  • Did you know that some pallets are not good for your health? Beware of toxic pallet wood! Watch this video to quickly learn how to identify the stamps on pallets to determine if it is safe to use for crafting.
Before you grab that free pallet by the dumpster, you need to know which ones are safe. Questions I often get are...
    Are pallets safe to burn?
Can you get methyl bromide poisoning from pallets?
How do I identify methyl bromide pallets?
What is the ippc pallet stamp?
What's the difference between heat treated pallets vs non heat treated?
If you are a crafter you need to know how to treat pallet wood for indoor use. Know the codes and be safe! You can get more information here:
Here's a great Web page on the topic of pallet safety: www.1001pallet...

This again. The methyl bromide is very volatile, by the time the pallets have been sitting about a year or two there will be no methyl bromide left. The last ones to be treated in the States was made 11 years ago. Not a problem.

Hey folks, this topic is near to my work and I happen to have a lot of info on it. While MB does signify that the pallet was treated with Methyl Bromide fumigant, MB fumigation is conducted under very specific temperatures and pressures to ensure the death of the target wood-boring insects. Also, MB is gaseous, not liquid, at normal (and elevated) air temperatures. Its pumped in from tanks that hold it in liquid form under extreme pressure. However, once it hits the air, it turns into a gas. It is not a liquid that people soak the pallets in or spray on them. After a fumigation is concluded, the gas is vented out of the chamber and recaptured. It does not stay in the wood. If you really wanted to, you could avoid these pallets out of an EXTREME abundance of caution, but its silly because you definitely eat food that was treated with MB (why do you think grape bags have holes in them), and handle goods treated with MB (probably those new granite counter tops were treated with MB for snail hitchhikers from Italy). MB is very deadly, in gas form, which you will never be exposed to unless you are conducting the fumigation and violate every single safety precaution there is.
You can absolutely use those pallets, or don't... more for me.

I just started getting into making pallet wood planters for sale and had no idea about this. Such good information. I would feel terrible selling a toxic veggie planter or breathing this stuff in

Nothing bad about methyl bromide as it is a gas and off gasses when exposed to air! Becomes safe as if Never used!!!

Oh man sanding some large crate wood from south america ( wood crates that held stone counter tops) nearly sent me to the ER .
The wood was beautiful,, but i started having breathing problems and my inner arms broke out in the most painful itch blistering rash. Took me about 2 weeks to get my half way normal breathing back and 3 weeks to recover from the rash.
    Never Again.

    Incorrect.
A few years back I watched two guys disassemble pallets to later assemble as new pallets.
At the time I was unaware of what the stamps meant, DB (among other chemical being used, but not as notorious) included.
These guys were throwing the parts that were stamped away.
Their explanation to a naive me, at the time, was that some countries, for political reasons, would not allow pallets from specific countries to be imported.
They were removing incriminating evidence, basically, so they could sell reassembled pallets without alerting anyone to the dangers.
This was in the UK (EUR) and, upon finding out the truth, have never seen any reason to trust unmarked pallets without conducting my own enquiries.
    Just sayin'...
That apart though, a very informative video!

I have three that are unmarked so I guess they’re untreated but safe. If I’m going to be using for gardening boxes outside would it make sense to paint over with leftover paint?

Thanks for this video. What if the pallet has NO stamps on it to indicate its treatments? What do you assume in that case?

    • @rxonmymind8362
      @rxonmymind8362 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

She said in the video it's used for national pallets within the country of origin. So it would be safe.
