    Tell me your weirdest wedding exit stories! I got stabbed with a sparkler by the mother of the groom once. I also had a horse drawn carriage nearly run away in a city. :)

      A had a grooms father throw bird seed right into the photographers mouth while exiting on purpose because the photographer was so controlling and forceful the whole wedding day 😝

    I'm shooting my first wedding Friday, Matt. I'm super thankful for all your content. This was something I was thinking about this morning, so it's perfect that you posted this today!!

    Got a question! Thanks for posting the video. It's so helpful. If you are on F1.4 how do you make sure you are in focus all the time? I mean, things happen quickly, you are moving backwards and you're focussing manually. How do you pull that off buddy?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jorrit! I've had a lot of practice. Also with the 24mm lens, even at f1.4 it doesn't have a super shallow depth of field.

    I have to photograph for my next wedding client sparkling group photo and exit. I will be using Canon 5D Mark ii, 50mm f/1.8, 24-70 lens. I am confused if I should use 24-70 at 2.8 or move all the way back and use 50mm to take the wide shots. What would you suggest?

  • @Playerdrew10
    @Playerdrew10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's so cool to see someone else film the exit like I do (pan up to sky as car drives away).
    Also, looks like the sparklers were starting to run low. That's happened to me so many times. Sometimes the couple come right out, and other times they can keep people waiting (up to 15 min 😆).
    Keep up the great work, Matt!

    Hey Matt, great video. How do you make your educational videos like this? Mainly, how do you get the 60fps raw footage to play back in real time picture in picture, and then still have the super smooth 24fps finished product at the end?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks David! I edited this video on a 23.976fps timeline and dropped the 60fps footage into it without interpreting. It played back decently smoothly. :)

    • @ek93765
      @ek93765 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like Jeli said, it might be because of the amount of light you lose following 180° rule. Also, 120fps has a crop of 2.2x (which will narrow the angle of view) and doesn't do full sensor readout (which will have less quality than 60fps). I think he knew 60fps was enough for the amount of slowmo he wanted.

    Hey matt, appreciate the video! How do you work with the photographer for this? I have had several photographers that will not allow us to do a follow out angle from the back because they are scared we will be in their shot, and some want a really wide angle shot of everything and don't want us following them with the front angle..

    • @marekjaworski5965
      @marekjaworski5965 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm wedding photographer that got into video and whenever I'm videographer at event I'm just not going to be pushed by photographer. Of course you have to talk to photog and bride about strategy. My strategy is quite simply, I ask bride and groom to run back and forward so we have good video and photos. If sparklers are good/long enough it easily doable. Thats give us 3 runs and everybody is extra happy. Of course I encourage B&G and quests to have fun while doing that and am not just standing in silence.

    • @AndrewBentonElevationFilms
      @AndrewBentonElevationFilms 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely, I usually just do it anyways, but it is nice to work well with the photographer I find as I have gotten some good recommendations from photographers & this seems to be one of the few areas where I have run into conflict often...

    • @swoonfilms
      @swoonfilms 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's more than one way to do something. I will switch it up depending on what the photographer needs. I'm usually on a monopod so I'm not following anything. I prefer to have them walk towards me. My second will follow behind usually with a glidecam. If we can't do that then I might have one camera filming slow motion, couple walks out part of the way, then I get out of the way while my second on a glidecam follows from the front with the photographer. Everyone is happy. OR! I've even filmed from a ladder before. During a sparkler exit you also have time because it takes time for the sparklers to burn through. You can direct the couple to exit again and get a different angle. So many ways to do this but it's always fun to see how other companies do it. I've never understood why drunk people are given fire, lol. I've had sparks in my hair and had sparks burn though my clothes. Part of the fun.

    • @AndrewBentonElevationFilms
      @AndrewBentonElevationFilms 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, that is very interesting! I definitely enjoy seeing what other people do as well & I'm sure I will continue to learn some more interesting ways to work around the exit as time goes on. Thank You for taking the time to share your experience!

    HELP A FELLOW FILMMAKER OUT!
    I have a question for you that I really need help with.
    I have the sony a7iii and sony a7sii(24-70mm, 16-35mm, 28mm f2, 55mm 1.8, 28mm f2). I like the a7iii more due to all the awesome updates(battery, 4k no dim, color science, auto focus, etc.) I am a Freelance filmmaker and a Real Estate photographer...and I like FF for bokeh portraits, etc. But my problem with sony is the very poor stabilization while going handheld, and even on a motorized gimbal it is not always very smooth and has slight micro jitters etc.
    ...I am heavily thinking about selling my A7sii, 28mm f2, and small hd focus, and getting a GH5 and a 12-35mm lens. This way I can use my Gh5 for more of my freelance filmmaking that does not need low light or bokeh performance. And then I can have better handheld footy with the other great capabilities of the GH5.
    What do you all think? Let me know of your advice. cuz as of now I don't see too much of a need for my a7sii now that I have the a7iii. So my thought process is that the gh5 would serve as a completely different choice of camera for different jobs.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I find that the a7sii is quite smooth with its image stabilization. The gh5 stabilization is better, but not enough for me to want to switch.
      That said, I would first rent the gh5 and see how you like it.

    • @trimotionmedia5487
      @trimotionmedia5487 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've already extensively used the GH5 and loved the ease of use, and crazy stabilization(You actually walk around handheld and get useable footage with out the jitter bounce like the sony gets). But Sony fits better bc I do extensive real estate photography and like having bokeh for portraits and video interviews. I'm just debating on if it's a good idea to have a sony a7iii and a bunch of sony lenses and MAYBE get a GH5 with one lenses(probably the 12-35mm f2.8.
      Now on how to sell the a7sii and get a good price

    • @jojoannapapazoglou
      @jojoannapapazoglou 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well if you get the gh5 with the ultra metabones 0.71 and sigma 18-35mm you will actually be really ok with f1.2 it can give you in low light situations. And the stabilization will be ok with the sigma aswell

    So, how does one, who has not shot a wedding get their 1st gig? Because since it's a 1 shot deal, no do-overs, most couples don't want to take the chance..... even at a discounted/free rate.... I'm a former Broadcaster with an interest to shoot, but no wedding portfolio.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I would reach out to family members/friends and see if they or anyone they know is getting married. Odds are that there's someone that will vouch for you to film the wedding day. That's how I got my first gig. :)

    • @jimiOvideo
      @jimiOvideo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Matt -Your knowledge is very eye-opening. You have it all down. not wanting to take your time, I do have 1 question. In getting started and until I can afford equipment like you use, What would be the Bare Essentials I could get by with at the start? Obviously, I wouldn't be tackling a huge event at the start. But, I'd imagine 3 recorders & mics for Bride/Groom/Officiator...what else is a necessity? I'd be shooting with a Sony PXW X70, equipped w/Direction Shotgun mic as well, for back-up ...... (I've done video editing for years, so not an issue, and a former broadcaster, so audio is inherient with me). Do you use a Slate...TimeCodes, didn't see that addressed?
