As a man who's initial impressions were "why be offended over this" over the Muc Off ad, Producer Emily's explanation linking it to womens discomfort in male dominated spaces is really interesting and eye opening - something that I think is very valuable for men in all areas of life (not just cycling) to understand. Very well put.

Yes, this. I was going to come here and say that Emily’s comment should be shared in various forums that have nothing to do with cycling. She describes the phenomenon perfectly. This comment coming from a youth worker, where inclusion and non-toxic communication is crucial. Well done Emily, huge props.

Thank you, Producer Emily, for speaking about your experience as a woman in the world and in cycling spaces. Hyper-sexualizing situations may seem harmless enough here and there but it all adds up and before you know it, you're going through a nontrivial amount of your day on guard and nervous. And if it's not just some random person on the corner doing it, but a global brand, that effect is magnified.

As an old fart in his 50's, I think the very lucid explanation of why Muc Off's ad is not a good thing (incredibly relevant input from Emily) was spot on. She Clearly set out why this perpetuates or at least contributes to a culture where women can feel unsafe. That's why it isn't enough to say 'it's a joke'. Men need to wake up. As decent blokes, we shouldn't want women to ever have to feel the way she describes (so eloquently).

Genuinely incredible monologue by Emily on why women don’t feel safe and while she says she doesn’t speak for all women, it’s sad to think she likely speaks for the majority!
As the father of a young, active daughter, it both scares and angers me in equal measure what kind of world she will be growing up in.
The response from the majority of well meaning men of *shrugs ‘we’re not all like that’ isn’t good enough and unless we actively get on board to call out and eliminate the sort of behaviour that Emily sadly experienced in Richmond Park, our mothers, sisters, daughters and granddaughters are destined to experience the same.
Anyway, just my tuppence ha’penny worth but well said that woman. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

She then moved to our nearest city - Chester - and going running with her there, on roads, I was genuinely absolutely shocked by the amount of cars slowing down and leery comments (presumably before the shouter realised that the person running in front of my daughter was a bloke) And then she tells me that it is just absolutely routine

25 % of women experience sexual assault or attempted sexual assault in their lifetime (UK statistic). 97 % of women in the UK experience sexual harassment in their life. The numbers in other western countries like Germany, USA, etc. aren't really better.
The problem is that a good amount of guys only start reflecting their douchy behavior until they have a daughter ... because they know how men treat women from themselves.
I personally don't think I've sexually harassed anyone, but I've definitely been unaware about women's issues until I started dating my first girlfriend (now wife). I've never felt unsafe walking through the city at night. But that's not the experience my wife always had.
So I think it's also our responsibility to call out creepy and douchy behavior of other men.

I am male, 194cm/85kg (6″4/13st5), three-day beard, broad shoulders for a cyclist (44cm handlebars). From time to time, when a car approaches from behind, it honks wildly, and the male passengers open the windows, shout at me and drive on. The first time this happened, I was scared and stopped to check my bike, thinking it was a warning that something was wrong with it! But the bike was fine! I couldn't explain what that meant.
When I spoke to my daughter about it once, she said: 'You're wearing a man's bun, and a ponytail on the bike because of the helmet. If you make yourself so small on the bike with your shoulders tucked in and they can see the ponytail, they think you're a woman. It's called "cat calling". It happens to me all the time, and sometimes it makes me uncomfortable when a man walks behind me on the sidewalk, even if he's not doing anything like that.' My daughter was 14 at that time.

Agu 5 years ago was one of the cheapest cycling clothing brands, I have a few pieces I purchased online from a German shop. One of the reasons is Brexit and overall cost, and the second is that ALL brands tend to start at lower-end prices, and gradually go to the very expensive level. Rapha is crazy expensive, with a very generic cut and quality, nothing "technical", I use X-bionic as proven top high-tech, (they got other 200 awards), and the best value for money but it is not the mainstream for "professionals" they simply don't sponsor or promote their products.

A good coffee is never overrated but it depends on what you define as a good coffee. I tried a lot of small roasters and they all can`t keep up with the Italian roasters that I prefer, but they are much more pricier (sometimes more than double). We use to buy things for a higher price when we think it must be special. By the way it is sometimes the same thing with so called boutique bikes.

Quick personal story about the direct to consumer brand.
Last year, I wanted to upgrade my bike. With a few years of experience with previous bikes, I new that I was looking for something specific: shorter reach than most race road bikes (back issues), shorter crank length (knee issues), with a bike that could hold a big cassette for my big mountainous rides. So I made a big Google Sheets table to try to calculate bike geometries and check which could potentially fit.
I went to the 5 big bike shops in my city. Only one could have a proper discussion about bike geometry (my favourite bike shop!), but unfortunately didn't sell something that fitted me. One (the Giant shop) even complained that I did a pre-bike fit to have more precise geometry requirements for my bike. None of them would let me try the bikes for a few kilometres to check the feeling I had on them.
I think that bike shops need to understand that they have to become wise and sound adviser for potential buyers and not just Sales people casually selling bike stuff.
On the other hand, I'm always mad at people that I see buying bikes after falling into marketing traps, or getting advices from bike shops just to make their minds about an online purchase. And at those who want to see bike shops doing things for free all the time. Servicing a bike costs time, and a lot of money. But the market prices are so high and the hype so huge about many tech gimmicks that unfortunately entry bike cost is one of the biggest factor for purchase decisions.
On my side, I found a shop in another city that sold a bike assembled in my hometown and they were able to send it to me. I then changed and assembled all the remaining custom parts I wanted thanks with my local bike shop. I think that's the best of both world.

5 years ago, GCN was the first place I checked for bike related content. But, IMO, they are no longer relatable for at least half of their content. It’s too bad really, but that makes room for more meaningful content, like yours! Keep up the good work. Maybe if we stop talking them, they will get the hint.

Hey Chris and Jessie, love the show. With regards to Jeffs video about narrow bars. You didn't mention the second half of the video. The aero wasn't the point but the tucked in position allowed Jeff to attack/sprint more easily. I personally ride 38cm bars but that was always from a confort stand point.

Speaking about those Challenge Tires, Those things were a battle to install. I just took mine off a week ago, after about 4 or 5 months because I just wanted to install a wider tire to get a feel for how I would like wider tires. I couldn't get the Challenge tires off so I cut them off ruining the tires. It's a good thing I never had a puncture while riding because I would have been stuck. I got blisters on both thumbs during my attempts. I will never buy those tires again.

I hate Nic's opinion on DTC brands. There are PLENTY of car mechanics that don't sell cars. Plenty of washing machine repair people that don't sell the product new. Bike shops trying to gate keep selling new bikes is petty and is simply giving bad service in the long run. And he says it himself, Canyon bikes have plenty of issues... they are ripe for selling maintenance then no? It just doesn't hold water IMO...

About women feeling threatened all the time: I heard a female comedian say something along the lines of "Imagine walking around people that are physically stronger and bigger than you are and imagine they might be attracted to you. Could you stop them if they really wanted to do something? No."

Great, intelligent show! As a female cyclist, i really appreciated Emily’s explanation. I also think that people don’t “overreact”, but they (women, minorities, etc) are just fed up from dealing with b.s. for so many decades, and the rest of the public, who haven’t been putting up with stuff for years don’t understand, but the rest of us are just “OMG, it just won’t stop - and we’re deep into the 21st century”. Again, thanks for the continued intelligent, balanced and interesting content.

@@SpicyTrifongo- good point - it objectifies gay men as well as women. Thanks for speaking up - I think we often forget that the gay male body is often forgotten as it is often a target of corporate sexism too.

As a Canadian, I find that buying online from Europe is often the only way to get stuff. A lot of items just aren't sold here at all, even American brands, and a lot of stuff is way overpriced. I think that a lot of the blame goes on manufacturers who don't make their products available in certain markets for reasonable prices. There's no reason that something should cost twice a much to buy locally as it does to buy it online, shipped across an ocean.

GCN have had kit made for their filming that's then made available for purchase - I wouldn't buy it (wouldn't have a clue what size to fit a middle age person that is a distance from 'race weight'!) but don't see what the problem is adding it to their shop. No one has to buy it.
If I had £200 for some shorts I'd want to go to a shop to see them before. Fair play to anyone that can afford them though.

Your point about there are good and bad bike shops is spot on. Do not mind paying a little more at a good LBS. Issue is in my experience there are more bad ones out there. In times like these when the industry is struggling, hoping customers remember who the good ones are and support them.

I haven't been to other places in Spain yet but last year I had a chance to visit Girona. I fell in love immediately. I would say the "scene" is actually much bigger than I've seen anywhere else. Or maybe I should say much more concentrated. Never seen so many great cafes and bike shops in such a small area. I live in San Francisco Bay Area so it's not uncommon for me to run into hundreds of cyclists on a 4 hour bike ride but Girona is so small that you step out the door and immediately see dozens of super high end bikes roll by. So if you're a casual cyclist who cringe at that performance focused road cyclist it really might be a turn off. I personally really love looking at high end gear and training 12 hours and in that sense I LOVE that Girona has a high concentration of that kind of mindset. I really, REALLY would love to move there and we're seriously trying to make it happen.
