I was one of the thousands upon thousands of young Ethiopians who were at the Airport when Abebe Bkela ,returned home from Rome. We went on foot about five miles from the Airport to the Place, accompanying him. It was the happiest day for the young Ethiopians.
The Ethiopian hero who opened the new chapter by winning first Olympic Gold for Africa twice. He also breaks the Olympic Record!!! Amazingly, he also run on foot with out shoes! Hats off Abebe Bikila!!
Several years ago I met Wami Beratu at a picnic. Nobody noticed him. I introduced him to the crowd and he was was warmly welcomed. He is over 100 years old. A humble & graceful Ethiopian legend!
It looks like from life history that he was not only the warrior in the ground of sports but in the tragedies and battles of life as well. He is not only the best player of the nation but looks like the national hero. Man of great honour and great dignity. Such are not born without the exaggerate love of fade for the nation.
A phenomenal athlete and an even greater human being. The likes of Abebe Bikila are not found in any walk of life anywhere in this increasingly corrupt and venal world where character and integrity are sacrificed at the altar of wealth and profit

He would go on to be considered as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time, but it was only through a stroke of fortune that Abebe Bikila even featured at Rome 1960. He was not originally selected for the Ethiopian team, and was only added at the last minute after Wami Biratu was injured while playing in a football match though Tamirat Tola was in 2024 Paris Olympics. They both added to National team at the last time and also set Olympic record. ከበቀደሙ የታምራት ቶላ ሸፍጥ ጋር አይመሳሰልም?
As legend and great as he was he was not given a much more prominent location for his memorial. A major airport in the capital or a huge stadium currently under construction should be named after him.His current memorial is in the backyard. It should be moved to the front because he was always up front. I hope the authorities would consider this .
I like the story told by a New Zealand marathon runner about the 1960 race. The runners were gather for the start ( it didn't start in the stadium ) when the New Zealander saw this emaciated looking African athlete peeing by the side of the road. "Well" said the New Zealander to himself, " at least I'll beat that chap". But, to be fair, up until 1960, black Africans hadn't won any long distances races of note.
This are our African heroes we should be teaching kids in Africa
I agree with you and not teaching how to exploit public wealth
His story was included in our English textbook in secondary school in Nigeria

In light of the East African domination in long distance running the last 50 or so years it feels peculiar to think that it had a start in time.
