Well Jess you were correct in saying that hardened ADV riders would think nothing of the roads you were on but as one of those old ADV riders that grew up riding in the mountains I have not forgotten what it felt like starting out. You did a great job. I want to let you know that some of us old guys get a little emotional writing these comments and I am not ashamed to say so. Watching some one learn to ride like you have been brings on tears of joy. I am going to encourage you to rent or barrow a small dual sport bike and take it off road. You will be shocked at how much fun it is to ride a less than 250 cc bike of road. Keep on keeping on and don't look back.

Awsome, you did it so well! 👍🏻 I want to share with you a tip I got doing a track racing training years ago. As we did the first day of theoretical stuff, everybody went around talking about how difficult this was going to be, ending up with a preprogrammed mind. The first laps was a disaster with wrong lines, wrong apexes, wrong braking points and the list goes on. When we discussed with the instructors how difficult it was, one of them said the following: I want you all to change out the word “difficult” in your minds with the word “different”. Yes, it is different. You do things differently from what you know from before. It’s not difficult, it is different. That has since then helped me a lot in all kinds of situations. 😊🏍

Incredible! Handling those giant / heavy machines off road! Lightweight 125 - 250 c.c. motorsickles would have been massively easier. You need to be young and fit to even consider doing that. At 71 years I would have been in pain for a full three weeks afterwards, and I ride nothing but very big bikes!

You may have been out of your element. You may have a lot of sore muscles. You may have been lucky not to fall a couple times. Offroading is dicey. But you are about as good as a beginner gets. Really. You made it through with yourself and your bike unharmed, leaving thousands of rocks unhit, dozens of cliffs uncollided with, un-jumped off. You did not do any of the dumb things that get people hurt.
That is far from mediocre. That is enough for you to explore Nowhere to your heart's content. Even if you have to go slow and rest a lot, you can still see all the things. The door is already open. The more often you go there, the better your speed and endurance will get.
You have a real talent for operating your machine. You also have high standards, calling it a crash just cause you ran over a bush. You have the perfect attitude to never stop getting better. That's class.
There are two elements to comfortable bad-road and off-road riding.
Reading the terrain: You need to get good at sizing up your traction, and what the road contour will do to your bike when you hit it. This can only come with experience. You need to develop taste in lines, always picking the least risky- a good habit when you are alone in the sticks. You need to develop taste in speed- there is an ideal speed for every bike on every line at every moment, and sometimes speed is critical. You need enough momentum to carry you up rises too steep for traction to work. You need to go slow enough that the contour of the road won't throw you off your bike, and you can follow the next bend.
Operating the bike: There is an ideal posture (your body, your attention, your gearing, all the controls, tire pressure, everything) for every riding situation. Once again, it comes with experience. Off road, finding a more ideal posture is often the difference between making it easily, and crashing. A couple basics.
Off road, a quick confidence boost (because it will make the bike less squirrelly) is to cut tire pressure by about 20-25% versus the factory recommended for road. As long as you are not colliding at speed with sharp-edged rocks, this will help a lot.
As soon as things get squirrelly, shift down. You want enough revs that you can break the rear wheel loose, or at least lighten the front wheel, at any moment. In sand, the most secure way to steer is to tilt the bike while standing, and gas it. The rear wheel will walk out a little, and steer you in the direction of the lean. Revs are required for this! If your front wheel slips in a turn, you can often reset it by briefly gunning the motor, unweighting the front wheel and sliding the rear to keep up with the washout so you don't tip over. If you are Jay Springsteen, you can do this around every turn. If you are Jess, it earns you another shot when you throttle down and try to find traction again. Once again, revs required. Any time traction is insecure, go down a gear. In super-dicey situations, you may even have to creep and ride the clutch for a bit.
Notice that what bike you are riding is not on the list. There are better or worse bikes, but all bikes could do what you just did, with a skilled rider and decent suspension. I have done a lot of roads like those on my 1997 Kawasaki Concours, a 600lb. sport-tourer. I feel like the king of the road on pavement, and pavement is how you get to the remote mountain trails, so I ride what I brung. I'm sure Shadetree has some stories too.
In the worst stuff, like deep sand, I am in first gear the whole time, running at 4-6000RPM cause that's where my road engine makes its most controllable power. Screaming along, waving at the ATV's. I had to maintain a decent forward speed or the bike would become unstable. On a set of uphill hairpin turns paved with golf-ball sized round gravel, I never had the traction to get up to the speed where I could let out the clutch for more than a few seconds, before there was another hairpin. Very uncomfortable. I had to stop occasionally to study a bad patch, and choose a line that wouldn't bust my coolant overflow tank, low and in front on the chassis. There were potholes the size of big deer, that appeared too suddenly to avoid. Sweetie and I had to both stand up so the suspension wouldn't bottom too hard. Oh yes, that trip was two-up, through Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, between Page, AZ and Bryce Canyon, UT. 450lb. riders and gear, 80lb. luggage. Far from ideal. But if you want a story you can tell forever, go there.
If you really want to enjoy off road adventure the most, the lighter the bike and the longer the suspension, the better. Suddenly the range of speeds and gears and lines that will work for you just opens right up, and everything gets more easy and fun if you ride something like a Suzuki DRz400. That's when you get to enjoy the scenery.

Great job. You did really well. It took me a few weekends to be comfortable riding in the Florida sugar sand.. The Pan American is a nice bike. But if you are planning to do more Adventure rides. You need to try the BMW GS/

Way to go Jess, you did good girl. and I'm telling you, off road riding WILL make you a better and more confident rider.

Congratulations, Jess, on something I wouldn't do even when I was a young man. This is what Jordan was trying to get you into. BTW, if you're not injured and the motorcycle is still rideable then you haven't crashed. You may have dropped the bike, you may have high-sided it, but you haven't (and didn't) crashed it. Good job! Ride on girl, you've got many miles to go.

@Her Two Wheels, Jess, the way you feel a top of an ADV Bike, is how I felt when getting off my GS and hopped on a 1000 lbs Harley 😂 You are off to a great start, just remember..let your Hips and arms loose, throw the bike around with the pegs and knees while looking at your desire way...the bike will go there. remember..on anADV bike, you are always in gear ( the lower possible one ) to avoid low speed drops or rolling backwards like the rider did 18:39 😱

Great job Jess. Just think of the possibilities for camp sites on an adv bike. Now you understand when a adv rider says. I rode 80 miles today and I’m wore out. You can relate. Proud of you girl. Wayne National Forest here you come.

That is the cool thing about the world of ADV. You do not have to be an expert at big rock single track to still have fun. I started on gravel at 15 years old on a friend's Yami 500 Enduro. My first bike was a standard. Then the next several were all heavy cruisers. And by heavy, I mean an 850 pound V-twin. That one I took up a mountain on heavily washboarded gravel. That was a true adventure. I am looking forward to getting some more road and gravel time next summer.

yep! Wash boards at speed. On a bike that size, your ride is quite impressive. Not to take away from you at all but the bike DOES look very capable. Congrats for hanging on and not only riding that section but RECORDING it too. What a kid!

Yo DIRTGIRL, I am Proud of you. Stepping out of your comfort zone especially on Dirt is Real. I learned to ride Motorsickles on dirt then the progression to Motocross. Head up weight the pegs always keep it loose. One less creosote bush in the 🌎 will not hurt the environment. 🤣 You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda Valkyrie. Keep the Shiny Side Up.

Jess it's all about seat time. The more time you spend on that bike the more you will relax. Be in the moment.
