    Always enjoy seeing your updates. Your plants are looking really FANTASTIC! I'm so happy when I see that you are also growing some tropicals in your collection. WOW! Loved seeing Laura's grape vine. What a nice harvest that will be. Sounds like you are headed to cooler weather. Thank goodness down here in southeast FL the temps have dropped just a tad, but enough to make it more comfortable. Thanks for your videos - they make my day!

    Nigel, I don't know where you are, but our temps here get a little extreme, as well as the weather too, it can be very unpredictable, But seems you have a amazing place there, I couldn't imagine having the opportunity of having my own place, or to have a area to truly grow, and call my own, several years ago, I got injured by two different employers, and now have issues with the after effects of the injuries, but as well as I have now been diagnosed with several health conditions, some with no cure, just managing the symptoms. but I truly enjoy plants, and the outdoors, and hope that one-day, I can enjoy this dream I have.

    We seem to experience the same weather (roughly) here in Vermont. I used to love the summer weather cooling off and getting ready for the beautiful foliage on the trees. Since really diving into bonsai "full time", I now don't have the same type of feelings due to the growing season coming to a close. 😐

    Wonderful recovery on your Portulacaria forest Nigel!
    You could try 'injuring' the spots on the trunk or branches by pricking them. Sometimes this will stimulate them to push out new shoots. Easy to try before cutting back flush, and nothing lost if it doesn't work. Best of luck!

    A rocket stove mass heater for your greenhouse! Also, search "Rodney Hampton Death of the Rocket Stove" where he uses composting leaves against the back wall of his greenhouse to raise the temp!
    My design is a sort of ditch with a wall against aluminum sheet (for a retainer) on the north side. Rake it out next Summer. Hopefully the bones hold out a little longer.

    your lithops seem a little overwatered. Even slightly misting them may be too much water already.
    You can check this by touching the side of the lithops and gently sqeezing it just a little. It should be neither mushy nor too hard and just give in to your pressure a tiny bit.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Christian, I back off a the watering now as the temperatures are getting cooler!

    • @bonsaipiper3773
      @bonsaipiper3773 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBonsaiZone Christian is correct. I once had lithops. Basically if you start to see them getting wrinkles, even the slightest, then they can be watered. However, if the new leaves are pushing out, you do not need to water even if the older leaves are shriveled. If the new set are slightly shriveled as are the old ones you can water. Once the old leaves dry up and I mean DRY DRY DRY up you can remove them with tweezers. But if they don't come off with a gentle tug, leave them on. There is still moisture in the leaf base that the lithop is using. Hope this helps.

    Hey Nigel, I love your TH-cam channel. I have a question. When you make a big root pruning Is there a possibility, that the root cuttings can grow again? I have a typical Ikea Ficus bonsai, that i have made shorter (air layering). I will try to regrow these rootcuttings. Best wishes from Denmark.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a new tree can be grown from root cuttings, it's harder than top cuttings and I think you need high humidity for the root cutting to sprout new growth.

    What kind of soil do you recommend for baobabs? I have 4 seedlings from this year, but they dont grow that hard, maybe i should repot them, or should i wait? I live in the Netherlands so it is a temperate region

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Karst, the Baobab trees need a very free draining soil to avoid root rot, especially in the winter. I have mine in my bonsai soil, it's half perlite and 1/2 turface. I sift the soil to get a 3 to 4 mm particle size and to remove the fine dust.
      I can water the trees daily in the summer, but once fall comes, I stop watering it, the tree loses it's leaves and then they sit dormant all winter. In spring the leaves begin to come out again and you can begin watering more.
      I would re pot them late winter and if you do any root work, be sure to let the cuts dry out for a few weeks and then plant in dry soil. Wait for the leaves to come out and slowly increase the watering. I just mist the tree at first and then when it's growing strongly, I switch to the watering can. Full sun is recommended.
