    I've been really enjoying running Ravens and many of them fall below the 1000 BV mark. Lots of great variants with a wide variety of weapons and utility items. Also while they're a tad slow for a light, they tend to have decent mobility and survivability for what they are. I'm actually considering getting a forth Raven and running an all raven lance some time just for laughs with mixed loadouts.

    Funny thing, my first exposure to Battletech was when a game called "MechWarrior 2" was bundled with the PowerMac my parents got when I was in high school. You could customize the load-outs on 'mechs, and I basically created the closest thing to the Firestarter-H possible in the game with 10 ER medium lasers and a heat sink that was one of the best 'mechs in the game, able to complete any mission that didn't need a long range weapon.

    The Dasher is great omnimech for dropping Elementals on your opponents and backing up the ensuing mess caused. As someone who plays mostly in later eras I got a few under 1000BV Clan Invasion mechs for clanners and clantech enjoyers.
    - Howler/ Baboon is a speedy light clan battlemech that fills shin kicking missle spitting gremlin role. I enjoy the original for the 3 clan lrm 5 and endless ammo along with variant 6 (Dark Age+ though) for being 550BV.
    - Mist Lynx/ Koshi is a clan omni and it has many configuration that make it good at removing infantry or spotting and with 7/11/6 movement it'll get where it needs to go. Prime, A, E, H are all fine choices maybe the D if you hate VTOLs.
    - Piranha barely squeeks in at 998BV designed as an anti-infantry scout with 9/14 movement, it does a great job shredding back armour with it's 12 machine guns with a clan ER small laser and 2 ER Medium lasers for dealing with harder units. Variant 2 is cheaper at 874BV and swaps the MGs for ER micro lasers and the ER small and ER medium lasers for heavy versions.
    In double checking some info I found a Kit Fox Config V that has 2 ER small lasers and Arrow IV for 974 BV so go out and scare somebody with that.

    That Dasher H is pretty sweet, going 'all in' on the ultra high speed ultra short range disintegration beams.
    If you ever run into a player who uses nothing but these 800bv monsters, I'd remind you that LRM carriers cost just as much and thunder-augmented munitions are a thing. Minefields don't give a crap how high your 'to hit' number is.
    Oh, 'Speed is armor' huh? Well how much actual armor you got on those legs, hmmm?
    (Seriously though, very good mech picks all around. Each plays a specific role really well, and for an excellent price.)

    Interesting list.
    I definitely agree with the Firestarter Mirage and The Davion Spider.
    I would have added the JVN-10F Fire Javelin on my own list.
    Used correctly they always seem to earn back their BV and make their presence known.
    Sure the Jenner is better armored and has a faster ground speed
    but the JVN just keeps pouring it on for nearly 200 BV less.
    It's one case that I'd often rather punch then kick against larger mechs.

      I definately prefer the armor of the F over the N, but in combined arms environments
      or if BV is limited the N definitely has it's place. Sometimes I field 1 of each.
      I usually prefer the JVN over the Firestarter because you don't have to forgo
      weapons fire to punch. A lucky medium laser hit to the rear torso of many
      common heavy mechs opens them up enough that the 3 point punch can penetrate.

    Ouch it looks like pretty much every Mech I love heavier then a light class is over 1,000 BV (The Phoenix Hawk 1D used to be under 1,000 before the point values were revised in 2007)

  • @Cobalt-60
    @Cobalt-60 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Here is one that I can almost can guarantee you have not tried. The 3025 tech TRC-4B (the 96 pts of armor and 4x small lasers, 50-ton version of the Chameleon) that moves 6/9/6 and is there to protect your recon Wasps, Locusts, and Stingers from Spiders, Assassin's, and Jenners. BV (2.0) 999 pts. LL, 2x MLs, 4x SLs, 2x MGs. Only 10 head sinks, but if used appropriately against the mechs that can close with your striker recon mechs, it will not be a problem. And it is a universally available training mech.

    • @TrailblazerBT
      @TrailblazerBT  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah interesting, I've played with it in Crescent Hawks Inception as a boy but never in real BT. I guess the reason I never tried it is that a PXH-1 seems better to me? No matter how you use it you're going to have a lot of weapons going to waste unless you shut the thing down with heat, and the armor is real low

    • @Cobalt-60
      @Cobalt-60 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The PXH-1 (especially the -1D variant) IS a better choice, but does not meet your 1,000 pts. BV restriction. This does. If you are allowing mods (and you would have to check if it stays under 1,000 pts.), drop 0.5 tons of MG ammo and add 8 pts of armor back onto it. Again, it's purpose is two-fold, to command a recon lance made up of 20 ton mechs AND protect them from the 7/11 or 8/12 mechs that are the only ones fast enough to run down the 6/9 Stingers and Wasps. The assumption, especially in campaign operations, being that you have Stingers, Wasps, Chameleons, and Phoenix Hawks in light lances because they are faster than the 5/8 mechs, but also still have hands so they can carry off supplies from raids on enemy depots. The Chameleon actually fills these roles really well. And provides pretty good anti infantry protection with the MGs and SLs.

    • @Cobalt-60
      @Cobalt-60 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And while 96 points of armor IS light it is more than the: ASN-21 (72 pts), ASN-101 (64 pts), CDA-3C (64 pts), JR7-As & -Ds (64 pts), or MON-68 (88 pts), with only the LRMs on the Assassins, LL on the Mongoose, and PPC on the Cicada being able to match or out-range the LL on the TRC-4B {and all create heat issues as the Cicada is the only one with greater than 10 [it has 11] heat sinks}.
      The only 7/11 move "intro tech" (i.e. 3025 tech) mechs (the 8/12 mechs will not have enough weapons to deal with the TRC-4B IMO) that have more armor than the TRC-4B are the HER-2M (120 pts, but no JJs and MLs are longest range weapons) and the JR7-F (120 pts with 5x JJs but still MLs as longest range weapons).

    You should try the panther. Dont bring one. Bring two or many if possible. Focus fire, rotate out mechs as they get damaged. Stock panther is 769. Jump 3 spaces and fire the ppc to stay heat neutral, jump 4 and fire to build 1 heat. Ideally you want to run and jump until you can get into heavy woods or behind light cover. Then go stationary and fire until you get hit. Then fall back behind another panther and make them fight through that one to get the one that is already damaged.
    At 769 bv you can take 7 of them and upgrade 2 of those to 3/4 pilots and have 125 points left over in a 6k list. Your opponent on a 6k list is probably bringing 4 mechs. Think about that. You can basically roll up on them and fire 7 ppc shots at a single mech. If you can do that for two turns and get 4-5 hits on a single mech its probably backing off. Now in that 2 turns you probably had 2 panthers get mauled, but likely still have both ppcs functional. Fall back with them behind the other 5 and keep shooting. Your opponent has a problem. He cant rotate as well because he probably has 1 or 2 mechs that weren't meant to brawl and cant take hits for long at all. Its even worse if he has brought a fast light mech that cant take more than 1 or 2 hits before falling apart.
    Now you might be thinking that the panther isnt all that amazing, but look at the numbers. In this scenario you got 7 ppcs that will be firing as soon as you have even a tiny chance to hit. You will keep firing them until you lose them and you have plenty of mechs to hold the line while damaged mechs fall back. Oh and mass panthers will also get you that wonderful initiative advantage. I cant say enough about how nice it is to no move mechs in the back and watch you opponent have to move more tactically vulnerable mechs.
    Where this strat comes up short is melee. You do not have melee capabilities due to lacking weight. So dont melee other than attempting to kicks to get someone to fall over. Your bread and butter is mass ppc fire.
    At later tech you can move up to an ER large laser with targeting computer for a couple hundred more bv. Im not certain its worth it tbh but it can be an interesting numbers game. You basically go stock pilots and lose 1 mech but now you got better brackets, with better to hit numbers, but slightly lower damage.

    Solid choices for pure mech games. However, the best mech for under 1000 BV, and for the roles you're talking about, is almost always a VTOL. Whether spotting, back-sniping, or providing indirect fire, these things punch WAY above their weight when utilized properly, and are a serious force multiplier. Plus, they're so fast that they usually don't have to make the PSRs that jumping mechs do. Cruising speed is enough to shoot and scoot, even if they only have level 1 terrain or woods to hide behind. Obviously, they don't work in vacuum, but then neither do a lot of cheap mechs. Not enough heat sinks to function properly.
    If I HAD to go with a mech, though, from outside your excellent list, it would be the OstScout. Nobody ever pays attention to that thing, so it can pretty much bounce around the battlefield at will, revealing FoW and spotting for indirect fire against enemy indirect fire units. At 497 BV for the basic POS, you can take TWO of the damn things for under 1000 BV if you wish, which just makes it even less likely that anyone will even bother shooting at one of them when they've got bigger problems to deal with. Their main weakness is that, unlike your picks, they can't really help out in a clutch if your strategy is poor or the dice do not favor you. They are purse scouts, hence why a lot of players will ignore them. Really, it would be better if they were quads, to avoid the PSR checks as much as VTOLs can, but I don't think there are any quads under 1000 BV. Right?

      light lance v light lance.
      since the smallest unit we used was company, BV or other points systems were never very useful.
      how do you assign and balance points on a battalion?
      1 company of mechs
      1 company of armor

    This 'mech is useless by itself. It will get surrounded, it does not have enough weapons.
    Roles: rank filler, if in 3050's the Hoplite 4d at 1022 BV will be a end game killer.
    In a line, the speed is often 4/6 or 5/8. The goal is to move enough and have the guns bear on the enemy "en masse". The Hoplite is designed to sit in the middle of the line and participate in the line/rank fighting. It protects the back of other more important 'mechs by virtue of being cheap, massive and in the way AND it's not worth your time shooting it.
    Why shoot the hoplite when you can shoot a rifleman, marauder, warhammer, Victor, etc ?
    And at the end of the battle, you have a functional Hoplite picking off damaged 'mechs left and right and people will despair at the sheer useless mass of internals, heatsinks, that it has.
    This is one of the best crap 'mech in Battletech.
