Short Rider vs Harley-Davidson Pan America Special!

  • Hey all, I'm back with another test ride! As a short rider, the Pan America Special was a unique opportunity to ride a tall bike due to its "adaptive ride height" technology! I've ridden tall bikes before - namely the Indian FTR Rally - so I was eager to see how the Pan America felt! I was also eager to get a taste of the Revolution Max - it didn't disappoint! Check out my ride and let me know what you think!
    Oh, and you'll have to excuse my sloppy cornering in this video. I frequently found myself heading into the corners too fast, having to jam on the brakes or make mid-corner adjustments. I guess that's what happens on a bike you've never ridden before when you get to ride on a fast/twisty road without a chaperone!
    Until next Friday, stay safe out there!

      Thanks! There’s a never-ending supply of great local rides, road trips, and test rides to film! And if I ever get tired of that I can always pull a shadetree and do the local restaurant thing! 😂

    I love watching your videos as we are close in height. Made me giggle watching the kickstand haha.
    Your videos are great as you are open to all types/makes of bikes.
    Man if I was on that test ride and I started given it like I guarantee that the would be a COP sitting past the kill or behind a building/bush and would get me haha.
    You should take the Ultra Limited for a rip and record it ;)
    Keep it up.

      You should find my IG post for this one - I added a special pic that I didn’t think was YT friendly/related to the bike’s height!
      And a big thanks - I really appreciate the support! I have to say of all the test ride opportunities I’ve had so far, Harley did it the best on that Pan-America demo tour! Amazing road/track mapped out, and I love not having to play follow the leader. And it’s just a great bike all around too! Maybe I’m just too green where motorcycles are concerned, but I just can’t imagine allowing myself to get pigeon-hold into one brand or type of bike. They’re all so much fun, my biggest challenge is wanting all of them! Unfortunately, that’s the last test ride for a while - but keep watching! Next week is like a video talking about my heated boot liners and contact lenses. 😂🤦‍♂️

      @@DMVSoloRider I just looked at the IG post haha. I am a motorcycle Enthusiast like you. I do not see my self a Indian only or HD only. To be honest, I was looking at the LRS and the BMW R 1250GS Low before I bought my Chieftain.
      Now the wife has showen interest in wanting to ride with me when I take long trips so now we are looking at going to a Ultra Limited as HD is actually willing to maybe play a little nicer on trade in then Indian locally to me anyways. But who knows. Nothing is final just looking and talking to a dealer right now. My Indian dealer flat out told me that I am going to loose a lot on trade in so better off building it up
      I may end up keeping the Chieftain and putting a tour pack on it and building it out to a RoadMaster even though it will cost me more in the long run. Will be my only option if I do not get what I want for trade in value.
      Looking forward to the next video as I still have 4 feet of snow and -45F here so I have nothing better to do then watch YT videos of people riding ;)

      @@SaskRiderMoto And I’m upset that we’ve had 15” of snow here over the past 2 weeks! 🤦‍♂️ Have you checked out selling privately? The used market is still crazy - you might be able to make a profit on your Indian, even if you need to work out something with shipping! No K1600 Grand America?! lol

      Thanks man. I dig it - definitely not for everyone. But that engine is a winner for sure! Looking forward to riding the Sportster S, and if those bikes sell well you have to wonder if we might see the reemergence of the Bronx! More importantly, what’s Indian going to do now that the liquid cooled battle has been joined! 🤷‍♂️

    After riding Ultra Limited for a few years I really warmed to the PAS on the test drive I did, so much so that I traded the Ultra in for the Pan American Special. I guess I might be an inch or more taller than you so I did need the ARH, I did buy a reach seat but honestly, it really didn't help much. I can get one foot flat on the ground or both feet with enough contact to move the bike around while sitting on it and the ARH lowered. Once you get accustomed to the bike it really is awesome as long as you don't try to compare it to a cruiser or touring bike.
    A word on ARH - no question it's unique and a feather in H-D's cap for those of us that aren't over 6', but I like the ARH set in Auto with Short Delay so I have every confidence the bike is a low as it can be when I stop quickly, here's the catch; you can't customize the preset Ride Modes, which means you have to use a Custom mode to configure ARH.
    This may not be of concern to others, but it bugs me that I cannot customize the preset Ride Modes.

      Interesting. I definitely didn’t get into that level of detail in fiddling around, or in my video, so great insight! I can only imagine you loving every mile - it’s a great bike and amazing engine. It may not be a cruiser, you you can cruise forever! 👍

    The real problem for short riders besides seat height is the weight of the bike that makes it difficult to maneuver unless you have a solid grip on the ground

    Well done video, thank you, I'm 5'10, a bit over that and I hope I'm tall enough for this bike, I was listening but possibly I missed you saying your height. I have a cruiser but but I'm torn whether to buy the Pan American or go to the opposite end and get the Sportster S, I know they're vastly different bikes but I love the new water cooled Revolution Max 1250 engine and it's on both. Thanks for the fun video, new subscriber, ride safe brother, peace! I live in Washington State, are you on one of the San Juan islands?

    • @DMVSoloRider

      Welcome aboard! I’m in Washington, DC - other side of the country. 🤣 At 5’10” you’ll have no problem with the Pan-Am. I’m 5’6”, so standing upright I can just get both feet on the ground with the dynamic suspension at its lowest setting. As for the two bikes, if you love long cruises I can’t imagine picking the Sportster over the Pan America. Far more comfortable, loads of power. The power delivery is perhaps just a bit different than what you may be used to on a traditional cruiser - PA still has tons of torque, but revs higher than a typical cruiser. It’s been a bit since I rode the sportster, but I recall the engine being tuned a bit different so you got a bit more low end grunt. Still also revs high - that bike is far more like my FTR than a cruiser. 👍

    Hi there! I'm a short female rider and still looking for a bike that matches my height and taste. I'm 155cm (so around 5 feet) So it's been really difficult to find something besides a cruiser. With my current bike i'm only able to reach the ground with one foot, so this doesn't give me the best amount of confidence when riding on difficult routes. Do you think the lower version of this bike will be doable for me? :) Thanks!

    • @DMVSoloRider
      @DMVSoloRider  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately, the adaptive suspension on the Pan-Am only lowers the bike by an inch or two. At 5’5” I could only get both feet on the ground when standing up, and it was a close call even then. I suspect at 5’, one footing bikes is the way it’s going to have to be for you. On the bright side, if you get comfortable doing it, then all the bikes are yours! ✌️

      5’6” and my boots have a 1” sole. My inseam is 28”, so short legs! I’m actually standing in the thumbnail with my left foot on the ground, and my right foot on the peg. I could only get both tippy toes on the ground sitting on the bike.

    • @DMVSoloRider

      Most people who ride ADV bikes never take them off road. They ride them because they have comfortable, upright riding positions and good power, and they’re good touring bikes. In that sense, it’s totally appropriate and meaningful to compare the Pan America to a bagger. 🤷‍♂️ As for it being a “high reving engine,” yes it is. I thought it was interesting/valuable to see how the engine/bike felt when you aren’t reving it out to 6000 RPMs all the time - does the engine lug? Does it take a bit to get up to speed? I think those are normal types of inquiries I see on review videos all the time. 🤷‍♂️

  • @johnspencer2931

    You trashed the suspension and never left a paved road, not much of a review for an adventure bike. 😢

    • @DMVSoloRider
      @DMVSoloRider  ปีที่แล้ว

      Trashed the suspension? I don’t really think that’s accurate. Regardless, I rode an adventure bike the way most adv riders ride them…on the street! 🤣
