You're my hero! Dealership told me 5 years ago they'd have to remove entire dash and it would cost 100's plus take 1/2 day. I've been living with it since that was excessive. Today I bought 2 bulbs at 4.00 each and spent less than 5 minutes popping them in. Serious good Karma coming your way! Thanks!!!

My dealer said the same. Obviously they didn't really check what it would take to replace these bulbs. Pathetic but typical.

    Again, thanks

Thanks for this video. I had been driving around for months with a dark control panel, too lazy/cheap to get it fixed, and no idea
how complicated it would be. With this video I got it done for $14 (two bulbs from Toyota dealer), took less than 30 minutes (plus 1 hour round trip to Toyota dealer for the bulbs).

Thanks so much for taking the time to make and post this video. I'll be changing my bulbs soon. I bought the bulbs and then (can you believe it?) misplaced them somewhere. They are pricey, but it's a pain having a dark panel so I'll buy them again and then when I find the others, I'll have a spare set :)

Thanks so much! Just completed this repair on my 2009 4Runner (the two little bulbs, not the dial bulbs)- went exactly as shown without a single hitch. Pulling the panel off was a little scary, it's definitely tightly mounted, but off it came (and on it went back.) Having the light(s) back is great on its own, but saving the money with the DIY is AWESOME feeling! Sooo satisfying! Thank you again!!

I actually had a service rep at a Toyota dealer tell me that they would have to take the entire dashboard off to replace the bulb behind the fan speed controller (2004 4Runner). I've gone for years without that bulb working; I'm embarrassed that I didn't research this more. Now I can buy a bulb and replace it in 10 minutes. Gotta love those dealership service people... Thank you!

I'm old and a cheapskate. My poor wife has had to drive with me for thousands of miles because I refused to pay Toyota dealer $100 to replace a $10 bulb. So this video and one just seen before by another good hearted citizen deserves commendations and gratitude. It reminds me of the enduring spirit of Americans during EU WWII where most farm kids then fighting could fix a tank or Jeep or weld. The hierarchical order of the professional Nazi forces actually contributed to them losing a terrible war--they could not fix much. As we look at technology and its debilitating complexity preventing self repair, this video counters giving over to helplessness. Read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Repair. Thanks

Perfect video. I would also add: Do not use an undersized screwdriver, the bulbs take a little oomph to get in and my first attempt half-stripped the plastic . Also, video shows well the amount of force to get the display unit out. It also took a bit more oomph than I figured and would not have tried as hard if I hadn't seen the vid.

On my 2004 4Runner sport the left and middle temperature control switches only have lights on the button you pressed instead of all of them. So I can only see the light after I’ve pressed the button. I’m wondering if the is how it’s suppose to be or if there’s something broken. The right temperature control has lights on it at all times unlike the middle and left.

Heya. I have a 2006 Toyota 4runner with 275k miles on the chassis and frame, and 171k on the engine, transmission, and drivetrain (2007 parts). My engine has the check engine light, VSC Off, VSC TRAC, and traction control light lit up like a Christmas tree on my dash. Also, at very low speeds and at low throttle, this sound from exhaust (I don't know if my cats are shot) is like a high-pitched rattling sound, NOT like a rock bouncing around on youtube videos you'd look up online about shot cats. My O2 sensors are all new and have been replaced WITH spacers on them. I took my car to the local automotive shop, they said to fix this they would need to mess with the exhaust, put new O2 sensors on and take the spacers off, then diagnose from there to see what's wrong. It's going to be expensive from them... I also am wanting to do this myself... I have a mechanic friend that told me that my cats need to be replaced but I'm not so sure it's the problem just yet... Any suggestions?

Can you change the color? Does using a different bulb make it not that amber color? Or is it just a filter and so ti's always amber?

Awesome to hear. We still have our 1997 Toyota 4runner and don’t plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. Great vehicles.

Is the display supposed to stay on after the car is off? I’m trying to figure out if it’s draining power because when the car is off the orange light stays on and it displays the time.

Thank you for this helpful video! Do the little pictures on the knobs also light up? I just get the little arrows. The lcd screen has been out on my car for years and just now fixed it thanks to your video.

I have the same question! When it’s dark, I only have the arrows and I can’t see anything else. It’s frustrating.

Our local mechanic would not touch this. After looking at your video, I understood how to remove and replace the bulbs.
The video was concise and made me a hero here with my wife. Thanks for covering everything, beginning to end. It was exactly what I needed to know. I pulled out the bulb. The next stop is the dealer.
    Good Job...... Hell, Great Job!!!

Have you ever seen a situation where just the "Up Temp" and "Down" buttons lights are out? the "Auto" and "A/C" light work fine. Any ideas or am I stuck with either lights that don't work or buying a new cluster from the stealership?

Great video, helped a lot! Question: does the rear window button to the left of the reset/mode buttons on the display - is there a light behind it? I just bought an 08 and noticed the button is dark at night. Thanks!

There should be, yes. Also the ring around the key should be illuminated! And don't forget to check out the often burnt-out cupholder light.
