot from an infection in its stem. In this video I try to save what I can by cutting out the infected stems to stop the infection from spreading to the whole plant. Unfortunately the rot has spread to the lower parts of the plant meaning most of the stems need cutting away, I will soon upload an update video to this to show what was salvageable.

That's mortifying, I was left two big jade's. They both had that problem one died before I could save it. The other I removed from pot, took of all the soil and let the roots dry out completely for 2-3 days, and then repotted it. This was during winter as well, thank God it's survived. It's now on the road to recovery.
Its difficult to recover the plant because the rot spreads without much sign until the stem becomes soft or falls off, and by that stage the rot has spread through a lot of the stems. Well done with managing to recover one of your plants, its not easy saving a Jade with rot.
OMG, I was screaming as you cut down that beautiful Jade tree. So sorry for the loss-hopefully the trunk will survive.
It was a very sad day when I had to cut back my biggest Jade plant in order to save it, but luckily the trunk survived and I also rooted the two largest branches.

I was amazed to see a plant almost identical to mine in shape and size , despite being very old it's doing very well!!!!! Ive just had to use green garden string in places to help support and shape it..... ...As we get older we all need a helping hand and a bit of support. 🤔🤔

I had this happen to my jade as well. I came back from quarantine and the leaves were falling off rapidly. The branches were also shriveled up. I cut down pretty far an thankfully I was able to save the main trunk and a couple of offshoots. It now has lots of new sprouts.

Hilarious that in 2017 video "The First Pruning Of My Jade Plant To Transform It To A Bonsai" at 2:00 you were cutting this plant and saying "I am not too worried about infection" and then this happens...
I would have had the cuttings you have discarded! The smaller healthy ones. The fun of growing is watching it happen.

This video was exactly what I was looking for, deep details about stem rot in jade plants. I’m currently trying to last ditch effort save my coworker’s jade plants that had too many stressful events at once recently and rotted quite up the stem and lost most of it’s leaves before either of us realized what had actually happened (we were treating it for powdery mildew that it caught from a neighboring office plant). It gives me hope that I can maybe save them! Crossing fingers.
I hope your able to save your Jade plant, if you have any branches that are rot free you can always plant them and make new plants, I grew the two largest branches from my tree into new plants.

This is really helpful. My jade is dropping branches too. Question please: one can clearly see the darker rot areas of the cross sections you’re showing. But there is also the center part of the stem that is just a different (lighter) color. Is that normal or also part of the rot/problem? I see no dark areas inside my stems, but there is the center that’s different color like yours. Should the inside of the stems be completely uniform? THANK YOU
There is a slightly differnt colour to the centre of the stem, as long as it's green or white then it's normal, if it's rot it will be more of a brown colour. Good luck with your jade, they can also drop branches due to over watering, low temperatures or low light levels.

I had similar issues with mine about the same size. Have had ti cut it right down to about 6 inches of trunk and hope it throws so more branches and leaves
its "corking" they cork at different times some in 5 6 yrs some take 40 yrs. just be sure not to water till the cuts are dry and scab over. same goes for the dwarf jade and gollum .. they are the best plants. thanQ for sharing hope it made it!
Awww.... That's so sad! I'm really sorry you lost your beautiful jade 😞 It was the plant that inspired me to make an effort and start over with my jades. Hope you manage to salvage what you can.
It happened so suddenly, it slowed down its growth, which I thought was because it was winter, and then suddenly dropped a branch. Its looking hopeful that some of it can be saved.
@@Gardeningat58N That's so strange! Even more so because it wasn't rot from over watering, and the infection started in the middle.... Did you ever figure out what it is?

Loulou's Corner I agree it was a lost to see a big beautiful Jade - but a blessing too , he was able to save & propagate rather than enjoy the beauty for time being but later lost the whole tree when it rots totally - it will grow back & blossom much prettier -
Excellent learning video. Each time you made a cut to show the rot, my bleed for your beautiful jade. The fact that you informed us that it was more likely bacterial was elogio. Showing the roots and lack of young roots was helpful too. Thanks, I'm glad you found my video informative. Rain water is good for watering plants as long as you don't live in an area with high levels of air pollution, you don't usually need to worry about it causing infections in plants unless it has been stagnant in a container for a long time. You can easily sterilise it by boiling it for 5 minutes and then allowing it to cool before use.
I keep my jade plants outside during the summer. I've not had any problems with rot so far, hopefully your tree recovers quickly.

@@comet123 I have two and they're still going strong! They're outside enjoying the summer rain rn. I trim them to keep their branches compact. Their trunks are dead thick. They're like 12 years old now.

I had this happen to me today, no rot though, just one of my 2 trunks broke off like yours, and a bunch of leaves fell off too, so I don’t know why! The other trunk looks healthy for now, so I’m hoping I can save it
Got some unwanted large jades. Brought em home, can’t stop them from dropping leaves and small stems. One is down to bottom large stem. Doesn’t seem to be an infection or rot. I keep cutting back, with no leaves forming.

Would the peroxide or bleach method have done anything with the main plant? I believe I am experiencing root rot with my 12yo jade. Crazy how you think you can have them completely figured out so long, and something so drastic can happen :( mine was very wide and short, and all branches began drooping. I have taken some smaller cuttings because it shot off a lot of new growth right when I believe the rot started.
I have seen others soak whole root rotted plants (roots in their soil, not the top of the plants) in peroxide or bleach mixtures for like 15 mins, then put them in a pot and leave them. Not even change the soil or do much else. Could doing this stop the infection of the rest of the plant? I've sprayed a fungicide to hopefully slow things in what's left... I thought to wait a few days to see if there is a slow/stop/change in what's happening, before doing a bleach soak. I'm just not sure that would even do anything though, with this specific plant? It seems like it helped others, but seeing that you lost your main plant makes me worry there's nothing to do!!

Quick question: in the next video when the two branches have calloused over (2 months later), and you plant them in (more than) 50% perlite ... did you give them ANY water at that point??? Or do you just leave them totally dry as they develop roots?
Yes I gave them a little water to make sure the compost and perlite mix wasn't completely dry, I watered them very little until I noticed the leaves starting to swell again, this was my indication that the roots had grown and were taking up water. I was still very careful with watering until there was healthy new growth.
Seems like you forgot to sterilize the cutting tool on each "second" cut. You should probably do it in between ever single cut, just to be safe. I hope it will be fine though.
I should have sterilised the tools each time, but I forgot on a few occasions. I did however spray the wounds with isopropyl alcohol to sterilise them and then allowed them to air dry for several weeks. The plant is now growing well and I even rooted the two biggest branches, you should be able to find the update videos on my channel.
Informative video. Sad to watch, but I'm happy your jade is now thriving as I saw in your update videos. Do you have any idea what could have triggered the rot? I've been growing multiple jades for 10 years now with a lot of success. Yesterday I was lucky enough to purchase a 45 year old jade plant. It's in desperate need of a re-pot. Do you suspect the soil and smaller pot could have caused rot? This is my worst fear
My jade plant has rotting branches and I removed them at the seam, however it looks like some mold / rot is still at that point on the main trunk. Should I be cutting back the main trunk further?
Yes I would also try save the stump , pot it. I think I follow your progress . I have many mini jade bonsai in progress

I bought a jade plant for a dollar and it's leaves started leaking when it got home. I asked over watering, could it have some sort of infection?

Oh man, this is terrible to see. I always loved seeing this tree, it had such a great base. I wonder what caused it. Hopefully someone on here can explain what happened.
I was so surprised when it dropped a branch and started to rot as its always been such a healthy plant. Fortunately I think I might be able to save the base.

It could have been caused by pruning a branch or a root with infected scissors, and then it made it's way through.
I use a great cactus mix. Retains some moisture but drains very well.
I heard the same soil is great for all succulent plants and Yucca trees!
My jade plant is ~15 yrs old and not even half that size. However, I've kept the poor thing in a tiny pot, so no wonder he didn't grow. Will transfer him in spring and see if he likes it :)
Your Jade should grow faster this year in the bigger pot, with enough sun and good soil they can grow at a decent speed. I've got one that's over 20 years old and its fairly small because its been in a small pot without much water or light. I've had cuttings from this plant surpass it in size in only four years.
What time of year should you prune? My plant desperately needs it but should I wait until spring?
Yes your best to wait, the best time is spring or summer, the plant needs to be in active growth and it needs a few months of the growing season to regrow it's leaves before it slows down again in autumn and winter. It is possible at other times of the year, but the plant will take a very long time to recover, and unhealthy plants could die.
Do you use 70% alcohol to clean/disinfect?

I had the same problem with my 4yo Jade, it started rotting from the middle.. and it was because i left to travel for 2 weeks and forgot to put it inside. I live in a tropical country so I need to water it once every 3 days.. thankfully it recovered after i water it and put it in shade.. my 4 yo gollum however, didnt make it

I just found my jade plant separate stem still in pot! It’s that big! Fingers crossed I couldn’t find any rot on mine. Maybe a cat broke it cuz I didn’t want to think someone did on purpose
Hopefully its not rot, have a look at the cut end and where it came from on the plant and see if there is any wetness, softness or discoloration. If it dries out and stays firm you should be fine.
Is it just too much moisture that can cause this bacterial/rot issues?

When you called that cutting tiny 😂😂😂 you can core out some of that middle trunk and it will produce shoots all the way around it it’s healthy on the putter part, also you could have cut the trunk at an angle to keep the length but get rid of the rot, the plant would have healed itself. Do you have an update on this plant?
Thank you for this video! Sorry to see your favorite tree rot like that. I was starting to see a similar problem with my tree, although i suspected the rot was at the roots into the stem since all the top branches were sprouting new growth with no real sign of trouble. i cut about 2 inches off the base 1/4 inch at a time and found the entire trunk width to be white/yellow like it was a sugar cane stalk! Luckily it didnt go all the way up the trunk as i still have my base/apex and all my branches i HOPE will survive. I just cut them now after watching this video. Im waiting for it to try and callus up, disinfected with isopropyl alc and cotton ball, and then will replant in new soil. Its a fairly young trunk, only about 3/4 inch in diameter. I wonder if theres an optimal soil for this. I was planning just to pot it in a small bonsai put with perlite/vermeculite mix. If theres a reason I shouldnt do this i hope someone lets me know xP
At that size it should root ok, my biggest branches were about that size and they rooted, although the larger branches do take a while to fully root so you need to make sure they are well supported so that they do not fall over. A bonsai pot might not be the best as they are so shallow it is hard to keep such top heavy branches secure. I would recommend a deeper pot and then once rooted transfer them to a bonsai pot buy cutting off the roots at the bottom. Make sure your mix can hold some water and nutrients, but a very well drained mix is best, if your only using perlite and vermiculite make sure you mix a small amount of soil or compost in so there is some nutrients.

I feel like my jade plants look worse than your so called rotting ones haha! But yea i have this feeling maybe they’d be happier in a sand based soil than a perlite based soil.. sometimes it seems to hold moisture in an odd way maybe, mine is just in soil i have a few from the mother plant from my gran when she passed, but this vid was a gem thank! I can possibly makes lots of cool plants tree looking things and give to friends to neaten things up and check the stems for rot in the process!

Gutting! Happened to me last year I lost the whole plant. Started again, I’ve just defoliated mine to give off smaller leafs.
what u expect... that big tree in a small pot like that one .. no room for roots no air ... I am not wondering that tree started to rot in that small pot. The main thin in bonsai is not have have the smallest pot at all cost .. it has to be correspondent with the measurments of the tree to have plenty of room for roots which should have get enough oxigen an space.
Root rot in these seems worse then desert roses. I sure hope I don’t lose my 40 year jade. Maybe just no water winter and only water when temp over 80?

I do have a question. Someone I know will be cutting a large, probably 2 inch diameter, branch from their jade, which is outside. Is there any way I could save it and possibly get it to root?

I am having a similar issue with my huge Jade plant, I would really appreciate some help. I don’t know if it’s an infection, I only have two plants inside my house the and a Christmas cactus. We usually go South for the winter and these plants seem to thrive. I usually really focus on my outside plants. I really love my jade though, can you help me?
do you have her inside the house? They don't do well inside, if you have her inside at least move her next to a window.
@@fdpcompdm yes she was inside, we live in British Columbia in Canada and she wouldn’t like the outside temperature here. She is gone unfortunately. We couldn’t save her.
How long did you wait for it to callous over ?
I waited a few months before planting which is much longer than necessary, but it calloused over within a week or two.

Hi, my jade plant is about the size of yours but all my trunks are bendy and soft. But look healthy except if you brush past any leaves they just drop off. Any thoughts?
It could be a few causes, bendy soft trunks are either due to rot or from low light levels. As for leaf drop, this is usually due to rot, over watering or cold temperatures.
Sad to have to lose a lovely plant. Possibly using a glazed plant pot that can't allow the plant to breath and water to evaporate.
It was strange that the rot seemed to start in the middle of the stem, as I would have expected it to start at the roots. The base of the plant has now stopped rotting and is showing signs of life.
@@Gardeningat58N Good news Alex it's starting to show signs of growing back. May be you was wright and the wound you found was were the decease got in. But if I was you I would still plant it in a bigger pot. Best wishes.
Karl Harrison I agree! I only use terra-cotta pots. I learned my lesson when I moved I put my plant in such a pot and I lost it, at least I was able to start new ones and three years later I gifted two of the four I started..
Maybe focus lower so we can see the plant vs the door and the knob. Interesting video.
You reacted quick mine gone without noticing. Dropped the leaves and left with one stem instead of 3.
I was surprised how far the rot had spread before there was any obvious signs. Fortunately I was able to save some of the plant.

Hello i have the cutest little bonsaï jade plant the leaves are unusually small and i haven't noticed any growth too , also it did grow a mini baby plant from its roots which was growing really well and one day i really slightly touched it and it fell off , really slightly ! I was shocked , the baby plant did not develop roots , and my main plant doesn't seem to be growing at all , i am really concerned i love it so much , please can you help me figure out what i should do to help it thrive again ? Plz plz plz

Is cutting the plant stems necessary when overwatered or should I just let it air dry after getting it out of the soil and repot it after a few days ?

I have a curly Jade and a crassula fingers jade and they keep looking wrinkly in the leaves. I have watered it twice so I dont know why they are still wrinkly.
Perhaps the soil filtrates the water TOO well and doesn't retain much, or it's kinda hydrophobic and water doesn't flow too well!

How about giving some of the smaller cuttings away to friends (conserve).
I do that. Also propogate n then grow for 6 months or so then gift to my moms nursing home. The residents ard sooo happy to have something ti care for. U could also sell them. Some i propogate n then just let grow fir 3 months or so n sell for $5 on fb marketplace. It helps me to recoup the cost if what can be an expensive hobby

What funagacide what does it do?
I’ve cleared up rot in jade trunk similar to yours using a hydrogen peroxide solution. One tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide per cup of water. Use it to treat the tree, either by soaking rotted trunks/cuttings or using it to water the plants.
Painful to see such a beautiful large tree cut apart like this without treating it first.

@@fdpcompdm I've been keeping my Jade Plant inside since the end of September, but I have noticed leaves dry out and fall off.
@@xXLunatikxXlul That's the first sign of deterioration of the plant and if you leave her there it's only going to get worse. Jade loves lots of light, it doesn't need to be direct sun light all the time and she love air too. if you have no alternative but to keep her inside at least move her next to a window that has lots of light.
@@xXLunatikxXlul if it doesn't snow where you live it is absolutely safe to have her outside if it does snow then bring her inside but have her next to the window. They are so pretty inside but unfortunately if you don't have tons and tons of light inside the house the jade is going to fade away.

I just cant throw them in tbe trash. So i propogate almost everything. Some i will keep for quite awhile - until its a decent sized plant. Then i either sell it on fb or i donate to the nursing homey mom lived at. Uf not to the home then i give them to the home to give to residents. They seem very happy to get them. Others ill just get started n as soon as they are stabilized but still a small size i put on fb fir $5. Its a small way to recap so e of the expenses that my plants incur - n i dont hear the plant crying in tbe trash. Loll

You better avoid ceramic pot. Please use terracotta pot instead, The extra water will be evaporated.
Lost my 15 year old jade last year to this. My cuttings are doing great though!
Looks like a plant that has been sitting for too long in water. There may have been a problem with the drainage. Maybe the roots were clogging the hole a the bottom of the pot.
Pierre Van Eeckhout can you please advise me as mine is loosing its leaves. The leaves were not yellow and still very green but almost all had fallen out. One of the branch had fell off too. I have this tree for over 10 years and had reported it recently. The pot I use is quite big and I put it’s trunk a bit deeper inside the pot. I put it next to the window on the south east facing the same spot it’s always been. I really don’t know what happened to it.
@@atinylittlething looks like something drastic happened to your crassula. Can it be frost, or a sudden change in temperature ? Or was it exposed to sunlight suddenly for a whole day ? Repotting a plant in new soil should not cause leaves to fall. Did you add fertilizer in the new soil ? My advice is wait two-three weeks without watering to see if the plant gets worse of if new leaves start shooting out, especially if you have fertilized it. You could then drench the soil for 10 to 15 minutes with tap water to wipe out any excess fertilizer. If none if this happened, don't worry, your plant will grow its leaves back in a matter of weeks.
Pierre Van Eeckhout no more frost here now as it’s getting warmer 8-10 C during the night and can be up to 23 C during the day. My jade plant only got the sun in the morning for about 2-3 hrs. I didn’t add any fertiliser in the soil but mixed in with succulent, sand and some pea gravels. At that spot where I placed it, in the winter it’s bright but not quite direct sunlight but in spring and summer the sun will shine on it directly as the sun has rotated. As I stated before I had it for many years and it stay at the same spot and I have no problems with it before but just now. I really don’t know what happens. Almost all of the leaves were falling out so fast within few days. It was very healthy with green and very big leaves all around. Oh I moist it’s leaves with water in the foggy which I never done it before that might be the case?
