I have wiped out on a lot of huge waves but training really helped in these situations, plus rescuers and the vest helped a lot also but your survival depends on how long you can hold your breath and how you can calm yourself to not waste oxygen.
While I have never wiped out on a wave that big; a few core concepts: pull your limbs in (the force of the water wants to pull you apart, relax (anxiety uses oxygen and because the wave collapsing traps air, the bubbles have to pop before you can swim- don't try breathing it!) wait until you know which way is up before you start swimming (you don't want to go any deeper).
I have wiped out in big waves and no it doesnt want to pull your limbs apart. It only wants to push you down. Its actually a soft experience, the most dangerous part is hitting the bottom, getting your ears blownout from being pushed deep down or not holding your breath long enough and drowning.
Alright, they chose the wrong person to explain what getting pounded by a big wave feels like. Many surfers wear the "floaty" wetsuit. You use it when a wave pushes you too deep down and you dont feel confident you'll make it out to the surface. I'm assuming she just used hers to showcase it in the video (bc she didnt seem too deep down in the video). Its like a parachute, but underwater for emergency.
Underwater after wiping out from a big wave looks so peaceful. I thought it would be way worst with surfers getting sucked down and flipped around. Doesnt look to bad
its cuz its like a 3 to 4 foot wave the tallest I've ever surfed was around 10 feet and I gotthewind knocked out of me but ngl flipping around like cloths in a washing machine is fun
Honesty I also feel like being pounded is fun too like u get thrown around and if u stay calm it’s relaxing of course I don’t mean 50 foot waves I mean like a 10 foot wipe out but still seems kinda fun
When you tumble in a wave with your arms above your head, don't even try to reach for that safety float cord. Instead of dislocate, you'll relocate your shoulders to your hips.
Getting hit by a small wave alone feels uncomfortable. You get salt in your eyes/nose, getting thrown around like a rag doll hitting tons of sea life, and trying to swim back for air is not even half
The suits they wear have CO2 canisters with rip cords so they can get pushed up to the surface after getting held under by a big wave crashing in top of you. The last part was her pulling them and launching to the surface. Some surfers have drowned without them.
Did she pull a ripcord to inflate a lifevest? Do you have to swim upwards after the wave have pushed you several metres under water or do you pop up quickly again wihout having to do anything?
I also wiped out with a wave of 20 feet In this way I was tossed around in the whirlpool. At that time do not panic and taste time like a washing machine and then on the surface of the water Wait for it to float naturally. 1992 Time of typhoon swell.
I wonder if they were filming her surf and she just happened to get sucked into the wave or if they asked her to purposely swim into a wave from underneath.
