In this video we present about the significance of betel leaves. In our daily life, most of us use betel leaves directly or indirectly. Mainly this is very essential in hindu religion for all the rituals like poojas and hona, havana etc. Then it also used in jyothishya called tamboola prashna. Obviously most people eat them as a pan by combining it with areca nuts and lime. During olden days our ancestors were eating this betel nuts regularly. They say intake of betel leaves helps in getting better digestive system, prevent bad breath, to get strong teeths etc. Many people keep a habit of eating betel nuts after the meals believing that this makes meal complete. Finally we also use these leaves as a medicinal herb. everything explained in this video. Last but not least we also use these leaves in kitchen, in making several dishes like rasam, vadas etc.

Such a fountain of information our senior citizens are.....it's our loss that the joint family system is collapsing, there's so much to learn from them. In fact, all the tips before chewing the leaves that were shared here were what our grand parents, aunts and uncles had told us too. It was great to see the elders and youngsters sharing such rapport 👌

Our family elders, not "our senior citizens" which term distances our own people. And nothing is collapsing. When individual families take decisions, the story pans out accordingly. Look at this family, Bhat and Bhat ☺️ they manage to draw in even the wider community

The leaf is also used to perfume thuppa when it is freshly made, for the home. Just before taking the thuppa off the fire one or two leaves are dropped into it. The leaves instantly turn fragrant and crisp. They are removed immediately and given to whoever is hanging around waiting for the treat. What this ritual does is perfume the ghee. As a child I have seen this done by all the elder ladies in our family

And we used to sit next to her with chapati.....and she used to give leaf too

Since then I've found so much more to enjoy here. Right now I wish I could show you my great grandfather's kit for betel leaf and lime, his adike kathari. He was born in the late 1800s, and he may even have inherited a couple of the components ☺️ the container for lime however, is identical to the one at the start of your video
